Friend of mine and I were in Neriak 3rd Gate the other day, he was talking about a door that was locked and has been bugging him for ages. I got there and turns out this 'door' is a firepot, when trying to lockpick it, you get "This lock is unpickable".
Now, when I looked around the area, pressing up to the wall and such, I see a passage leading down somewhere right next to the firepot. I've checked EQAtlas and it doesnt show up. Anyone have any idea whats down there, or what key you need to unlock it?

It could be that the only purpose for your every existence, is to serve as a warning to others.

Wow, this is going back. I believe there were 2 generally accepted hypothesis about these. They were a) some GM teleport system (which is kinda redundant so I doubt), or b) was some secret, high-level transit system they'd had planned but never went through with. Of course, could be c) a bug.

At one time there was a plan to have a transit system via the firepots (ala Timorous Deep's firepot room), but it never got done.
As for the tunnel that you're likely talking of, back in beta there were NPC's in there (a merchant I believe) but again, it fell by the wayside and that area of the zone/city never got used again.
Dunno if it's still around, but there was a whole web site at one time dedicated to the "Firepot Mystery" in EverQuest. In the past Brad (McQuaid) had even commented a few times on it.

The port room is in the far SW corner of TD. You can see the spires popping up out of the water and in the middle of it there's a hole thru the ocean floor that leads into this port room. Before PoK I used to use these from time to time just for the helluva it. You can use them to get to the cities but I don't believe you can use them to get back (Hence why you can't unlock it).
