The explanation (that I can actually accept, really) is that it's how he last appeared before turning to the Dark Side. Yoda and Ben got old, Anakin didn't while good.

Why would Luke see Ben as a younger Ben? :P He met him when he was elderly. Same with the Yoders. Replacing the plump anakin with the bad-acting one was a bit silly, since Luke only saw his father's face when he was about to die... I can almost buy that replacement, but replacing Ben or Yoda would make even less sense...then again, when does Lucas make changes that make sense?

At least he didn't sub all of the guns for walkie talkies....

Heh, I just read something from Lucas that said pretty much what you just said but instead stated that its the the version of Anakin when he "died" before becoming Vader. But my counter argument would be that Luke sensed that Anakin was still in Vader and he even came out for a brief moment before his death thus Anakin never really "died", so that negates what Lucas says.

So in conclusion, Fuck you Lucas.

I would like to second that.

Fuck you, Lucas.

Kind of off topic, but I wonder if you have to sign a waiver saying that you wont mention "Howard the Duck" for George Lucas to give you an interview.

I picked it up the other day, haven't had a chance to watch them though. As far as the listed changes for this set, it absolutely amazes me that anyone could get worked up over them.

gotta hand it to lucas. hes got an entire fanbase screamin down his neck. he gives them the bird, does it his way, and wins.
In just one day, Tuesday, $115 million worth of Star Wars Trilogy DVDs and the LucasArts videogame Star Wars Battlefront was plucked off retail shelves worldwide, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment said Wednesday. Today's (Thursday) Daily Variety pointed out that most of the $115 million goes to Lucas's companies which pays a flat fee to Fox to distribute all the home video versions of the Star Wars movies except the original one. (It was not explained how profits are shared for the current set, given the fact that the original film, Episode 4, is included with Episode 5 and 6.) The three-film set is priced at $69.98, but it has been discounted by many retailers. (Amazon has it listed for $41.99.)

Nah it's just a vocal minority. Most people take Chmee's line. Of the 20 or so people in my office that have purchased it, not one is complaining about the changes. They're all happy with their purchase.

Lucas' constant tinkering has driven me to movie piracy.

Well that's a given! Grab the movies in Divx format and then edit the offending scenes back to their original form...

actually even w/out piracy you could really geek out and use DVD shrink to decipher, edit the scenes, then burn the movie back to DVD. I'm sure it will happen if it already hasn't!

It would take more than that to splice out Greedo taking a shot at Han. Besides, more revisions are the last thing we need.

I really hated Greedo shooting first, it took a lot away from Han's character. I honestly prefer him waxing Greedo as he did originally. I also didnt care for the old Jaba/Han scene, the new one looks to be better but I have not seen it

Well, after watching it (well 2/3rds of it, I was too tired to finish it) the small changes to A New Hope are improvements from the previous "improvements". The Han/Greedo scene is still plain wrong, but they fire almost simultaneously now. Han still "jerks" a bit to the side, but much less.

A friend at work brought up an interesting point of view.
He has a problem with the plot problems rather than the scene rewrites.

Things like why wouldn't C3P0/R2D2 have some clue as to who luke is? Skywalker couldnt be that common a name. Why dont the droids recognize Obi wan, and vice versa.

Things like that.

We had a discussion of that a long time ago. A possiblity is that their memory gets erased in the 3rd episode.
