I'm curious as to how you became such an authority on Putin?
You don't really buy his excuse, do you? I just have a hard time believing anything Russians say..
I don't know enough to automatically believe or discount it. But I think it's foolish not to believe them just because they're Russian.
I have a hard time believing a single word that is spoken by the Russian or Chinese government. A lot of this stems from the type of government they have, they just do so much shady shit that imo it makes the U.S. look like the angels nick paints Europeans to be.

You should respond to this and quote me too, so I can read a comment from nick about how ironic my comment is coming from an American.

I never said otherwise. There is a difference between questioning some or all things and making decisions what to buy into and what not to - And not believing a peep out of someone no matter what.

A noun, a verb and 9/11 POW.

NBC news is confirming it, saying that a senior member of the McCain staff has told them that it will be Sarah Palin.

This smacks of desperation from McCain. He may as well give up now.

There goes McCain's experience and judgement arguments. This makes Dan Quayle look good.

McCain will pass the US male life expectency in his first term. His death would not be unlikely. And his replacement will be a person with 18 months experience in the smallest state, many city mayors have larger portfolios. (I don't count her years on the city council of a town with pop: 5000).

Are they just sacraficing this ticket?

Edit: I'm floored, can't be true.

Her name has been on the media watchlist for months. Didn't you hear that Chet Edwards was destined to be Obama's running mate? I feel that it is best to just wait to see who the candidate announces their running mate.

If they really think they're going to get waves of women, and former Clinton supporters in particular, to vote for McCain simply because he selected a female running mate (who is an ultra-conservative and strongly anti-choice), they've just insulted 18 million people. Further, they yield the experience argument, and they scare the shit out of anyone who is even slightly concerned that cancer-ridden, seemingly senile old John McSame might kick the bucket or otherwise become unable to complete his term. Who wants a right-wing nut-job a heartbeat away from the office?

Not that an extra 150k people make much of a difference, though. Least populated or 4th least populated, the underlying point remains valid.

She did seem a little "golly gee whiz!" though. She'll likely get over that after giving speech after speech for the next 3 months though.

The shock has worn off. I still don't understand the choice. She's pro life, loves guns, has five kids, and possibly has insight into energy? I mean, that's it? Any of our Republican talking heads care to give some insight?

Edit: Thanks X, that's what I meant to say. On paper she's a die hard Republican.

I am shocked and awed. I mean ....wtf?! The old rich white Christian right is not going to vote for a woman and that is who they needed to sucker....errr....pull in with the VP selection. If you really wanted to shake things up and go with a Dem, you could have targetted Strickland or even went with old Joe Lierberman. I would be interested to see the next set of polls on whether I am right or wrong, but my thought is that this kills the election for him. People would be more apt to vote in a black communist male than a white, ultra conservative female from an oil producing state that has ethics investigations ongoing.

With that said, I would hit it.

Wow. Reading a couple of random message boards about this pick will show how badly this is going over. You can't put a woman who is the ideaological opposite of everything Hillary stood for and simply say "Hey, it's a woman! Vote McCain!". The right is calling it outright pandering, and the women on the left are feeling insulted. Looks like a fair number of Republicans were hoping for a Romney, which is also a little surprising to me. I didn't think they liked Mormons?

We may be witnessing an Epic Fail of unprecedented size. Time will tell.

Her wikipedia is bad enough. Maybe McCain thought this was a good economic move.
Matanuska Maid Dairy closure
When the Alaska Creamery Board recommended closing Matanuska Maid Dairy, an unprofitable state-owned business, Palin objected, citing concern for the impact on dairy farmers and the fact that the dairy had just received $600,000 in state money. When Palin realized that the Board of Agriculture and Conservation appoints Creamery Board members, she simply replaced the entire membership of the Board of Agriculture and Conservation. The new board, led by businesswoman Kristan Cole, reversed the decision to close the dairy. The new board approved milk price increases offered by the dairy in an attempt to control fiscal losses, even though milk from Washington was already offered in Alaskan stores at lower prices. In the end, the dairy was forced to close, and the state tried to sell the assets to pay off its debts but received no bids.

Palin not knowing what the VP does. Skip to around 2:50.

It's like shooting fish in a barrell, which also happens to be what you get when you cross Palin's favortie pastime with what her husband does for a living.

I think McCain could have taken Hillary as a running mate and fared better than this.

I'm still laughing. I think this fails the "do no harm" test. Obama has been fighting the inexperience meme for 19 months and it still is a test for him. I don't think she will be able to pass it in two months. The Dayton metro area where this was announced has more people than Alaska.

She would however be a VPILF.

I can't stand it when people like her don't enunciate the G on works like working, nothing and looking... combine that with her accent and it makes her sound even more lowbrow than Bush.

Ok I am going to play the devil's advocate here. I have said before that I am a Republican, The wife is Democrat, this way we both have a say in each primary. I already said that I would not be voting for McCain, and I dislike the Clintons, which makes my favored candidate pretty obvious.

Saying all that, I still don't think this is necessarily a bad choice. First off, I know virtually nothing about her, and I am not going to believe to what the Dems and Republicans are going to trot out in the next few weeks. I did not believe it when they spread shit about Obama, so why would I accept it about her? I prefer to make my decision on her over the course of the next 67 days. (Yes I know it will be a skewed perception, but I can look at her actions and her past)

I know she is against abortion, I don't like that. I personally would not want my wife to have one, but I think it should be a choice and outlawing it means the Government decides for you.

I know she is for traditional marriage, but I understand she was one of the first to allow partners rights, so at least she is somewhat moderate on that one. As above, I am not going to marry a guy, but if you want to go ahead, I could care less.

She seems to be religious, but the above partner thing makes me hope that she is not overzealous. I have no problem is she found God, just don't tell me I have to find him. Make decisions based on commmon sense, not religious, or conservative or liberal paradigms.

I know she loves guns, I don't, but I don't care if someone has one. A reasonable one! So like abortion, let it be ok, and let the individual make the decision. (CRAZY, I KNOW)

The reason I think this may not be a bad choice is simple. I think the Republicans know they are done this election. McCain is safe. He is old, and would only have served one term if he won. They no he won't win, so why not set up a possible future with Palin. In my industry most experts are suggesting continued sluggish sales until late 2009 to early 2010. We will still be in Iraq, or we will have just left by 2012 and feelings will still be raw. In other words, most of the early part of Obama's term will be problematic and once in office, it will be difficult for him to maintain his rock star status. It will also be hard to accomplish all the changes he wants to address.

Republicans might be angling for 2012 or even 2016 and they have a semi-attractive, decent candidate to mold. If this truely is the Republican plan, and she turns out to be moderate leaning, which I hope she does, then this will hopefully mean a large swing away from this radical conservative, religious time in the parties history. The Republicans really have little to lose here, Mitt or Lieberman would just be more of the same, so go for it.

I chose to be the Republican because I believe in the ideals of the Party. Less government intervention and a conservative fiscal outline. I am not sure where that party went, and I absolutely abhor this new "shared wealth" crap he and Hillary are touting. I believe in the Rights of the People and unfortunately neither party agrees with me there. "Shared Prosperity" sounds like I am going to pay moe taxes for people who have not done as well, and fuck that. I worked hard to get to where I am.

So I will vote Obama, hope that Palin represents a change in the Republicans, and hope even more that common sense can rule the world and the U.S. again. If Palin is just another Religious Wackjob...sigh
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon
