Something fun to discuss

Post by Lalanae »

In your opinion, what mob or pc has the best death animation?

[and a little question for my own enlightenment from you guys who know this crap. Is "mob" synonymous with "npc" or does "npc" denote a character that can be interacted with, as opposed to a creature that cannot and just exists for killing? A minor subtlety I'd like to understand (if it exists).]

NPC and mob are synonymous IMO.

I always got a chuckle from the low-res Iksar death animation :)

mob is short for mobile.
Any mobile creature in a rpg can be considered a mob.
A non mobile creature is usally referred to as a NPC.

Dunno about animations, but the mobs in SSeru say the funiest shit when they die....

Old school ogre/troll death animations are the win ;)

As for MOB/NPC, that's actually a tougher question than I first thought. Initially I wanted to say they were synonymous, but then I started thinking.. I never refer to some quest NPCs as quest MOBs. Hmm. It's all just semantics I guess, but I suppose for me there's a bit of a difference.

I'd have to go with the Sol Kobolds animation. I still remember flinching when they took that final swing at me.

Dunno about animations, but the DE necro npcs on second floor of hate have the best death messages.

i agree with Dregor and Mid.

love the old school ogre deaths. best is when they get DT'd. they just kind of sit down, then fall over.

and i was gonna say kobolds in solb as well.

it's a hard choice between goblins and their fetal position (plumber's crack rofl), ogres (old models, are there really any others? ) and those stone things in echo/Mseru/lavastorm that when dead fall apart in single stones spread out all over

Kobolds, IMO. The first time I saw the last swing after I THOUGHT it was dead, I had to nuke it again, just to make sure.

As for mobs and NPC's. I call creatures that only exist to be killed "MOB's" and creatures that act as quest folks, vendors, bankers, guild trainers "NPC's". I guess if it has a special name, it's an "NPC" (Non-playing character) in my view, but if it's a_shin_knight_003, it's a "MOB".

/agree old model ogres are great.
I also like the Dervishes in IC, first I'm just glad to see them die cos they are annoying as hell, and second I always liked that skull hanging in mid air for a moment before sinking to the ground atop the rest of its bones.

Same, the werewolf/kobold is pretty good too. Old model Ogres always seems surprised when they died :)

Close, but no Kyoukan.

MoB is actually short for movable object. Just an FYI ;)

On topic, I like the nightstalker deaths. The howl is a great touch.

Oh FFS, another know-it-all about mud terminology.

On every MUD I played, MOB was the term used for a 'compuer controlled' mobile.

Besides that point, mobs are not 'moveable'... have you ever tried to manipulate and 'move' a mob in a MUD?

Mobile: Capable of moving or changing from one state or condition to another

Moveable: capable of being moved or conveyed from one place to another
