Athlon CPU question

Post by Ahmik »

Anyone have any real life experience with both the Classic Slot A 512k L2 cache and the 2nd type with the smaller L2 cache?

My current system has a Classic 600MHz processor and was wondering if I would notice much difference if I dropped in a 1100MHz CPU?

My new comp will be done in about a month and I am already wondering what I can do to this one to make it a better 2box'r

Any ideas? Any comments?

Thanks

That's exactly what I did. Still using it as my main system and don't see any need to upgrade in the near future.

What kind of Video card do you have in the system? And ram more importantly? Since your trying to make the second comp better most likely what your going to want is the processor upgraded and also the ram unless your video card is really really bad, as long as it's a geforce 2 though I wouldn't worry about upgrading that. Just upgrade the ram to 512 ( if it's not already ) and the processor.

The computer is a Comtrash 5868. It has 384MB of RAM. According to the Comtrash website (and also mentioned on the Kingston and Crucial sites) this system is limited to a maximum of 128MB in each of the 3 RAM slots. I have all that I can have.

The video card is a Gainward GeForce2 Ti/450 64MB DDR (here is the shitty part) the card is sitting in a 1X AGP slot.

While I have most options tunred off, with this configuration it plays just fine. I zone faster than most people (when a group ports I usually arrive at the new destination first).

I have been told that the thunderbirds suck, and that even if I go from a 600 Classic to a 900-1000 thunderbird I will have decreased performance... that is the whole nature of this thread... is it gonna suck? Am I better off the way I have it now?

Thanks

I'm running a 1.4 Thunderbird overclocked to roughly 1.6. I have no problems with it at all. Heat is never an issue anymore due to a water cooling kit. I've thought about trying to overclock more, but don't want to take the chance ;)

AT any rate your computer will be pretty badass. Your vid card is fine. Uhh, I've never heard of the thing about 128mb max per ram slot but it wouldn't surprise me considering compaq would rather force you to buy a new computer.

As far as experiences...it is different for everyone. I've heard people that say Intel sux balls, then others that say AMD runs worse than a Pentium 1. Really hard to tell. But otherwise sounds good, try it and if it don't work, go back to where you got it and raise hell :)

I've personally compared 2 machines that had identical Hardware minus motherboard and Processor. One machine was Athlon Thunderbird 1.4 Ghz, other was a P4 2.0 Ghz CPU. When running Half-life CounterStrike, I was seeing 15-20 more frames per second using the Athlon than using the P4. When it came to Multitasking, the P4 won. Of course, this wasn't in anyway a "professional" test. For multitasking, I was using a stop watch to see a difference in seconds to complete certian tasks. For the gaming, well, that was simple as we all know :D

Personally, I prefer AMD for a home/gaming machine and a Pentium for Multitasking.
