Doomsday - March 14th

Post by Canelek »

Neil Marshall's (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) newest flick. I am really looking forward to this. :D

I just hope Tina Turner doesn't show up. >< It does look great though! Post-apocalyptic ftw!

I love that it's set in Scotland. That means we get to hear great accents the whole time.

Anyone know the budget for this? It at least looks like far and away more $$$ than his other two films, both of which fucking rock. I hope he does not go all Sam Raimi! :D

Ok. There are about a hundred negative things you could say about the movie, but all I'm going to say is that it was a freaking cool movie nonetheless.

The pitch to the execs must have gone something like this: "We're going to take the coolest aspects of about 12 different movies and put them all into 1 movie- how can you go wrong??" I think the only thing it didn't have was zombies.

Too often it seems it is the peaceful and innocent who are slaughtered. In this a lesson may be found that it may not be prudential to be either too peaceful or too innocent. One does not survive with wolves by becoming a sheep.

I'm going to refrain from mentioning them but you're right about the 100 negative things.

I'm a big fan of these kind of movies...Road Warrior, Escape from New York, etc. but didn't care for this one. I turned it off when the guy went into a song and dance routine with go go girls, etc.

I don't mind a movie using ideas from other ones but this had direct rip off elements from Road Warrior, Escape from New York, and Waterworld that make it feel like a university film student's project based on those movies.

The movie fails in the 'interesting characters" department. There aren't any. The main character is nice to look at but unlike Escape, Road Warriors movies, and even Waterworld, the villains and supporting cast don't capture you're interest...gotta have interesting characters to make a good movie imo. Even one like this,

Unlike video games, I won't rate a movie based on watching half of it!

I know you have good taste in books with the Gor series Mak so If you like this movie I suppose others might as well. I'd watch Waterworld twice in a row before watching this though.

Water World Rocked!

so did the Postman!

and Battlefield Earth!

but I think this movie annoys me even without watching it as it just smacks of rip off of Escape from New York (another movie that Rocked!)

The three movies above were, as far as I know, at least original works and didn't rip off from other movies as blatantly as this one apparently does. (I know that Battlefield Earth is from the novel which is an Awesome read and it also ROCKED!)

I love watching bad movies, and generally like them a great deal more than I should, but I have no clue how you can support this claim.

I think it is mainly due to the fact that I really enjoyed the book and understand what a huge undertaking it was to try and create a movie based on it. I understand that they didn't hit the mark on this, or hell even come all the close, but I admire the ambition and the effort and it makes me remember the book all that much more. Also, because so many people absolutly abhore this movie it forces me to like it in spite of all its flaws.

Your post gave me a twitchy eye, Bubba.

As to Doomsday, even though I was super-excited to see it since I loved Marshall's other 2 gems, I still have yet to see it.

I will though, as I think I "get" his style....we shall see.

In the great theme of Beyond Thunderdome, however, I hope there is no tribe of annoying Aussie children living in Lord of the Flies fashion.... "Cap'n Walker, Cap'n Walker!!!11!!11!!".

When you think of the old classics like the Road Warrior series, Escape, and even Waterworld, they all have characters you can remember. Even Waterworld is memorable for the antagonist played by Dennis Hopper. Snake Plisskin, the Duke, Cabbie, Maggie, the Brain. Beyond Thungerdome: Master/Blaster, Auntie Entity...

Doomsday lacks the interesting characters that make movies memorable. (even the bad ones)

I absolutely agree, Winnow. I am hoping there is something in Doomsday that appeals to me, even if there are no memorable characters.

Hell, I even remember that fordlincolnmercury kid from that disaster of a film, The Postman. Still can't believe I watched that! ><

I had watched a notsogreat copy of this months ago and thought it was just OK. I ended up buying it on Blu Ray and watched it over the weekend. I fucking loved it! Marshall knows how to bring on the gore!

McDowell's character was a bit hollow, but the female lead was a straight up badass, and quite sexy to boot. Of course, there was a ton of Mad Max "borrowed" content, but the overall effect was quite brilliant, imo. Sound, direction and cinematography was stunning. Also, Bob Hoskins is brilliant as Bob Hoskins, as usual.

I watched this last night with the wife. I didn't really care for it, not even in a campy way. I felt like I watched a 2 hour car commercial. I can suspend my disbelief in many cases for the sake of film, but this was waaaaay too over the top. So, they built a 30 foot wall all around Scotland in a week? As was said earlier in this thread, there were so many problems that I could go on and on and on, so I won't.

I gave it a 5.5 out of 10. The wife gave it a 5.

After this movie, we watched Angel-A. I'll review that later in it's thread. Suffice it to say, it saved what was up to that point, a bad movie night :P
