Pretty much busted xbox
This couldnt have happened at a worse time. I JUST bought morrowind game of the year edition for xbox. Last night the game froze on me. Ok no big deal, games freeze, especially for the length of time ive been playing. Then it did it again, and again, and again. I tried using compressed air to clean the vents, nothing. Ive tried using a laser disc cleaner, nothing. I tried my other games and they froze too.
This is a refurbished system so it only had a 7day warranty. I could also buy an extended warranty then send it in for repairs, but that will cost me about 50$ and 2-3 weeks.
So my question is, does anyone know a chain store that does repairs. A store I could find in many places? Ide rather have it fixed somewhere I can goto then send it off.
At least what Ive learned from all this is to never buy a refurbished system again.

I stand by my statements in this thread.Sionistic wrote:At least what Ive learned from all this is to never buy a refurbished system again.

Can you get to the dashboard setup? (Boot with no game in the drive.)
If so, try deleting the save games for Morrowind and see if that fixes it. Otherwise, you could try returning it to Wal-Mart, they take back anything - sometimes even if you didn't buy it there!
Pyrella can probably tell you how to format the HD inside it also, if you want to try that. It might be a hardware thing, though.

From what I understand, there are three different manufacturers of the dvd drives on Xbox. Apparently, the drives made by Thomson are more prone to dirty disk or disk skippage. I have a Thomson and it usually craps out on me after about 90 minutes of continuous play, more or less. I clean the drive every 10 hours and it's usully not a real problem since I can rarely play more than half that time in one sitting.

Seems to be the way to tell

Do the hacks talked about in another thread.. I think of the whole time I've owned my XBOX I've used my dvd drive for a total of 5 minutes while initially modding the system. Haven't used it once since then. You've also got more control over fixing and checking into the problem once it's hacked. Course if it's hardware, you can't take it somewhere - but you could always buy replacement parts.

Nope, but if it was in the warranty period still, Microsoft would have sent you a free box for shipping
This was something we fought over when doing tech support, but MS was VERY set on doing the work themselves.

You can tell what version it is, when appx it was mfg and where it was mfg, but s'far as I know, there's no way to tell from the code as to which drive (dvd drive) that it has in it. I did some research into seeing if it was possible after reading horror stories about the Thompson drives, but found nothing. It's luck of the draw.Boogahz wrote:I used to be able to tell which was which by the barcode visible through the "hole" in the back of the box. It has been so long though, that I cannot remember what they all stood for. Also, there are more plants cranking them out now.
btw - I ended up w/a Thompson drive and also found some threads comparing the drives, and there really aren't any of the three that are better than the others. They each seem to be able to do a certain type of disc better than the others. You can search/find more info about it on xbox-scene's forums.
You're probably correct however, the percentage of failure is way too high imo. I mean, my original atari still works as does my genesis and snes. The ps1 used to overheat like a bitch, my ps2 seems ok and my thomson xbox seems to crap out w/ dirty disk errors periodically. even have a few fucked up kotor saves because of it. It pisses me off to be honest. I really don't use the xbox anywhere near as much as I pushed my old ps1. In addition, I've heard stories that certain game saves don't carry to a memory card let alone my LIVE settings else I'd just but another one quite frankly.

You *could* tell what drive was used when you did tech support on the XBox and had access to the information. I don't do that anymore which is why I said I used to be able to.Siji wrote:You can tell what version it is, when appx it was mfg and where it was mfg, but s'far as I know, there's no way to tell from the code as to which drive (dvd drive) that it has in it.
