I think Depp is shitty selection for this role. He is definitely no Gene Hackman. Jack Black would be a much better cast for the role.

Gene Hackman is relevant how? Marla Singer is Charlie's mom!

The nightmares would be more horrid if Marilyn Manson was in this as Wonka. Then I might watch it, that and if Tim Burton wasn't directing

Still though, fuck Depp.

Anything that has to do with Willie or Charlie and a Chocolate Factory should be rated NC-17 at the minimum.

I can see Depp doing an OK job in this role. He's got the weird factor down.

We should have a poll of what fucked you up the most as a kid:

-The fat kid getting sucked up the chocolate tube.
-The girl that ballooned into a blueberry.
-The rich girl sent down the waste disposal to the incinerator.
-Charlie almost getting chopped up by the blades at the top of the floating soda gas room.
-Those freaky Oompa Loompas

Hehe, Gene Wilder is no Gene Hackman either.

Neither are all but 1 actor :)

I must admit i never actually SAW the original movie, only read the book, but i think Depp will do it quite well.

Look at his roles in the past, unlike some people (Jack Black for example), Depp arent typecasted, almost all his roles are WAY apart from each other (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Pirates of the Carribian, Secret Window, Fear an Loathing in Las Vegas). That in my eyes show enormous talent and potential, and i think hell be perfect for the role.

The original owned. Why bother with a remake?
It didn't scare me though cos (a) I'd read the book and (b) we had Dr Who to watch on TV. NOTHING is so terrifying.

Personally, I loved the movie as a kid, but I kind of always liked the "darker" movies. I'm looking forward to this; I think Depp will do a fantastic job as usual.

Actually I enjoyed the movie greatly - nice family flick!

The most *painful* for me may have been Charlie and the blades, but I still loved it regardless.

Well actually my point was, Gene Wilder was a great comedian, I mean top notch amazing comedian, but Charlie and the Chocolate Factry is not a comedy, and Depp is a superior actor to Wilder

Gene Hackman played a decent Lex Luther in the Superman movie.

i loved the original movie, which is odd because i don't do well with actual horror films, and this movie apparently scared the shit out of a lot of kids.

i'm really excited to see depp play wonka. he's probably one of only a handful of actors dynamic enough to pull this off. from what i've read, some of the other actors who were considered: Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Christopher Walken, Nicolas Cage and Michael Keaton. i just hope they didn't cast a bunch of retards to play the kids.

it looks like the boy they cast to play charlie bucket is also working with depp in "finding neverland." hopefully he'll be comfortable with depp and do a good job.

from imdb:
Johnny Depp was so impressed with Freddie Highmore's performance in 'Finding Neverland (2004)' that he convinced Tim Burton to cast him as Charlie Bucket.

I could see Christopher Walken or maybe Robin Williams playing Wonka really well, but Cage or especially Keaton would've been just weird, in a bad way. Glad he chose Depp.

Hehe, yeah, Cage and Keaton would suck at that role. Not sure Walken would be good either.

Keaton was a damn good comedic actor early on in his career however, I don't think this might be a great role for him.

Willie Wonka <> to Charlie. I would be dissappointed if Charlie tried to act exactly like Willie. Depp looks to have the original Charlie's chin in that pic.

I agree 100%. Never(and still to this day) liked horror films. I always loved Willie Wonka, even liked the music as a kid. I never really thought of the "scared" factor myself for some reason.

Eh, Robin Williams can portray strange and creepy characters pretty well. When I think of Robin Williams in a movie, I try to think of roles like Seymour in One Hour Photo, not shit like Mrs. Doubtfire~

No - Mrs. Doubtfire is Robin Williams. Once he did that movie his entire career was classified under exclusively slapstick comedy. Similarly, after Al Gore lost in 2000, he did SNL, which scarred his career (mainly with the hot tub scene with an SNL artist playing Joe Lieberman) in the sense that he would never do politics again.

On that note, Al Gore would be a great Wonka.

I must admit, I had a hard time taking the killer in Insomnia seriously, but he made a great performance as Sey in One Hour Photo. Maybe it's because he looked a lot different than in most of his appearances.

Keaton's best movie was invariably Johnny Dangerously. Depp could not possibly top Pirates of the Carribean with this one. And Gene Wilder....lets just say that nothing could top Stir Crazy.

Chid is right about Keatons best movie. Mr. Mom by far. Batman was the downfall of his career. Its hard to recover from such an absolute piece of garbage film.

Cage's entire career has been downhill since Raising Arizona. He'll never surpass that movie.

Walken is way too evil to play Willy. I cant see him lighting up with a big smile when Charlie returns the Never Ending Gobstopper.....or is it the Everlasting Gobstopper....I cant remember

I think Depp is the best choice for te role. But regardless, its a Tim Burton movie, so most likely it will be crap.

And whats the deal with him taking pure movie classics like Willy Wonka and Planet of the Apes and trying to remake them in his image. Before we know it, he'll be remaking The Wizard of Oz, starring Hillary Duff.

STOP FUCKING WITH THE CLASSICS BURTON.
