California Quake 12/22

Post by Pahreyia »

CAMBRIA, Calif. — An earthquake (search) with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 rocked the Central Coast and was felt widely throughout the region Monday.

The quake was felt as a sustained but gentle rolling motion in downtown Los Angeles.
Everyone out here in Cali okay? I was on a call with someone in Santa Barbara when it hit. Made for an interesting call.

I didn't feel it out here in City of Industry, but a few co workers swore that they did.

lol I work in City of Industry too! I sure as hell felt it, and a train was going by right behind our building.

So Pah, you live AND work near me?

You didn't feel it? Everyone I work with did...it was a long-ass quake! A roller, too...it felt like I was buzzed!

I'm on 7th & Clark. the train runs right behind me, and we still felt it! Whats wrong with you!?

I was just getting back from lunch.. so I very well could have been in the car at the time. I'm right near the tracks too on Lemon and East Business Parkway, but we've got a massive warehouse, so the sheer size of the concrete slab we're sitting on usually makes for no shakes when the trains come by.

FYI, the NRC built a nuke plant not 15 miles from there called Diablo Canyon, smack dab on the faultline. Built to withstand a 7.1 quake. Lets hope this was the big one and not a precursor to a larger quake or we will have Chernobyl in our backyard.

=\ Isn't rating a nuclear powerplant for 7.1 quakes a *bit* of an underestimation for that area?

Ummmm seems too low for the risk, but maybe I am just being logical. That plant was a running joke, they built 40% of it then realized they had the blurprints upsidedown and had to dismantle it and build it rightside up... gotta love the NRC

Actually felt some of the "rolling" up here in San Francisco

Just for shits and giggles here is an earthquake site

earthquake.usgs.gov

There have actually been 9 earthquakes today in that area (aftershocks, etc). and if you look there have been tons in the pacific area.

Question. who knows where the "big one" is that the USGS is actually worried about? I will give you a hint...it isn't on the west coast.

Having lived thru Loma Prieta (1989 quake in Santa Cruz 7.2), I can say it unnerves you for a day, then annoys you for a few more, then flat out pisses you the fuck off.

Big quake scare in terms of lives is NYC, but biggest threat (due to building codes in each of these cases) is somewhere in east texas I beleive.

I was listening to a sports show in the area that had Al Michaels onand in the middle of the interview, he commented on what felt like a quake. Later, on the the sister news station, it was announced as a 6.5. Pretty freaky listening to it as it was happening.
Probably the only thing I like about the north jersey/nyc area these days is its lack of any kind of natural disaster for the most part.

The "big one" they're worried about is in Eastern Missouri/Southern Illinois. There are no earthquake building codes in this part of the country, and if it hits in the 6-8 range as expected, say goodbye to St. Louis.

We're due for a natural disaster. Keep an eye on kyoukan. If she starts flipping out and acting crazier than normal, it's a sure sign of impending doom.

Memphis and Little Rock may well be affected by a New Madrid event as well...And of course this might well alter the Mississippi Channel...

Anything in the 1 and 2 range, you wouldn't feel, and most 3s go unnoticed as well (and if you do feel them, it's not a big deal). So there are only a couple earthquakes on that list that you'd actually notice.

---

I wouldn't say that 7.1 is an "underestimation" in terms of how likely an earthquake of that magnitude or higher would be. I believe there have only been a handful of earthquakes larger than that (definitely not many 8 or larger) in the past 100 to 150 years, if not longer. It does seem a bit odd to prepare for only a 7.1 when you're talking about a nuclear power plant, though.

We didn't feel yesterday's earthquake here in Emeryville (right near Berkeley and Oakland). Hope everything is okay for those VVers who were closer.

My thoughts exactly Etasi. The Loma Prieta quake in '89 was a 7.1...what if its epicenter was where yesterdays quake was? Do we really actually know what Diablo canyon will take? This is a nuclear reactor we are talking about here!

Quite a few more then a handful, california alone has had 13, 10 of which were strong enough to take out Diablo Canyon... to me the risk is unacceptable

I experienced the big quake in '89 as well and I think the aftershocks (as well as the original quakes) are fun. Its kind of like a lightening storm while camping, exciting and scarey as hell all at the same time.

Exactly. Only earthquakes we got here are fat chicks in bikini's.

Never could understand why people moved to a place that's likely to fall into the water at some point in time. Not only that, but they pay more than just about anywhere else in the country to do so.

Exactly. Only earthquakes we got here are fat chicks in bikini's.

Never could understand why people moved to a place that's likely to fall into the water at some point in time. Not only that, but they pay more than just about anywhere else in the country to do so.
Hurricanes.

fuck that.

Earthquakes are over-hyped. I've lived with 'em for a good chunk of my life, and only one was scarey.

I was near Oakland for the SF quake in 89 and in Upland for the quake in 86 and Landers in 92.

Earthquakes are the suck, but we don't get the fun of counting on them swirling around our state a dozen times a year.

As someone that lived in the Santa Cruz mountains in 89, I have to say..... the quake was 65 miles from SF, 4 miles from my house  We used to go smoke joints in the crack left behind by the quake, it was eerie as fuck

lol! When did they pass that one!? Actually, that was getting out of hand. People would sit ALL over the place...a few times I even saw one guy lying across the sidewalk. The cops were talking to him when I walked by on my way out, but still!
