War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
Dwight Eisenhower

I was more saying that Warcraft was pretty much a ripoff of Dune 2 (not that I cared).miir wrote:Dune was a Westwood game and therefore the precursor to Command and Conquer.noel wrote:Dune 2 which was the precursor to Warcraft 2 which was the precursor to the greatest RTS ever:
Starcraft.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Rome: Total War.
Finally getting powerful enough to use Spartan Hoplites / Urban Cohorts / Armored War Elephants, or WHATEVER your favorite troop is... is so FUCKING worth the wait that all you people that chose Starcraft can BURN IN ROMAN HELL!!!
But since I think R:TW isn't officially an RTS, I choose:
Starcraft.

Dune 2 started it all for me, BUT the best RTS would be Starcraft.
StarCraft still is playable and that says OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS! So many diff strategies you could implement with the friends.
A modern day RTS i must also mention is Dawn of War, that revolutionized it for me and breathed new life in the genre.
But the nomination goes to
StarCraft.

True, I guess the question was more of a "should this category just be Strategy" and include Civ. Is it that much different from your *craft games, other than there being more pauses in action. I'll give it an hour or so, see if I hear any compelling arguments one way or the other.

That's kind of the impression I got from the other people who mentioned Civ. It had nearly as many noms in the monolithic thread as any other game for Best Game Ever.
Sorry for the delay on the last few polls, I'll get them up today. And I'll probably just convert RTS to S and include Civ.
