Good news
In other news, Charlie Jones will be sleeping in his box again this Christmas, and no one gives a shit.
I hate Sunday morning christians, and I don't particularly find this kind of story heartwarming.
It's a bit like the "family of five" that have a nice home, a decent income, and no fire insurance. Then the community kicks in and helps out because two, that's two, fully grown adults, were too negligent to take simple precautions to secure their children. Why would you bother getting insurance? And why would the community let a couple with no kids sleep in their car?
People are sheep.

You are the most cynical waste of breath I have had the displeasure of reading. What is this about Sunday morning Christians? Rather a world full of people who step up to the plate periodically than the General state of the world where most people step up to get a better view of the tragedy.Zaelath wrote:In other news, Charlie Jones will be sleeping in his box again this Christmas, and no one gives a shit.

Shaddap you asshat.
Times "Person of the Year" is not a fucking award, it is about the person who created, caused, the most news or was the most influential.
All of those covers were good picks.
Historically, Some were assholes others were great humanitarians

Strike a nerve? If someone is negligent, doesn't keep their car (brakes) in good repair, and rear ends you at a stop light, do you get out and offer to pay for their damage?Atokal wrote:You are the most cynical waste of breath I have had the displeasure of reading. If occasional bursts of charity makes you feel good, ok. But as long as you realise you're doing it for yourself and not from some greater altruistic nature.

Yeah you did strike a nerve. It seems to me after reading the article that they were not negligent, they were down on their luck. Not knowing all the details of why he is unemployed or why they are behind on utility payments I would say it was a stroke of bad luck to knock over that candle.Zaelath wrote:Strike a nerve? Further, to not have any empathy towards your fellow man when circumstances like this arise is inconceivable. Then to slam those who stepped up to help and call them Sunday morning Christians is simply retarded.
Please point out to me anything in the article that shows these were two stupid people. Poor = Stupid? Trying to keep warm = Stupid?
Knocking the Candle over by mistake = Stupid?
Finally what is wrong with doing a charitable act and feeling good about it?
Perhaps in your world feeling good about helping your fellow man is a motive to be frowned upon. In my world I could care less about that motive because it should in fact make you feel good.
Editted to respond to Kelshara:
Hey man you do realize that for centuries people burned candles while they slept right?
These people had no electricity and contrary to what you probably think flashlights do not cast off heat.
Merry Christmas

Exactly how much heat do you think a candle puts out?Atokal wrote: Yeah you did strike a nerve. It seems to me after reading the article that they were not negligent, they were down on their luck. Hey, I have sympathy for them (I don't think I can empathise without burning down my house) but I don't see what makes them so special compared to all the other homeless in the region.Further, to not have any empathy towards your fellow man when circumstances like this arise is inconceivable. I don't recall calling them stupid, and in fact I didn't even call them negligent it reminded me of a more common situation where there is some gross negligence involved. Please point out to me anything in the article that shows these were two stupid people. You really are an illiterate fucking twat aren't you? Where did I say it was "wrong", I just suggested that you understand your own motivation. There's a big difference between someone truely altruistic (say Mother Theresa) and your self-righteous ass. Finally what is wrong with doing a charitable act and feeling good about it?

Actually candles were not used often during sleep. Most of the time they had a fireplace and covered the embers so it could be brought back to life in the morning. Oil lamps, candles etc were usually blown out when people went to bed.
Not to mention: A candle gives off very little heat. They would have to spend an extraordinary amount of money on candles for it to have any effect. That money could have been spent on buying a blanket instead which would have been a hell of a lot more effective.
No to mention: Yes only an idiot would leave a candle burning close to where they sleep. Same idiots most likely smoked in bed as well.
We have a cabin back home which is old-style. That means, it requires wood for heating etc. If it is cold there is absolutely nothing a candle can do to keep ANY heat there. It simply doesn't work.

I'm sorry, but that's just fucking stupid. Pretty sure people know how the process works these days. Actually even dogs know how the process works. Let's give the populace some credit eh?Hesten wrote:Kelshara wrote:I have to agree with that.. wtf is up with all the people who have kids without the means to support/raise them? Stupid idiots!
