Well, it looks like that fuck Lucas isn't going to be releasing the originals ever again. From the reviews I've seen, the special edition crap is in, as is the horrible "Greedo shoots first" scene in the cantina. IMO, the special edition effects look like shit when pasted over the older generation effects.
I just want the original movies, untouched. Apparently that's too much to ask.
I hope George Lucas gets ascending bowel cancer, and dies screaming for his mommy.

Anyway, is there anywhere we can get DVD quality rips of the original originals?

The best you're likely to get is a VHS copied to DVD.
Were the originals ever released on laser disc? That would be one way I suppose, if you could find a laser disc player..
At the time, the movies were great, and they'd still be good for a viewing but anytime I think of Star Wars now I think of Episode 1 & 2 and lose any desire to watch any of them at all. Not having them on DVD therefore isn't that important.
Remember Return of the Jedi? All the cute wookies. Episode 3 need the same to attract the audience.
The REAL title will soon be revealed:
Return of the Jar-Jar Clone Wars, where LOTS of Jar-Jar clones gone bad kill all the jedis

Sold my laserdisc along with a pretty kick-ass entertainment system when I moved to the US to fund first year of classes (stupid scholarship system doesn't cover the first year!). I wish I still had it!
Funny thing, I was just over at my parents last night and my dad had hooked up the laserdisc again. We pulled out that huge Star Wars Laserdisc set and started watching
I just ordered some DVD's of the originals that were taken from the Laserdisc masters, its a 4 disc DVD set, looks like a pretty professional set as well, good covers / cases / disc images. When I get them I'll post about the quality here.

Please do, and if they're good, ordering infoz might be nice, too!

I don't think Lucas gets it. When you think of a song from your past that you liked and want to hear it again, you want the exact song and not a remix. The same holds true for movies. When I think of Star Wars I remember what I saw and when I saw it. I don't want a modified version.
I may have copies on DVD of the laserdisc burns from japan, and they may all be in 5.1 surround sound, and they may all have menus, blah blah blah that you find on normal dvds etc.
I may be saying that they are of excellent quality...are they maybe the same quality as the ones coming out in a few weeks. No. But then again, I only maybe own them...so...
Han shoots first, that is all I can say...oh, and I'm also saying that I only maybe own these...

I'm thinking that maybe you should find an FTP server and maybe accidentally post about it..
I only maybe own these, and I definitely don't know how to use ftp sites/servers whatever. I also definitely don't have a DVD burner to burn a copy of the dvd set that I *may* own...
I'm very sorry Honestly, I am
Edit: These are it, basicly, I got mine (maybe) from a good ole dvd ripper street vendor.
There are torrents around that are laserdisc rips of the 1977 versions compressed. Ive got em compressed onto a single DVD each and they're very decent quality though the sound is only Prologic.
But I don't mind the 90s versions myself. Apart from Han shooting first and the shonky Jabba tail screen (which I can somewhat forgive anyway because it was really pushing the CG effects envelope at the time and is no worse than the heinously visible rotoscoping of the original trilogy) I think they're improvements over the original. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be and for my money the polished up and repopulated set piece CG battles are teh win. And I'm a sucker for that supershiny colour correction and THX repolish stuff that they do.
PS: (Edit) Does everyone bitch about the Indy Trilogy DVDs as well? THey were polished up here and there too. Where is the snobbish purist ranting? Did I miss it?
I think it is more a difference of polish up vs. overhaul. I have the Indian Jones dvds and I can't really tell what was "polished up". Give me the Star Wars dvds, and you can see every peice of the movie was overhauled. Some of it great, some of it down right "why? why, why, why?!?!"
The Indy DVD's didn't have anything that you would consider a change. They unstretched some frames that were stretched for widescreen -> tv format. Cleaned up some shitty color decay on film. There weren't any additions though.

Very true, although I have to admit the only redeeming scene in EPll was "new Yoda" unleashing a can of whup ass. Threwout the entire 4-5-6 series I saw that little dude and thought to myself...no way in hell could he do any physical damage, lightsabre style, so i wonder how the hell a 2 foot tall goblin dude with a cain could be so powerfull...episode 2 answered that question for me!
-xzionis human mage on mannoroth
-zeltharath tauren shaman on wildhammer
Ep.1's redeeming feature was Qui-Gon. He and Obi-Wan fighting the droidekas and carving the door open at the beginning and the 3-way kickarse saber fight at the end are the only watchable parts of the whole thing. And jar jar isn't the biggest travesty IMO. Wtf was Brian Blessed thinking. . .
Ok I got the DVDs, they are rips of the laserdisc so the video isn't quite as good as DVD of course. They have about a 3.5 bitrate, most movies now are using like 5-10. They don't have the audio commentary tracks that I have found, and the sound is in just prologic. They removed all indication of where the disc changes were and the 4th disc does include some interviews and documentaries along with a few galleries. I seem to remember an hour long documentary though on the laserdisc that I don't see here. But then I haven't gone all the way through the 4th disc yet (spending most of my time building my new computers). Unfortunately it looks like Ebay caught wind of what he was doing as they pulled all his auctions a day after I got mine. I noticed a few new ones up though that have some new wording in the auction so it should keep them up.
The laser discs I had were identical to the original VHS tapes. A second edition of VHS tapes were released that showed a few changes (like the Jabba tail scene), but nothing story-changing, as I recall.
f Lucas, that is all.
There is not enough disk space available to delete this file, please delete some files to free up disk space.
Bumbaz, you got screwed! Mine have dolby Digital 5.1 surround....maybe of course. There is definitely a bit rate issue though in some scenes, but the video quality is the same as dvds...its the sound that doesn't always keep up.
Five major changes in the 'Star Wars' DVD

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- George Lucas made several changes in "Star Wars" when the film was re-released in 1997. With the "Star Wars" trilogy on DVD, he's tinkered a little more. Here are five changes Lucas made:
5. Jedis don't scream
The 1997 special edition version of "The Empire Strikes Back" was changed so Luke wails as he jumps off the platform in Cloud City. In the only instance of Lucas undoing a later alteration (sadly, Greedo still shoots first on the DVD of "A New Hope"), he's taken it off the DVD edition. Maybe he realized Jedis (even ones in training) don't scream.
4. Boba Fett has a new voice
Since Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett, and Jango Fett is played by Temura Morrison, doesn't it make sense that he should sound like him, too? That's exactly what George Lucas thought, so Morrison was brought in to revoice the four lines of dialogue (yes, believe it or not there are only four!) Boba spoke in the original trilogy.
3. A new and improved Jabba
Remember that dodgy-looking computer-generated Jabba they inserted into the 1997 re-release of "A New Hope"? Well, he looks a little less dodgy this time around thanks to some improved CGI.
2. The emperor's new clothes
In the original version of "The Empire Strikes Back," the emperor Darth Vader speaks to via hologram was played by a woman in a mask (!) and voiced by Clive Revill. Again, in the interests of consistency, Ian McDiarmid -- who portrays the emperor in "Return of the Jedi" and the prequel trilogy -- now appears in that scene with an added line or two of dialogue.
1. The big finale
The 1997 special edition of "Return of the Jedi" added a few "Star Wars" worlds joining the celebration of the Empire's demise at the end of the film. For the DVD, they've added Naboo, a planet that figures prominently in the prequel trilogy. Also, Anakin Skywalker is noticeably different this time around. When he removes his Darth Vader helmet, he now has no eyebrows! It's probably safe to assume he singes them off in his battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi in next summer's "Return of the Sith" and a change had to be made.
But the most noticeable change -- and perhaps one some "Star Wars" diehards will have a tough time stomaching -- is Hayden Christensen (who plays young Anakin in the prequel trilogy) now appearing in the scene where the "force ghosts" of Anakin, Obi Wan, and Yoda smile at Luke. One thing's for sure, there's plenty for fans to debate -- that is, until the trilogy comes out yet again on another format in the future and Mr. Lucas makes his inevitable changes ...
Akaran of Mistmoore, formerly Akaran of Veeshan I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.
Q: Why not release both the originals and special editions on DVD?
LUCAS: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ...
I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be.
I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. I'm the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they're going to throw rocks at me, they're going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.
Which is why he won't get another dollar from me and I'll gladly download it instead.
Another question that I'm curious about.. the actors that got removed from the updates, are they also no longer compensated with royalties because they aren't in the movies any longers? And if so, wouldn't there be some kind of lawsuit they could do?
Until people actually start boycotting Lucas buy not buying his shit, he's not going to care what they think. And since everyone rushes out to buy it in droves..
The Best Buy in my town had sold 2 pallets worth of the new Star Wars dvd in under 12 hours. The few with the conviction to actually boycott the new dvds are like grains of sand on a beach.
While I really don't care for Hayden Christensen and think that his "acting" has been pretty shitty in the prequels, who really cares if they replaced some guy that you don't know with him in a 10 second long, non-speaking part. That really seems like a pretty minor change to be worrying about. As long as they didn't remove James Earl Jones' voice and replace it with Christensen, I don't think it's too big an issue.
"It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant."- Barack Obama
Total screen time of significant changes to the original material: 10mins
Total running time of trilogy: 388min.
I think i'll survive. And I have the laserdisc rips of the originals if I'm feeling nostalgic. Which I'm generally not when faced with the choice between old rips and shiney new remasters with 5.1 surround.

BRILLIANT! I can not believe I had not thought of that earlier! Thank you Sylvus, you will be digitally added to my next round of enhancements. I bet you look adorable with fur and leather!
So anyone got a link for the originals? Or a way to get them? Throw me a frickin bone here.
