McCain will be the next U.S. President (IMO)
Re: McCain will be the next U.S. President (IMO)
One thing Nosy's paranoia ignores is the number of people who were born in their respective countries that the Soviets were able to convert/subvert during the cold war. Being born in a country doesn't mean you will never betray it. I would argue that in some cases if a person moves to a country it might inspire them to higher loyalty than some native born citizens, precisely because it was a situation of choice and acceptance rather than just the accident of birth.

Being a Regan wannabe isn't a bad, thing, keep in mind the current crowd in office are definitely not "Reganistas" (or whatever they used to call them.), or even remotely like it. The Cheneys and Rumsfelds were tools you used, but you didn't put them in charge of anything. Bush I had the same view for that matter.Fairweather Pure wrote:McCain is a great example of how you don't have to be a right wing Regan wannabe in order to secure your party's nomination.
McCain is getting the nod because they have no one else electable.

I saw the media talking about how doomed his campaign was from the start. Then people started voting for him and other candidates started to drop out!

You see what you want to see and I'll see what I want to see. McCain doesn't inspire any one at all. No one. Not enough people will go out and vote republican in november. The only chance he has is if people vote for him just to fight against hillary or obama. Exactly what the media wants. They wanted to make sure the Republicans had a ho-hum candidate. They suceeded.Boogahz wrote:Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:McCain is getting the nod because the media pushed him on to us.

I wouldnt go so far as to say McCain is ho-hum. He has that whole "I got shot down in teh 'nam" thing that people idolize, I among them. His senate voting record on the other hand...
But his complete lack of media attention at present may hurt him big, as the hillery vs. Obama thing gets all the attention.
Ask any moron on the street, chances are they thing it's hillery vs obama for president. McCain not even beeing known.

Re: McCain will be the next U.S. President (IMO)
McCain is the only Republican candidate I would have considered this election of the top three or four that participated in the primaries. The others would have guaranteed even Hillary a win if they were nominated.
Now McCain will be going up against some hag that has no real experience except for being associated with Bill Clinton or Obama who will lose due to doubts about his ability to not be a pussy in foreign affairs. Obama inspires hope in his speeches but not much confidence that he's ready to deal with international affairs. Obama would make a great member of someone's cabinet.(not Hillary's)
I don't see Obama fading away anytime soon.
Al Gore should have run this year.

Same is true for anyone else... The media has really taken their charge of 'reporting the news' and decided to drive it instead.
What ever happened to fair coverage? equal time? How can 3 candidates get 90% of the airtime?
I'm not too sweet on McCain, but other than Paul, he'd probably have been my Republican pick anyways... Romney and Huckabee weren't charming me any, though I appreciated Romneys business experience and self-funding.

McCain is pretty much popular with everyone in GOP-land but the religious right. One would think that someone who is different enough to be exactly what we needed from a GOP candidate would be more popular, but then I guess we were wrong.
Oh wait....whats that you say? He decimated everyone else in the primaries? I guess that gives him absolutely no shot against 2 people that have the Democrats split down the middle with each side fiercely agasint the other. Good times.

Well, even if McCain wins the election, America can be proud that its not going to be led by the most monstrous group of first world corporate shill fuckwit warmongerers of the last 30 years anymore. Small comfort given how much damage has been done to the place but comfort nonetheless.
Still, here's hoping Obama wins.

This thread may get a little quiet with McCain wrapping up the nomination so early.
McCain was at the Suns game on Saturday and got the second most applause next to Muhammad Ali (the black superman). That's pretty good! You're never going to get more applause than Ali at a sporting even (Joe Louis was in the crowd and got huge applause though when I saw the Ali vs Larry Holmes fight in person. He died days later : (

Re: McCain will be the next U.S. President (IMO)
I'm glad McCain won because he has no chance running against either of the Democrats. It's now ours to lose..
I do however think that McCain would make a great commander in chief. Unfortunately, he isn't much of an invigorating or hopeful person. "We're gonna be there for 100 years! All of the jobs are gone, never coming back! The economy is fucked! There's no hope!" Smart guy, just a bit past his prime, politically speaking.

Re: McCain will be the next U.S. President (IMO)
I disagree. I think McCain would beat Hillary, but has a chance to lose to Obama. If Hillary manages to steal the nomination, do you think all the Obama supporters will suddenly jump on the Hillary bandwagon after all the months of vitriol between the two camps? I don't.
That's why a lot of Republicans were out voting for Hillary (per Zamtuk). I myself voted for Obama (AKA against Hillary), while I will vote for McCain in the Fall. I'd rather position the best "second choice" than position someone like Hillary (gak!) for the highest office if McCain doesn't win.

So can any of you explain why you think voting for someone who will fight in Iraq, even if it takes 100 more years, is worth it? I'm actually interested. It's pretty nonsensical.

Re: McCain will be the next U.S. President (IMO)
Nick, that actually was a very difficult question with huge ramifications for Senator McCain. If he simply wanted to pander to the religious right he would have simply said "No" to any question of government funding. It's obvious he wanted to waffle and avoid alienating any group so he did his best to evade the question. I don't think he deserves the "idiocy" attribute although he should pay an average Democrat to train him how to do a better job of skirting tough questions without actually appearing to do that exact thing.Nick wrote:http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007 ... revention/

I see both a social and fiscal issue lumped together. Why is it wrong that he wants to research the issue before giving a response? This clearly isn't a black and white issue as many people would view it.
Re: McCain will be the next U.S. President (IMO)
How does he not know enough about this issue? Someone who has voted for spending on this issue has no excuse not to give a straight answer. This isn't a fiscal issue because McCain is certainly not going to cut spending on public health in Africa. Bush's huge aid package to Africa is undercut by his requirement of abstinence only education.

Ugh... Silly superstition is one step from ignorant religion.Don't try to pass a salt shaker to John McCain. He won't take it from your hand because it's bad luck.
The Arizona senator also won't throw a hat on a bed — it means death will soon visit the household — but he regularly carries 31 cents in lucky change in his pocket.
Now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has converted his staff to his famously superstitious ways. Whenever anyone says something optimistic — especially about this fall's general election — a slew of staffers join him in knocking on wood.
"That's an ugly habit I've picked up myself," Brooke Buchanan, the senator's national press secretary, said with a laugh. "We were in Kansas City ... and someone mentioned winning in November, and three of us knocked on wood. We don't want to jinx anything. We're all very superstitious people."
Top adviser Mark Salter also has been influenced.
"I grew a beard in 2000 and didn't shave until the campaign was over, and I did it this time, too. That's my little superstition. I probably won't shave it until November," he said, adding that he's not sure if Mr. McCain "considers it lucky, or if he considers it an eyesore."
Mr. McCain has dozens of superstitions and rituals, many stemming from his days as a Navy fighter pilot, a notoriously superstitious bunch. He carries a lucky feather, a lucky compass and a lucky penny — not to mention a lucky nickel and a lucky quarter.
"He had so many of them that we had to cut down. It was like a change purse in his pocket," Miss Buchanan said, laughing.
