lol you can't be serious? Oh wait, you're a dimwit so I guess you are.

I usually go at least 10 over the speed limit. If that's not fast enough for you, when I'm passing someone that's going slow, well that's your problem. If you're actually goign to run into me because I'm not going fast enough you're a total fucktard that shouldn't have the privilege of driving.

If I have to resort to passing on the shoulder , I will. And judging by some of the responses on this thread, I don't doubt this has happened to at least one of you. The point is not the 5 minutes I save myself getting to my destination, the point is I despise putsy, slow people. This goes for driving, walking behind you and wanting to kick you down a flight of stairs in the mall, and wherever else putsy slow people can get in my way and piss me off.

So how do y'all define "tailgating"? Less than one car length? Less than 2?

Staying close enough to the back of my car to not be able to stop should I stop suddenly for more than a minute I consider tailgating. So yeah I guess I'd put it at one car length... When you see the car in back of you it seems like they are half a car length, but they are actually about one car length...

I generally go 5 miles over the speed limit on city streets and 10 miles over the speed limit on freeways. There's zero to no chance of getting pulled over at those speeds.

Unfortunately, most of the time I'm going less than 55 due to traffic. This is were you fuckers that don't know how to merge come into play. You are the assholes that slow everything down because instead of merging when you can, you drive all the way until the fucking lane ends and then cause a traffic jam trying to force your way in.

You wannabe speeders when there's heavy traffic are also a joke. You speed by one car causing undue risk and ultimately save at best 5 seconds because you're jammed in traffic again a few feet later. I love it when a hyperactive speeder makes the wrong decision and gets into a slower lane. No fucking chance he gets back in ahead of me and I'll parallel their ass to pin them in and make sure they're fucked for the next mile.

Less than 2 seconds, in perfect conditions, is too close.

BTW, If you think I'm a slowpoke, or a lane hog, you're just completely wrong. I'm usually the "margin of error" above the speed limit if I'm in a decent car, perhaps at or below it in a beater. But then, I do tend to be courteous; I don't sit in the fast lane if I can move back to the other lane safely and there's someone faster coming behind, I don't tailgate, I don't cut in on people when there's 2 miles of clear road ahead and no urgency to cross back to the slow lane, I'll even pull off the road if I'm driving a shitty truck or something on a one lane road to let cars by me rather than have cowboys attempt to pass blind.

There's a difference at being horrified by the level of ignorance of simple physics shown on the road every day and getting pissed off when people want to blame their poor behaviour on everyone else, and just generally being a twat.

I'm sorry if you feel offended that I think you're stupid for tailgating, for any reason, but I have the weight of scientific evidence to back up that assessment, all you have is irritation that Jerk A won't make way on the road for Jerk B that's in more of a hurry.

Its obvious you guys don't live in NJ. From what I understand, in other states, for the most part, the speed limit is basically what is done on highways. NJ is a different story, in a three lane highway, there is the 65 lane (speed limit, right lane), there is the middle lane (70-75), and there is the left lane (75+). Anyone who disrupts this system causes traffic foremost. But it also causes people who are in the correct lane having to switch lanes to go their desired speed causing accidents.

Usually morons from out of state violate this immediately, which basically happens on weekends when the "bennys" come from New York and Pennslyvania to go to our beaches.

I can't stand when someone is sitting in the fast lane, completely satisfied going 68-70 mph. Its ridiculous considering the flow of traffic puts that lane at something around 75-85.

Some drivers just don't know how to drive on highways. For instance, BREAKING when changing lanes? or breaking with no one in front of them or making quick lane changes in front of a car moving at a faster pace. Simple stuff like this is moronic and causes accidents, and in many cases its caused by a "defensive" driver.

I used to live there. Is that a relatively new system? Last I heard they adopted 65 on the NJ turnpike, and doubled the fine if you should go just a little bit over...

I think he was insinuating it Lohr. There are no rules to the effect of what Riv is saying. In fact, if you're going 70 in any lane on a 65 speed limit road, you can get a speeding ticket and it will be double the charge.

Generally speaking the rule is left to pass so if you're not passing, you shouldn't be out in the leftmost lane.

If someone is tailgating me, I tend to slow down but just a slow non-braking rate. Usually the person backs off which lends me to believe they were just not paying utmost attention to the road and not trying to be a tailgating pain. Once they give me some room to look right (if there's a right lane to move to), I get over. I don't really give a shit. 18 years driving and nearly 400k miles driven and I've never been in a accident, my fault or someone elses. I also have only one ticket back in 1990 because I was following a friend who got into the turn lane before it was a turn lane because of traffic and the cop decided to give us both a ticket (my legitimate defence of getting lost otherwise didn't take hold). That's a pretty good record considering I live in the most congested area of the most congested state.

I also would like to add, it's the frequent aggressive lane changing which causes breaks in traffic flow. That break compounds behind the aggressive driver w/out their ignorant soul even knowing it.

Ahh I see. The unwritten rules of the road. Here it seems like "Whichever lane you want to go whichever speed..."

Most of my major annoyances have already been mentioned but I do have one (somewhat minor) peeve that I don't believe has been mentioned. There's a good chance there's a wreck at some point along the way when I'm driving through Nashville at any given time; when I'm coming up on a wreck I can see ahead of me, I try to get in the appropriate lanes (the ones that are moving beyond the wreck) as soon as possible. While I'm making my 2mph journey towards the wreck, cars will continue to pass in the open lanes (the ones that are obviously going to be blocked up ahead at the site of the wreck) and wait until the last minute to merge. It's not that major, it just annoys the shit out of me when I'm in a rush that people figure it's ok to just skip everyone else that's been waiting and let someone else take care of their err for them (and of course, someone is always nice enough to let these people merge in, it'd be just as asshole-ish to block them out, I suppose).
Do unto others what has been done to you.

I feel the same way as you. I'm pretty sure people see the merge sign too during construction, but I hate those bastards that speed to pass everyone who is showing respect to get in as soon as possible.

I stopped and giggled like a schoolgirl here in Austin one time when about 8 patrol cars were ticketing EVERY car that rode on the shoulder to pass a line of cars instead of merging into traffic. The intersection always has people swinging out onto the shoulder and causing accidents. I just couldn't believe the sheer number of cars they had pulled over at once  I think there were at least 20 there, and you would think that some of them would have thought NOT to take the shoulder when there were cops all over it with their lights on.

That is fucking awesome. If you can point me to an article in the Statesman documenting that event I'll send it to the local Public Safety office here as idiots drive on the shoulders ALL THE TIME here.
