Pope back in Hospital, Undergoes tracheotomy

Post by Animalor »

I'd be surprised if he was able to live out the year. The question is though, will he step down or stay in position till he passes away.

Quite sad.

Well we had the technology in the 70s.. I don't see why we couldn't have a Six Million Dollar Pope.

With modern medicine and feeding tubes, they might be able to keep him ticking for 10 more years. Has a Pope ever stepped down? I think they remain Pope until death right?

He's the Pope, winnow, he doesn't want to burn in hell for all eternity.

/not going to comment about some earlier popes, however.

With the technology we have today to keep him barely alive for a long long time, it's probably a toss up between burning in hell or being on life support for eternity.

Talking about these?
Antipope
A false claimant of the Holy See in opposition to a pontiff canonically elected. At various times in the history of the Church illegal pretenders to the Papal Chair have arisen, and frequently exercised pontifical functions in defiance of the true occupant. Hergenröther enumerates thirty in the following order:

Hippolytus (?), III century
Novatian, 251
Felix II, 355-365
Ursicinus, 366-367
Eulalius, 418-419
Laurentius, 498-501
Constantine II, 767
Philip, VIII century
Anastasius, 855
Leo VIII, 956-963
Boniface VII, 974
John XVI, X century
Gregory, 1012
Sylvester III, 1044
Benedict X, 1058
Honorius II, 1061-72
Guibert or Clement III, 1080-1100
Theodoric, 1100
Aleric, 1102
Maginulf, 1105
Burdin (Gregory VIII), 1118
Anacletus II, 1130-38
Victor IV, 1159-64
Pascal III, 1164-68
Calixtus III, 1168-77
Innocent III, 1178-80
Nicholas V, 1328-30
Robert of Geneva (Clement VII), 20 September, 1378 to 16 September, 1394
Amadeus of Savoy (Felix V), November, 1439 to April, 1449

he isnt going to step down.

if he "steps down", rest assured it is a coup.

He personally believes and has stated publically, that the Holy Mother - a major deity to Catholics (even though they say she's not a deity, she has all the powers of one - if you are to believe them -, they just pretend she isnt one because it is inconsistent with the Scriptures)- anyway he has said publically that in 1980 she physically altered the path of the bullet that was fired at him in the assassination attempt.

Days ago he said that the Virgin Mary interceeded on his behalf to again save his life.

Mary is a central figure to Catholics, and for the Pope - God's conduit to humanity - to say that the Holy Mother has kept him alive, not once, but twice tells you that this man is not going to step down.

She didnt keep him alive to be the first Pope to EVER "retire".

At any rate, back here on planet earth most people don't get "elective tracheotomy's" for "the flu" so, i wouldn't really believe the "official" messages until he is actually dead. Which will probably be soon, let's be honest.

Well, it has sounded like there is more of a problem than just the Flu. Is it Parkinson's that he is also suffering from?

Also, my question about if he stepped down isn't really how would another be selected, but what would he be then? Would he still be considered a/the Pope until death while another served as the Pope as well?

I am just wondering what would happen IF a Pope were to step down in this type of situation. I don't see it happening either. Just curious since I am not Catholic and unfamiliar with the process.

I'm not a very religous person, but grew up a Catholic and familiar with the stories.

But thinking as more of a scientific / technical person vs. a religous person, you have to agree that someone, even JP2, who claims that Mary saved him, there has got to be a little bit of "coocoo for coacoa puffs" going on.

i wasnt even trying to imply he was crazy. i am simply saying, a person with that level of belief that agents of God are actively preserving his life for a specific purpose, is not going to 'quit' that very purpose.

Doctors, you have done a terrible job keeping me healthy. In the hospital, out of the hospital, back in the hospital, you just haven't been able to make the decisions that are in my best interest. Frankly, it's been a disaster. I'm the friggen Pope for crying out loud, how hard should it be to keep someone as blessed as myself in good working order.

I'm sorry doctors,

Haha Winnow :)

Spot on Voronwe, I think it's highly unlikely he plans on retiring, looking back on his "reign" I doubt he would come this far just to step down (and be the first of the modern era to do so).

Surely he will be gone in the next few months though.....

Hehe, i still try to forget one of his speeches. Cant remember if it was New Year or Christmas 1 or 2 years back, but i can remember him sitting and muttering more or less to himself, then going quiet for a while, and one of the danish commentators only had this to say "now hes talking with God".

There ought to be a forced retirement on the Pope too. Hell, in the old days, they could at least try to poison him or something (wonder how many popes died natural deaths, anyone care to look?), but nowadays, we got a senile old fool whos word are law in one of the most powerfull religions.

They don't know if popes were poisoned or killed because autopsies are not allowed to be performed on bodies of Popes.
