I heard Kerry has a plan and would be a good replacement. The plan for world peace will be revealed if he gets the job.

I find it hard not to have compassion for a man that lived in a land where the US and Britian arrived after World War 2, took their country away, gave it to European refugees, and ignored their plight for over half a century, who is fighting for the freedom and self determination that they rightly deserve.

At the same time, I will not mourn the loss of someone who has been directly responsible for so many deaths and has stymied an progress towards peace resolution (heh, nevermind, it is still a nice idea!).

So you find it hard not to mourn the loss you have compassion for.

Well thought out Arch

Just busting on you.

I find it hard to believe nobody, throughout the years, bought this guy a Norelco shaver for his birthday. Jesus.

saddest thing is how this jerk got rich while so many people he claimed to be fighting for their freedom, were in such dire poverty.

Although the Palestinians will mourn him, his death is the best thing that could ever happen to them. President Bush's reply during a press conference, when told prematurely of Arafat's death, "May God bless his soul," is much kinder than my thoughts.

I think it will be a good thing for the area. I definitely wouldn't say I have any compassion for him but many people should take a look at his life as to how someone who starts out with a just cause can go so wrong with it on so many levels.

My first thought was "good".

I feel for his daughter, beyond that nothing.

He was a terrorist. I don't care what his initial motivation was, anyone who advocates and\or participates in the slaughter of innocents to make a point should be hunted down and killed like a dog.

Getting a pineapple pounded up his ass every morning for the next 1000 or so years would be about right.

Don't remeber which movie I saw that in (to Hitler?) :)

*Edit - Wow, the Boston globe printed something sensible:
In a better world, the PLO chief would have met his end on a gallows, hanged for mass murder much as the Nazi chiefs were hanged at Nuremberg. In a better world, the French president would not have paid a visit to the bedside of such a monster. In a better world, George Bush would not have said, on hearing the first reports that Arafat had died, "God bless his soul."

So is it Yassir Arafat or Yasser Arafat? I've never really bothered to care but seeing multiple news sources spelling it with an E and then an I just irks me.

I think it doesn't matter as either is probably a translitteration of how is name is spelled in the arabic aphabet.

But the question is: Would those of you who said you'd like him killed say the same about Sharon? Personally, I don't like either of them. But I do believe things will get worse now.

Yeah, that happens a lot, which is why you tend to see a lot of the same words spelled different ways. Usually, the English spelling is just based on the phonetic pronunciation of the Arabic word.

A neat example of this in reverse is Pepsi. Since there isn't a "p" in Arabic, they just use the letter "b", so it is spelled (and pronounced) "Bebsi" in Arabic.

It is a legacy in two parts: means and ends. The means? Violence. Arafat invented modern terrorism: airplane hijackings, kidnappings, and the spectacular mass murder, like the Olympic massacre of 1972. Others had tried it. Arafat perfected it. He turned terror into a brilliantly successful political instrument, a vehicle to international recognition and respect. The man who murdered more innocent Jews than anyone since Hitler died an international hero. The president of France bowed to his casket. The secretary-general ordered UN flags to fly at half-staff.

Hrmm, have the jews been at war anywhere else than the gaza strip since WWII?

Arafat was no great statesman, but he wasn't even close to Hitler.

Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt have all invaded (and have themselves been invaded by) Israel since its formation.

I find it quite difficult to believe, but I was just talking to someone at work who said that he heard a rumor that Arafat died of AIDS and that there is an effort to keep that information under wraps. It was merely secondhand information that he got from someone who works for the news department of one of the major networks, but I thought I'd post it here in case anyone else had heard anything along those lines.

Probably not true...
