Just trying to understand what a bible thumper would have against attempting to preserve moral standards..
"Wow-- FOX turned into a hardcore porn channel so slowly I never even noticed!" -- Marge Simpson
Goddammit please dont tell me you believe in that.
The government has no place to regulate "morality" and opress personal "moral" belifs on the people. If people are offended by something, they can choose not to listen/watch/pay attention to it.
Im more passionate on this issue then probably any other.
But should parents do a better job of not allowing their children to view/listen to inappropriate material instead of trying to remove the material from society?
The problem with today's kids is lazy parenting, not exposure to Howard Stern. Parents who blame the rest of the world for the problems of their children. I know parents who take the time to properly raise their children and they don't seem to have a problem with their kids acting out. But it's much easier to point a finger at other sources.
I'm not so sure it's "lazy parenting," so much as absentee/exhausted parenting. The economic "necessity" of both parents working means that:
a) neither parent is able to spend adequate time with their child
b) such time as parents have to spend with their child they are tired from working all day
What kids really need is consistency and time devoted to them by significant people in their lives. A person they see for 3 hours a day is relatively insignificant. Kids need to have, not solely someone who punishes misbehaviour but someone they can model good behaviours after.
A person they see for 3-4 hours a day who spends the bulk of that time correcting misbehaviour is not providing adequate models of how
to behave (kids won't internalize this).
The reality is kids need attention both corrective and exemplary. Yup parents need to monitor their kids exposure to external media. But to have a significant impact on their behaviours we need to be with them a significant portion of their time, if we aren't then their models are whomever is with them most.
