Red Alert 3

Post by Fairweather Pure »

Fantastic game. If you liked the recent C&C Tiberium Wars game and it's expansion, I think you'll love Red Alert 3 even more. It's more cartoonish, but a blast to play. The water effects are off the hook. Hell, the entire game is like staring into a huge bowl of visual candy. It's bright, shiney, and beautiful. The neon graphics are really fun to watch even when you're losing.

Gameplay is more of the same. Yes, I mean that as a compliment. As studios advance RTS games into the next generation, these old school games are always welcome to people lke me. It doesn't get more old school than Red Alert 3. I think there is room for both types in the gaming market. The advances that EQ did choose to make are subtle, yet satisfying. Every unit now has a secondary ability. This ability is usually an effect of some sort, like powering down an enemy unit or even transforming from an ariel unit to an aquatic one, with lots of variations on that theme. This makes tier 1 units viable in the later tiers of the game. RA3 also has a point system similar to Generals that let's you spend points throughout the game on abilites for your side. These abilites are not as powerful as they were in previous games, so dropping a nuke isn't going to be auto-win anymore :P I haven't played a whole lot yet, so I'm uncetian about balance and what-not. This is just an "out of the box review". I can tell already that water is going to play a pretty heavy role in the game. It's pretty cool that once your aquatic units are destoryed, they sink and remain visiable underwater. The water effects are pretty much the best I have ever seen in an RTS. An added bonus was that this runs perfect on my older gaming rig with all effects on their highest settings.

If you like RTS games, I don't see how you wouldn't enjoy this game.

Looks like fun if you're into RTS games.

It doesn't take itself seriously and as Fair mentioned, the colors are bright.

Wish you could zoom out a little more on both the main screen and also the mini map.

The COOP part looks like fun. I'd rather play with someone than against! (since I suck at RTS games)

The cut scenes are pretty funny.

I like the cracked splash page:

Finished all 3 campaigns... awesome, awesome game but far easier than previous ones (yep, I played them all). It ended too soon :)

I'm not sure how a RTS would play on a console... let us know.

The game is super cheesy and really quite fun.
I must-buy for fans of the franchise.

Yeah, you're not kidding. I do remember playing and beating C&C on the PS1 and I don't remember having any issues. However, I have Warhammer: Battle March for the 360 and it's so awkward and unweildly that it makes the game pretty much impossible to enjoy. I had heard that EA tried a new control scheme for this game for the 360, so I figured I would give it a shot. I only played 5-6 missions from my hacked PC version but I played quite a few skirmishes. If this plays well, I may pick up the other 2 C&C games for the 360 if I see them cheap enough.
