Planning a trip to Florida next weekend?...
Think again...
At least this forecast track includes Haiti and Cuba they may take some edge off of it...Unfortunately taking the edge off it in those 2 places involves a much higher probability of death...
Ivan will be a much much stronger storm than charlie. Im seriously considering on visting a friend up north for 2 weeks or so. Just think hugo times 3 and thats Ivan. If it hits in Lil Cuba, Orlando shouldnt be that bad.
But if it turns up slightly and comes in around Vero Beach and Melbourne, You wont see Disney anymore, muchless Xouqoa when hes blown away!

The chances of 3 of those comming to central florida in one year must be less than 1 in 300...im guessing something will happen at that distance and wel be okay, the same panic came in when Earl was on a similar route.
Thanks to frances though i dont have a fucking boat dock anymore, and the part of it thats left is underwater (guess that answeres the jew ski question ) but luckily none of my rides were damaged.

The schools here are closed monday and friday, and they're evacuating the old farts and trailer trash.

Wow Cat 5.The storm currently is heading for Jamaica with 160 mph winds. The most powerful hurricane to hit the Caribbean in nearly a decade, it already has killed at least 16 people, damaged 90 percent of Grenada's homes and destroyed a prison that left criminals running loose, officials said.
Won't Jamaica and Cuba take most of the "wind" out of Ivan before it hits Florida? It looks like it's heading right over both of those islands. I recall one of the hurricanes a few years ago regaining some of it's strength while hanging out in the Gulf. According to the linked picture above, the patch is driectly north from cuba to Florida which should help keep it weakened.

Thanks Adel! Tell Esth that I'll be fine. Worst case, I go to the bank all the architects in town use as a shelter. If they think it's safe, that's good enough for me.

Yeah, I moved home last year. I never liked Tampa, and when 7/8th of my friends left I had no reason to stay longer.

Please. We have the huge windbreak called Cuba to eat these storms for us. I'm so worried that I have 4 days of COH pencilled in

Depends which part of Florida you're talking about. We're only 90 miles north of Habana, so not much time to gather power between them and us.
Now, Naples, Miami and north means another 150-200 miles of warm Gulf waters, which usually means they get a much stronger storm than us.

Florida isn't even 200 miles across (From Tampa to Vero Beach).. So no way Frances went over 300 miles of land before it got to Orlando, even going diagonal!Sionistic wrote:Im in Orlando. Frances was so weak by the time it got here that many people I know hardly considered it a tropical storm. I guess 300 miles of land weakens a storm quite a bit
Unless you mean Ivan if it comes from the South. Anyway, the projected path over Cuba isn't all tha much land either so I don't think it will weaken it a whole lot.

The land its projected to cross over Cuba is very small landmass wise, there is a lot more water it will cross after, so it will just strengthen after it passes cuba, overall it can weaken a bit, but it wont too muchAslanna wrote:Florida isn't even 200 miles across (From Tampa to Vero Beach).. Jamaica and Cuba aren't really big enough that they damage storm strength regardless of the speed of movement across them...slow movement here is bad as it increases the storm's build time...and of course slow movement along the florida coast with the eye offshore is very very bad...
That said it will continue to slow as the steering currents from an offshore high weaken...

Fuck, I think that's where my offshore sportsbook is located. Hang in there! I still have a bet or two to place on the Sunday NFL games! As of 5 p.m., Ivan's maximum sustained winds were near 165 mph (270 kph), with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. The storm was 145 miles (235 kilometers) east-southeast of Grand Cayman Island.
