Re: Pirates
The gun was not the cause of death. It was the carelessness and stupidity of a parent that caused that death. Would you show you kid how to change a saw blade and plug it in first? If you were teaching them how to wire a socket, would you not check to ensure the breaker was off before you cut into the wiring? It is the whole personal responsibility thing that I talk about all the time. There are literally millions of guns in the US right now...and millions of guns in homes that contain children. Accidental firearm deaths are at their lowest point in history. Part of that is because the firearm industry has taken great steps to make the actual weapons safer from accidental discharge, but they cannot prevent stupidity.
There are safety measures people need to take every single day of their life and this is especially important at home and with your children. I don't blame the firearm any more than I blame the anti-freeze that some irresponsible parent left out for their child to drink. Children die because parents are stupid.

Fairweather Pure wrote:My line of thinking was more along the lines that if there was not a gun in the house, the kid wouldn't have gotten shot in the head. I just cannot understand the mentality of anyone that would have a gun in the same home as their child.
In the instance you describe, I don't have much sympathy for the father because he chose to have that gun there and clearly didn't check everything 100% while handling a potentially deadly item. I'm pretty much too terrified of having a gun in the home because it might go off due to negligence on my part or somebody else in my home.
I'm not really for guns, but I'm not entirely against them. I see why some people want them in their homes for protection, I just don't choose to.
My home security is my dog (who isn't really a fierce, guard dog, but will bark when she hears people come in and/or odd noises) and a few maglite flashlights around the house I'd smash over people's heads. I might not have the ranged protection if an intruder does have a gun themselves, but I guess that's the risk I take.

Re: Pirates
Firearm accidents are 100% preventable with proper education and awareness. If you are parent, it is also your responsibility (as a firearm owner) to purchase and USE a gun safe as well as trigger locks.
Guns are not going away anytime soon in the US. Why not educate? Even rudimentary levels of education such as Kilmoll pointed out can make a world of difference. Fear and lack of diligence are far more deadly.

Oh yes, I'm totally convinced that having guns lying around where small children can "pick them up and play with them" isn't at all a problem if they've been shown proper respect for guns. Perhaps you could give them a flesh wound to really drive the point home.
Or, perhaps, you could not leave that shit lying around.
You fuckheads are the exact same lot that try to tell people that warning a girl that a cock can get her pregant will stop it happening, if it wasn't so sad it would be hillarious.
We had guns in the house as a kid, in a gun safe, and guess what, I found keys to the guns, gunpowder, you name it.
We had porn in the house as a kid, I got into that too.
We had no drugs in the house as a kid, surprisingly, I didn't accidentally overdose on something I didn't have any access to.
Funny how that works.

Well, I guess we the fuckheads should just ignore the fact that guns in the US are a reality and just hope that our children don't ever see one.
Hey, it would be great if there were more stringent firearm controls, but they do not exist. We are not discussing perfect world scenarios, we are discussing the current state of the world we live in and ways to mitigate accidents.

Re: Pirates
I think there needs to be some serious restrictions on the buying, selling and owning firearms. Licensing should require proof of safety training, basic proficiency and safe storage capablity. Transfer of firearms should be allowed only via third party dealers so that licensing and registration restrictions can be accommodated. Ammunition sales should should be controlled and limited in quantity and to calibers for which a licensee is registered. You can say that you don't agree until illegal guns are controled, but that's a real "chicken & egg" argument. Most illegal guns flow from legal sources. We will never be able to get a handle on illegal guns until we can control the legal ones with basic, common sense restrictions.
I'm all for addressing illegal weapons by confiscating unlicensed weapons, fining unregistered gun owners or imprisoning criminals in possession of or who use guns in the commision of a crime, but a couple of things must go hand-in-hand with addressing the scourge of criminals with guns that the extreme gun zealots are so worried about. First, we must address the social and economic inequities that are the root cause for this country's high crime rates. When the lack of better options breeds the hopelessness that push young people into criminal lifestyles are sufficiently addressed, the "thugs with guns" you worry about so much won't be a big issue. Secondly, we must reform our prison system so that we're not just warehousing criminals. Reform should be the objective, even if it's not achievable in 100% of the prison population. Prison should be 70% reform and 30% punishment. Rehabilitation should focus on teaching life skills and trades so that when inmates are released, they're not just better, harder criminals. While in prison, compulsory labor and training should be standard for everyone, and any inmate's release should be contingent upon completion of job training and life skills education. Policies would have to be adopted to ensure that rehabilitated criminals would be able to actually get jobs, so that they're not left with the choice of not eating or falling back into criminal activities. For those that cannot be rehabilitated, lock them up forever and force them to work.
Of course it's not just as simple as this, but the gun nuts on the right always point to out of control crime as justification for being well armed. Well, that and the imagined need to overthrow the country with the most powerful military on the planet. The crime problem is a big issue with vast, interconnected contributors that have to be addressed with broad policy changes, which the same right-wingers generally oppose. I guess it's just easier to shoot the criminals than to address the underlying problem of why there are criminals, right?
Edit to add: And just to be clear, I don't hate guns or gun enthusiasts, and I don't want to take guns away from everyone. I've owned several hand guns and long guns in my life. I've never gotten into hunting, although I've been hunting several times. I really enjoyed shooting as a hobby. I was never a gun nut, but I really enjoyed shooting, was pretty good and went to the range as much as I could afford to at the time. I had a concealed carry permit, although I rarely carried a pistol on my person. I kept my weapons locked in a gun locker, and was meticulous about safety. My dad taught me how to shoot when I was young, and drilled safety into my head above everything else. I sold all of my guns years ago (only to people that I knew personally), except for one antique .22 pump action that belonged to my great-grandfather when he was a boy. I kept it for sentimental reasons only. I don't keep it around here because I no longer have proper storage for it, so it stays at my dad's house in his locked gun cabinet. I understand people owning and enjoying firearms. I understand the desire to hunt, although I don't get into that myself, and I understand the desire to have a firearm for personal protection, even though I don't agree with it in most cases.
For home defense, I have several aluminum bats available around the house. I'm not some pussy liberal. I'm that guy that used to enjoy fighting. I've never backed down from a fight and have delivered several ass beatings in my life (I've taken a few, too). I can lay my nose down flat against my face because the cartilage is shot in it. I might be a little older and in a little worse shape physically now than I used to be, but I can take care of myself pretty well.

Re: Pirates
You cannot institute a licensing or registration of firearms. It will not ever be something that happens in the US without a very real threat of civil unrest or possibly civil war. Call me a redneck or whatever, but that would push large segment of the country over the edge and would be a violation of the Constitution (which as we all know matters not to Obama and his administration anyway seeing as how they already have thrown it out the window). Federal gun lists would be one step from an outright ban and would allow the government to have a list of where to go once they had a ban in place. Every member of a political body that would do this would be ousted immediately in the next election (and we have already seen some of the Dems in Congress that want to keep their jobs sign a letter to Obama and his jackbooted thug Holder that they will not vote for any of his gun control bills).Xatrei wrote:I think there needs to be some serious restrictions on the buying, selling and owning firearms. We can dwell in the dream world, but in reality there is no fix that works. Just ignoring the fact that there are evil, evil people in the world will not make them cease to exist. What people like me want is for people like you to stay out of our business so we can defend ourself and our families. You are entirely free to continue ignoring what goes on around you, yet you always seem to want to put limits on everyone. Should there be saftey training mandated? Certainly there should be...and it should start in the schools as was mentioned earlier. It won't ever happen though, because the liberal twats will always raise 10 kinds of hell at the mere mention of a firearm.

Re: Pirates
I don't believe that licensing and registration, properly implemented, violates the constitution. We already impose limitations on firearms, and I think we would be able to extend some additional controls without violating the 2nd amendment except in the most broad and irrational interpretations of it (in which case we're already violating it). I will, however, agree that at this time it's not a politically popular thing to consider, and is at this juncture impractical. I do think that this is the direction we should be heading, though, even if it takes us decades to get there. The exaggerated threat of roving armed criminals violating your home is a straw man popular with those eager to bolster their argument with a statistically small, but scary threat . Frankly, I care more about the social and criminal justice reforms I mentioned before than the gun legislation. I think that if you address the root cause of our crime problem - social and economic inequity, a failed drug policy, and criminal justice reform - the problem of guns in the hands of criminals becomes a an even tinier issue. Yes there are some broken people out there (you call them evil) that can't be fixed, but they're the minority and we can't build our policy around the exception. We have to address the other stuff, and then handle the exceptions as they need to be.
BTW, care to tell us what specifically the Obama administration has done to violate the constitution already? I'm really curious to know what you think it is they've done.

Ummm... You must not know that Obama, a constitutional scholar, questioned the legality of that tax. The House of Representatives, in a fit of populist rage and with the support of about half of the house REPUBLICANS, passed a bill that would have taxed AIG retention bonuses at 90%, but when "Constitution-Raping Obama / Satan & Hitler's love child" questioned its constitutionality and indicated that it would not be signed, the senate pretty much backed away from the measure and it's gone nowhere. You do know that the congress and the Obama administration are different entities, right?

Re: Pirates
Couple random thoughts...
- how come all the threads are turning into gun control arguments? This one was about those Somali pirates...
- since some are talking about the US Constitution with regards to the gun control issue, I think a lot of people lose sight (conveniently?) that the US Constitution was meant to be a living document, capable of being changed as the values of its society changed, otherwise why would there be an ammending process? And why is it people want to make gay marriage (something that doesn't hurt anyone) unconstitutional but are scared of imposing limits of something that in the wrong hands can be very dangerous?
-gun safety education: I disagree that it should be in schools. Its the choice of an individual to own a firearm and the onus should be on them to ensure it is used and stored safely. That means the owner knowing what the fuck he/she is doing when they buy it (and the vendor being responsible for making sure of that) and keeping it away/teaching proper handling to their kids. Owning a gun is a lifestyle choice: why should anyone but the owner pay for it? If it is in schools it should be an elective and the costs associated should go to the family of the kids enrolled in it (and we did have "hunter training" as a jr high optional course which dealt with woodscraft, bush survival and firearms safety in the sticks where I grew up).
- back to the pirates, I thought the situation was well handled by the Obama administration, for all that fuckheads like Lou Dobbs on CNN were bemoaning the fact that Obama was making the US look weak with his response: where's the weakness in 3 of 4 hostage takers dead and the last in custody? Just because they were measured and deliberate (as opposed to rushing in more aggressively, possibly getting their hostage killed) doesn't mean that the US comes off as weak in this.
-will other nations join in the pirate hunt now? We had reports in the Canadian media that one of our frigates patrolling off Somalia (as part of a joint op) scared off some pirates from attacking a civilian ship last week. How much effort will the Europeans put into this, especially since most targeted vessels and hostages are supposedly from EU member states?
- Is anyone else shaking their heads at the threats the pirates are making after the Maersk Alabama, that "the rules had changed" and they were going to kill hostages? As if that wasn't a danger already when armed men were seizing and capturing these ships and crews. Now I'm not saying every pirate necessarily deserves to die but they are breaking laws millenia old so what did they expect? Its not like getting a job as a mechanic or bank teller...

Re: Pirates
It's amusing to me that the pirates have responded to our actions like we did something wrong and they have some right to retaliate. How dare we interfere with them! This absurdity is only matched by Kim Jong Ill declaring that anyone shooting down his missile he fired over active airspace would be an act of war. People like this need to die, their time on Earth has come and gone.
When these situations arise, no one should be waiting for Obama or for anyone other than their immediate commanding officer to take the shot, and the second they have one they should take it. There is a risk of the hostages being killed regardless of our course of action, and I'd say by the Somalian's reaction, that risk has just increased considerably either way.
Not saying that anyone here has implied this, but I can't imagine why we would want to negotiate or even discuss issues with a lawless country that's thriving off of piracy.

By golly he sure did stand up for that Constitution!President Obama did not completely endorse the House bill, but said he backed the sentiment behind the legislation.
“Today's vote rightly reflects the outrage that so many feel over the lavish bonuses that AIG provided its employees at the expense of the taxpayers who have kept this failed company afloat,” Obama said in a statement. “Now this legislation moves to the Senate, and I look forward to receiving a final product that will serve as a strong signal to the executives who run these firms that such compensation will not be tolerated.”

Re: Pirates
Back on topic, I think that there was an earnest effort to convince the pirates of the hopelessness of their situation in the hope that they'd resolve this peacefully and without harm to anyone. Ultimately, that's the most certain way to ensure that the captain wouldn't be harmed. There wasn't any negotiating in the "we'll give you this in exchange for that" sense. While that talking was going on, however, the assets necessary to pull off the rescue were being moved into place, and everyone from the top of the chain of command to the guys that pulled the trigger, was ready to do what was necessary to give Captain Phillips the best shot at surviving this ordeal. Obama authorized it and monitored the situation as he should have, but didn't micromanage the tactical situation. I'd say that's a pretty positive sign of how he'll react to more serious situations that arise.

...and back off topic.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:By golly he sure did stand up for that Constitution!
Keep googling. You'll find that his administration sent some fairly strong signals, including questioning the constitutionality of the specific AIG Bonus Tax, which has resulted in the Senate crafting legislation, yet to be delivered I believe, without AIG bonus taxes. You said he/his administration created AIG Bonus Taxes. That's not true. Try again.
Now, with regard to his comments that you quoted, they were accurate. The vote did reflect a very justifiable outrage that people felt about AIG executives getting bonuses of any kind during this situation. It moved on to the Senate where it could be refined and fixed. He's still waiting on a final product that penalizes AIG bonus recipients. He'll still be waiting when his term ends in 7.8 years. In the broader context of what he's said on the subject, it's pretty clear that he doesn't support punative, after-the-fact taxation of the AIG executives, but does favor crafting legislation that will limit the compensation, whether direct salary, bonuses or other compensation tools, of executives at companies receiving government bailout assistance.
I'm still trying to find the part of this where he's chucked the Constitution out of the window.

ok, my 2 cents on both topics
I think they should just straight out attack the pirates if they see them on the ocean, but not chase them on land. Put those good ol navy guns to work and blow the hell outta those pontoon boats! If they do start killing the hostages, then they wont have anyone to bargain. And sometimes, you need to break a few eggs to make an omelet.
Secondly, i totally agree with Xatrei about the gun control idea. Guns need to be more stringently controlled, the idea that there is going to be total chaos and a dissolution of government where people are rioting in the streets and burning city's and you need your gun to protect you and your family, is fucking stupid and you should be taken out behind the wood shed if you believe this. I also hope all of the extremist right-wing "i need my guns" crazies are one day a victim of gun violence/accident. (mean i know but i dont care). Also I don't care how well you hide your guns, where u hide the keys, how you lock the trigger, the kid is gonna get it to work, they are uncanny at these things and someones going to get hurt.
Peoples outlandish ideas that having more gun control will lead to the end of the world need a reality check. We have a black president and we are still here, the ground didn't split open and demons come out and kill us all. Get with it people, stop living in a fantasy world where your gun is the only security you have from the end of the world.

No ones advocating letting them lie around or having kids play with them. What the fuck are you talking about?
Pretty hard for kids to "pick them up and play with them" if you don't leave them lying around. Try to keep up with the conversation.Kilmoll wrote:There are whole different levels of how to not fuck with them. I would think the largest issue is the kids do not understand how the guns work and yet they want to pick them up and play with them. The largest part in gun safety is making sure they understand how to safely unload a gun and make 100% certain that it has no round in it. The next part (and the hardest even for adults) is instilling the basic rules of guns.....which means keeping it in a safe direction at all times and making sure their finger is not on the trigger. Teaching them to shoot one is not really a goal of learning firearm safety.

This has to be the most laughable statement you have ever made. For 8 years, you have seen one of the most inspiring documents in the history of civilization be raped and pillaged at every turn, and this is the time that you decide to make a stand?
Clearly even you cannot be this deluded. Are you taking playbook advice from Winnow, now?

It's a far cry from how he handled the AIG bonuses: big media conference which did very little. He could have pulled the rug out from under AIG but instead tried the anger approach, even though he knew the law was on AIG's side. His thorough handling of the pirate situation is definitely a plus in light of that.Xatrei wrote:I'd say that's a pretty positive sign of how he'll react to more serious situations that arise.

Re: Pirates
Yeah, it's amusing how everyone is trying to make it sound like Obama took the high road on the AIG thing but no one went along with him.
It is very clear that all parties involved in signing this (democrat and republican) knew that if they signed the bill, AIG and the other big companies would love them, but the public would be outraged. They then knew that they could make us think that they meant to limit the big wigs at these companies and claim that they are going to do something about it (which I'm sure they never will) which would calm many of those people down, and Obama ends up looking like a knight in shining armor (lol).
I could be wrong but this seems all too convenient to me, I have a hard time believing this wasn't planned all along.

wHAT ARE MORE GUN CONTROL LAWS GOING TO ACCOMPLISH? HAHAHHA CAPS LOCK
Sorry, too lazy to hit backspace to fix, deal with it.
Anywayz, we have plenty of laws on the books now that prevent a HUGE section of the population from owning any. Yet, they still run around the "hood" blowin each other to fuk. So what new laws do you require us civil types to follow that they will just continue to ignore? And what would it accomplish?
Outlaw guns, so that only outlaws have them please.

Seeing how I have seen more deaths from people who claim god told them to do it. I will disagree with you on everything you have and will say. I'm for limits on guns, but I also agree that it is our right to have them. As for limits, people fucked in the head, people who are well stupid shouldn't have them.
If a person is going to kill people, they will kill them no matter what. You can make bomb out of random shit. You can run people over in a car. You can stab people with a knife, or if need be a fucking fork. If a kid gets killed at home, because the parents didn't lock the gun that is required by law tough shit. Maybe if you weren't stupid enough to have something that can kill people laying around unlocked your kid might be alive. The simple fact these parents guard their cars up better than guns, should tell you something.
Better yet, get rid of all the fucking emos, kids with "social problems", nut cases and in your case Drasta, Hispanics. Then we will all be safe.
And if you really want to feel my bitterness. All these fucking right wing pieces of shit who are bitching about what Obama is doing. Welcome to the fucking minority now. We lived in your shit for the past 8 years, here is hoping you live in our shit for the next 7. Thump all you want about rights being taken away, after allowing a fucking war to take place that that was unmoral, or many numerous violations of our basic rights under the Constitution. I sure in the fuck didn't see you in Iraq. But I sure in the fuck see you sitting behind your fucking computer calling those of us who wanted CHANGE from a near tyrant and then calling us traitors or un Americans, or on the news with signs protesting a black president who is trying to get us back on a path that we stumbled off of years ago yelling WE NEED TO SECEDE!!! Fuck you pussies. A fucking liberal, did something you right wing pussies wouldn't do. Defend your country. Suck on them teabags.
By the way. I'm down for killing Pirates. I would love to sign up and be security on a ship. I would have boiling oil, electric rails, huge ass flame throwers as soon as they are in range. They would have to resort to putting cannons on their skivvies to hijack my ship!

Re: Pirates
Well... I mean. It still amazes me that anyone with a brain can truly think that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" or such a variation thereof. Much easier to disarm (or run away from) someone with a knife than someone with a semi-automatic gun. Also incredible that people say that it's impossible to license and/or restrict firearm, when outside of the US (in Europe for instance) they are regulated, and as a result you have way fewer crimes involving firearms. Call me a dirty European, but for me only cops should have guns.
I mean... Before I came over to the US to study for one year, I had never even seen a live gun (or seen a chalk silhouette drawn to signal a murder victim), and I had lived in a fairly large city for a long time. The first week I come over, I saw both.
I agree the crime statistics depend on other things apart gun availability. But it just seems like common sense getting rid of guns in the hands of civilians would be the logical first step. All that talk of people being armed at all times really makes me nervous. Men are emotional creatures... but if they don't have a weapon at hand, the worst you risk is a punch. If they instead carry a gun and get into an argument, you might get shot instead. Especially when you look at statistics, and see that guns in households are used much more frequently to hurt members of the household that owns the gun, instead than fending off criminals. I don't know - I guess I just don't get it.
As for pirates - killing them won't fix the issue. Fixing the anarchy in the country will (I am not in any way suggesting it's up to the US and Co. to fork over the money for this, btw). The pirates don't give a shit about the US navy, if only because you'd realistically need a hell of a lot more ships to patrol such a large swath of sea. And it's not like they can do anything else eh!

Re: Pirates
So you have to have a gun to kill someone? Maybe you should do some research before you spout rhetoric. http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvinco.htmlEstrosiath Durothil wrote:Well... I mean. The U.S. has a high gun murder rate, whereas a country like England with strict gun controls has almost no gun murders and a very low murder rate. Doesn't this show that gun control is effective in reducing murder rates? Not exactly. Prior to having any gun controls, England already had a homicide rate much lower than the United States
ORLY? So gosh....maybe it is the culture of the people that dictates who is going to have murderous thugs running loose? Such a shock to me.Gun control opponents can play similar games. The Swiss with 7 million people have hundreds of thousands of fully-automatic rifles in their homes (see GunCite's "Swiss Gun Laws") and the Israelis, until recently, have had easy access to guns (brief summary of Israeli firearms regulations here). Both countries have low homicide rates. Likewise this doesn't mean more guns less crime
The U.S. has a higher non-gun murder rate than many European country's total murder rates. On the other hand, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Mexico have non-gun murder rates in excess of our total murder rate.
Well sure it is logical to people who believe mainstream media and the movies. Why don't you tell me how you propose to remove those guns? How about you start with removing the guns from all the felons that have them first and show us how well that works? But it just seems like common sense getting rid of guns in the hands of civilians would be the logical first step. All that talk of people being armed at all times really makes me nervous.
This is just the most absurd thing I have ever seen printed. Do you know how many people in the US are carryign concealed now? If a CCW holder kills someone in a fight, it is front page national headlines. It is EXTREMELY rare. The statistics on crime by people who get concealed carry permits is along the lines of a non-license holder being 17 times more likely to commit a crime than a licensee.Men are emotional creatures... but if they don't have a weapon at hand, the worst you risk is a punch. If they instead carry a gun and get into an argument, you might get shot instead.
Yet another completely unbased load of shit that is spouted out by mainstream media. The only reason this statistic shows that it hurts hosuehold members more is because they lump suicides in with it. If suicides are removed, it is a MUCH greater chance of the firearm being used against an intruder than on a hosuehold member. Before you say guns cause suicides, let me say that Japan has a much higher suicide rate than we do and no guns to use to do it. They are also much higher first time success rate.Especially when you look at statistics, and see that guns in households are used much more frequently to hurt members of the household that owns the gun, instead than fending off criminals.
I am pretty sure if you kill a pirate, they can't storm any more boats. As for pirates - killing them won't fix the issue.
