I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

I find it hard not to have compassion for a man that lived in a land where the US and Britian arrived after World War 2, took their country away, gave it to European refugees, and ignored their plight for over half a century, who is fighting for the freedom and self determination that they rightly deserve.
At the same time, I will not mourn the loss of someone who has been directly responsible for so many deaths and has stymied an progress towards peace resolution (heh, nevermind, it is still a nice idea!).

My first thought was "good".
I feel for his daughter, beyond that nothing.
He was a terrorist. I don't care what his initial motivation was, anyone who advocates and\or participates in the slaughter of innocents to make a point should be hunted down and killed like a dog.
Getting a pineapple pounded up his ass every morning for the next 1000 or so years would be about right.
Don't remeber which movie I saw that in (to Hitler?)
*Edit - Wow, the Boston globe printed something sensible:

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editor ... e_monster/In a better world, the PLO chief would have met his end on a gallows, hanged for mass murder much as the Nazi chiefs were hanged at Nuremberg. In a better world, the French president would not have paid a visit to the bedside of such a monster. In a better world, George Bush would not have said, on hearing the first reports that Arafat had died, "God bless his soul."

It was in Adam Sandlers Little Nicky, Harvey Keitel as the devil kicking pineapples up Hitlers ass on a daily basis.Aabidano wrote: Getting a pineapple pounded up his ass every morning for the next 1000 or so years would be about right.

I think it doesn't matter as either is probably a translitteration of how is name is spelled in the arabic aphabet.Drinsic Darkwood wrote:So is it Yassir Arafat or Yasser Arafat? I've never really bothered to care but seeing multiple news sources spelling it with an E and then an I just irks me.

Yeah, that happens a lot, which is why you tend to see a lot of the same words spelled different ways. Usually, the English spelling is just based on the phonetic pronunciation of the Arabic word.Lohrno wrote:I think it doesn't matter as either is probably a translitteration of how is name is spelled in the arabic aphabet.Drinsic Darkwood wrote:So is it Yassir Arafat or Yasser Arafat? A neat example of this in reverse is Pepsi. Since there isn't a "p" in Arabic, they just use the letter "b", so it is spelled (and pronounced) "Bebsi" in Arabic.

I like this Charles guy!It is a legacy in two parts: means and ends. The means? Violence. Arafat invented modern terrorism: airplane hijackings, kidnappings, and the spectacular mass murder, like the Olympic massacre of 1972. Others had tried it. Arafat perfected it. He turned terror into a brilliantly successful political instrument, a vehicle to international recognition and respect. The man who murdered more innocent Jews than anyone since Hitler died an international hero. The president of France bowed to his casket. The secretary-general ordered UN flags to fly at half-staff.

Arafat was no great statesman, but he wasn't even close to Hitler.

I find it quite difficult to believe, but I was just talking to someone at work who said that he heard a rumor that Arafat died of AIDS and that there is an effort to keep that information under wraps. It was merely secondhand information that he got from someone who works for the news department of one of the major networks, but I thought I'd post it here in case anyone else had heard anything along those lines.
