Preparing for the Next Spill
Since 1989, several significant improvements have been made in oil spill prevention and response planning.
Escorts and Monitoring
Ten years ago, there was only one escort vessel through Valdez Narrows. Two escort vessels accompany each tanker through the Sound, available to assist in the event of an emergency, such as a loss of power or loss of rudder control. Read about Alyeska Pipeline's Oil Spill Contingency Plan.
The U.S. Coast Guard now monitors fully laden tankers via satellite as they pass through Valdez Narrows, cruise by Bligh Island, and exit Prince William Sound at Hinchinbrook Entrance. In 1989, the Coast Guard watched the tankers only through Valdez Narrows and Valdez Arm. In addition, all tankers in Prince William Sound are required by Congress to be double-hulled by the year 2015.
Pilots
Specially trained marine pilots, with considerable experience in Prince William Sound, board tankers from a pilot station at Bligh Reef and are aboard the ship for 25 miles out of the 70-mile transit through the Sound. Weather criteria for safe navigation are firmly established.
Bigger Cleanup, Better Storage
The ability of skimming systems to remove oil from water is now 10 times greater than it was in 1989, with equipment in place capable of recovering over 300,000 barrels of oil in 72 hours. There are now 40 miles of containment boom in Prince William Sound, seven times the amount available at the time of the Exxon Valdez spill. Dispersants are now stockpiled for use and systems are in place to apply them from helicopters, airplanes, and boats.
Even if oil could have been skimmed in 1989, there was no place to put the oil-water mix. Today, seven barges are available with a capacity to hold 818,000 barrels of recovered oil.
Community Involvement
Community training programs have been established and local fishing fleets have been trained to respond to spill emergencies. Planning for oil spills in the Sound must now include a scenario for a spill of 12.6 million gallons.

I am completely willing to, and have on many occasions had civil discussions with people about a variety things here. Like I said, this only happens if the person is acting and conversing with me in a way I deem acceptable (and I don't ask for much), which I don't recall ever being the case with you.Zaelath wrote:Where as your contribution is being the staunchest ally of the biggest hypocritical troll to ever shit over everything they supposedly hold dear to elicit emotional response? Sorry to dissapoint you again, but I left MN of my own free will. Don't worry, I won't be back
The problem isn't my lack of interest in or lack of ability to discuss things with you or anyone else here in an adult fashion. The problem is that not too unlike nick, you dismiss anyone that disagrees with you as an idiot. The only difference is that you are at least slightly more mature and don't get quite as vile as the little prick previously mentioned.
Also, while I'm thinking of two of my favorite people, you and nick could stand to learn a lesson in who gives a shit about what you think about the U.S. - nobody. No one ever cared or ever will care what he thinks, and everyone stopped caring what you think on the glorious day you left our great country.
And don't fucking wink at me, it makes me think there might be a sliver of a chance you didn't mean what your last sentence says.

I have to say, it's hilarious that anyone really thinks that the situation with oil is going to be any different whether McCain or Obama is in the office. ExxonMcCain indeed.
I would highly suggest paying close attention to who ends up being Obama's VP choice, because he/she is the one you will be truly voting for.. If Obama gets elected, some redneck motherfucker will kill him sooner or later.

Hehe, Funk sure has a hardon for me these days. Lucky I'm not anywhere near the crying little pissant otherwise he may spit on me! (lawwwwl)
As for Midnyte comparing meat eating to one of the biggest natural disasters caused by an oil company in the last century, well..that right there is grounds for a kick in the balls if I ever saw one.
It's actually sad that people like you two exist.
But oh well, fortunately I don't know you personally. That would be fucking lame.

Surprising perhaps given how unpopular of an opinion it is from a political standpoint. However, what he said is pretty much correct. Energy independence is basically another way of saying we should have a protectionist energy trade policy and that is pretty much as economically irrational as any other protectionist trade policy.Forthe wrote:I can't believe he openly argued against energy independence.
Its also pretty unlikely to actually happen anytime in the foreseeable future. Pretty much every president since Nixon has beat on the energy independence drum, claiming it can be achieved, usually about 10 years out. When the forecasted time comes the only thing that has usually changed is the name of the politician spouting the rhetoric.

Re: ExxonMobil CEO Defends High Profits
Wow!
There are some seriously angry people here.
What I fail to understand is why people get so upset over someone elses opinion.
Midnyte simply states that the oil spill doesn't bother him as it does others. I personally am a nature lover myself, and am appaled at the oil spill. I don't agree with Mid's stance that it was an "accident" and that the company has amended for their negligence in this matter. However, I don't get my panties in a bunch either because the man has his own opinions. His opinions are wildly different then mine, however he is entitled to them just as much as I'm entitled to mine.
For the love of God people, chill out with the VV beatdown of Funk/Mid etc. They have wildly different opinions. Their opinions don't make sense to many. The fact that their opinions seem to infuriate people and piss them off is actually pretty comical to me. I mean, you either agree or don't. You can even point out why you disagree. When you start to boil over with angst and rage because you can't seem to change someone's opinions or the way they view the world, maybe you need to step back and think about your self for a bit and put your efforts into making sure your NOT that way. Midnyte is Midnyte... it's obvious he's not going to change, and no amount of name calling or bashing is going to make it change. I laugh at the people that think they can "bash some sense into him". His views are just as valid as yours. Just because they're different and don't make sense doesn't invalidate them.
The sad thing in this thread about gas/energy is that the biggest waste of energy I've seen here is people banging their heads against the keyboard because they can't understand why Midnyte and Funk just won't learn to be more like them.
So as not to derail this thread on my insights, I'll say that if we took half the time and investment to come up with a truly alternative energy source such as solar power, oceanic wave generated power, wind power etc that we easily COULD be self-sustained in our energy needs. Harnessing the weather, elements etc is truly the way to go as it's a never ending, clean source of energy. There is no reason why every home in america couldn't have solar panels on it's roof. Coastal states could be wired into wave generator plants. Great Plains states fed by wind power etc. These technologies are there and they work. They aren't mainstream because we still feel as if we don't "need" them. It's easier to bitch about the cost of gas and skip eating out then it is to try to figure out how we're going to make the switch. The biggest problem I've heard in regards to the hydrogen fuel cell solution is that hydrogen is hard to store and is flammable. Well isn't oil/gas the same damn thing?? I've heard there aren't hydrogen stations readily available for refueling. Well if I recall, their weren't many gas stations 80 years ago either but somehow people managed!
The problem is we're so "comfortable" with oil that we don't want to change. It's going to take running out of oil and having things get real shitty before we actually put forth a concerted effort to make it happen. I like the fact that we're seeing nothing but MPG ratings on car commercials, more energy efficient homes/appliances etc. I think we're in the fledgling stage of starting to realize this MAY become a problem at some point.

Did you even read the thread? I agree with the gist of your point, you just appear to have a massive blind spot in regards to what you're on about. The only person getting into a rage appear to be Funk. As for people being annoyed by Midnyte, well that's probably because he is openly being a contrary asshole who doesn't appear to understand the terms "context" or "relativity".

To a degree you are correct, unfortunately solar power only really pays off for the people who make solar panels. Granted, if we used them on that massive of a scale costs should decrease, but as I said before, solar doesn't pay off. Period.Kryshade wrote:

The Wave generation technology is already stirring up issues with how it affects sea life and environmental groups are not really excited by the prospect, wind farms are tough because they cost a lot, take up a lot of space and no one wants them around their house. Utilities are doing some things for us, states are mandating a certain percentage of power to come from green power sources. More Geothermal power is springing up, but until there is a true push to change, these sources still ultimately end up costing more then they ever generate. I have also stated before that Nuclear is the best solution in regards to Utility payback (which generates their interest in the project), minimal resources utilized (wind and solar take massive amounts of land, Nuclear not so much), and actual generated power. Even if we put solar on every house, they would not generate the power needed in most cities.
We also have an increasingly aging infrastructure that in many towns is close to falling out of the sky. With the housing market dead, utility companies are getting into line maintenance programs, they are able to increase line coordination to deliver power more effectively and they are automating systems. Newer technologies like digital meters and better products are increasing the effectiveness of the delivery of generated power. These things will help as well.
There really is no easy answer to the problem. SCE launched a solar initiative in Ontario, putting solar panels on warehouse rooftops throughout the city. The are expecting to spend as much as they would on a generation plant, but by tapping into the grid directly from the panels, they were able to eliminate transmission towers, right of way issues and hopefully the program will be a success. If it is, the rest of the country will take notice. California and the west coast usually lead these things.
I do find it somewhat humorous to see someone use an electric car and try to act like they are saving the world (Not all owner, just this one specific type of owner). It helps but you need to plug into an outlet and power up. That outlet is using power delivered in most cases by a power generation facility that is using...oil related product to generate the power. I get that they are trying and that is great, but don't brag about how "Green" you really are, just do your part and live your life.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. The defeatist argument is a perfect example supporting Obama's "bitter" remarks. Nobody believes the government will do anything anyway so they vote based on crap like gay marriage. If you don't vote for a mandate to do something then you are responsible, not those you voted for. It is pretty sad when a country like Brazil can do this and the US can not.
