Bush Sr. wasn't Reagan's lapdog, at least ideologically speaking. In fact, if I remember correctly, Bush was the one who came up with the term voodoo economics to describe Reaganomics (when running against him in the 1980 primary).Arundel Pajo wrote:I wasn't much of a fan of his father - he was too much Reagan's lapdog, and I think we have all seen with disastrous results just how well Reaganomics (voodoo economics, trickle down economics, etc...) actually work.

See, that didn't surprise me overmuch, Adex. You and Kyoukan have a whole lot of different beliefs, and are totally of two different political stripes, but you're a smart guy. You think things through rather than just towing the party line.
It's one thing for two people to both be well informed yet disagree, and it's something else entirely to just be contrary because because you're too lazy or ignorant to research an issue and decide for yourself where you stand on it.
The former, while disagreeing, can usually have a certain amount of respect for each other, and sometimes might agree. The latter rarely can.

look at the lavish condition hes been liveing in for the past few months.Adex_Xeda wrote:According to the man on the street interviews I saw yesterday, the big thing is most Iraqi families have had some kind of horror story incident with Saddam's former government. To them it's a great release of frustration to see him finally captured.
Also, the figurehead of a political movement was captured in a humiliating manner that helped burst the mystique he'd built up as being some kind of tough guy.
Overall I think his capture will be a morale boost of the everyday Iraqi. It's another indicator that things are indeed changing.
He's not coming back, and that is a great emotional release.

I was going to make a crack about simple-minded Canuckistanians, but the American system is based largely on Dutch units of measurement..Voronwë wrote:i think the range of 0 to 100 spanning water's liquid phase makes more sense for biological organisms =)
This will not do.It was in 1724 that Gabriel Fahrenheit, an instrument maker of Däanzig and Amsterdam, used mercury as the thermometric liquid. Mercury's thermal expansion is large and fairly uniform, it does not adhere to the glass, and it remains a liquid over a wide range of temperatures. Its silvery appearance makes it easy to read.
Fahrenheit described how he calibrated the scale of his mercury thermometer:
"placing the thermometer in a mixture of sal ammoniac or sea salt, ice, and water a point on the scale will be found which is denoted as zero. A second point is obtained if the same mixture is used without salt. Denote this position as 30. A third point, designated as 96, is obtained if the thermometer is placed in the mouth so as to acquire the heat of a healthy man." (D. G. Fahrenheit,Phil. Trans. (London) 33, 78, 1724)
On this scale, Fahrenheit measured the boiling point of water to be 212. Later he adjusted the freezing point of water to 32 so that the interval between the boiling and freezing points of water could be represented by the more rational number 180. Temperatures measured on this scale are designated as degrees Fahrenheit (° F).
In conclusion, blame the Danes.

I dunno - it's iffy. I see the Vatican's point on one hand, and on the other, I don't think he's being treated particularly badly.
The problem, as I understand it, is that to show him on national and international television being subjected to medical examinations is a violation of the Geneva Convention resolution regarding treatment of POWs.
Doesn't seem that harmful to me, but then we were moaning rather loudly when Al-Jazeera aired images of our POWs being examined. Seems disingenious to expect others to abide by something, and then not expect any sort of reaction when we don't do the same.

What nation owns and runs Al-Jazeera?
Since when do independant media outlets have to abide by and be subject to compliance with the Geneva Convention?
The Vatican isn't slamming CNN for showing the images, they are slamming the US government for releasing them to the media.
While I don't agree with the Vatican's point of view, I can understand and respect it.

...and where did Al-Jazeera get their images? I doubt there were reporters on location. Perhaps I should have been more specific in my wording.

Captain Koons: The way Saddam looked at it, these weapons was your birthright. He'd be damned if any of the american pigs were gonna get their greasy hands on his boy's birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide something: his ass.
