seriously, wtf kevin smith

Post by Kriista »

i just watched jay and silent bob strike back finally

that was the worst piece of shit ive seen in ages
i cant even begin to imagine what the cast alone cost, not to mention bullshit special effects, thankfully they saved on script since i dont think there was a new joke in the movie

maybe if your some ultra fan boy of smith movies you might get a hoot of seeing a 'cliff notes' of all his movies in one abomination, but fuck that, its not for me

i love(erm, loved) kevin smith, but whats the last good movie he did?
in my mind, there was clerks, mallrats, great movies, then chasing amy was alright, too much 'sellout humor' (too many obvious references), dogma is ok, funny but not spectacular, then a slew of crap movies

i havent seen jersey girl, but i cant say im interested(and everyone seems to agree since it bombed to hell)

im hoping hes just been making bank to make another 'good' movie without worry of going broke or something, at elast thats all i can hope

Teen #1: Uh, let me get a nickel bag.

Jay: [singing] / Fifteen bucks, little man, / Put that shit in my hand, / If that money doesn't show, / Then you owe me, owe me, owe, / My jungle love, yeah, / Owe-ee, owe-ee, owe, / I think I want to know ya, know ya, / Yeah, what?

Teen #2: What the hell are you singing?

Jay: You don't know "Jungle Love?" That shit is the mad notes. Written by God herself and sent down to the greatest band in the world: The mother-fucking Time.

Teen #1: You mean the guys in that Prince movie?

Silent Bob: Yeah, Purple Rain.

Teen #1: Man, that shit was so gay - fucking eighties style.
Yeah, not the best kevin smith movie. I liked mallrats.

I didn't have much in the way of expectations for J&SBSB but chortled through most of it. I agree you really have to have seen the other films though. The Bluntman crap at the end was lame as was most of the Ferrell/Orang-Utan shit.

I loved CLerks when I first saw it but it's hard to re-watch.
Mallrats was a miss for me.
Chasing Amy was entertaining but really fucking hard work in places.
Dogma I liked a lot.

Haven't seen JG and don't praticularly intend to. Next up is his movie verson of Green Hornet and apparently after that he's planning another J&SB movie so long as Mewes stays clean.

Clerks: Nice introductory work, it is solid, and except for the pacing being off a bit is a quirky look at America
MallRats: Ack ack Fast Times at Lamemount High, but it does have Joey Lauren Adams nude boobies!
Chasing Amy: I am surprised so many have posted as they have, this is his best to date IMHO
Dogma: Well wow, Dogma is far out, I think you have to have more than a casual knowledge of the Catholic faith to really "Get it"
J&SBSB: This was a bone tossed to the fan boys

I am going to see Jersey Girl, but I fear it. Smiths worst problem is the Afflect/Damon thing to be honest.

I've enojyed everything Kevin Smith's put out till now (Including Jersey Girl).

Mall Rats was the weakest IMHO. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was just a really fun movie imho.

The scenes with Seann William Scott were classic. The Devil/Angel scene were great as well.

This wasn't a thinkin man's flick by any means, just pure, vulgar fun.

I liked it. It was brainless humor and worked for what it was.

I found it funny, some don't. Some people think Ferrell is funny. I think he's a waste of time and I've never once laughed at anything he's done. Opinions vary.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is not supposed to be a good movie. It's supposed to be a funny, silly movie that you don't take seriously and it makes you laugh.

I have no idea how you avoided laughing at (just off the top of my head):

1. When Affleck, Jay and Bob stare at the screen asking who would pay to see a movie like the one you're watching.

2. Matt Damon and Affleck in Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season.

3. That was a lovely tea party.

4. James Vanderbeek, and that kid from American Pie.

5. Mark FUCKING Hamill.

Those scenes were hilarious. It's not supposed to be a great movie. It's supposed to be a bunch of people having fun, and being silly.

Siji,

Have you seen Old School? I was never much of a Will Farrell fan until I saw that.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

oh dont get me wrong, i see it for what it is, a big budget no brains comedy

rather, a big budget brainsy comedy for the brainless?

whatever, i just expected more from kevin smith

i mean, i could see him giggling when writing some of the stupid sitty shit, like the several witty looks into the camera(i remember 3), mark hammils hand getting cut off and all sorts of other bullshit

will ferrel being in it is fitting i think
i think some of his shit is funny, this would be among the shit i dont find funny

jay and silent bob was made solely because so many people whined for a jay and silent bob movie that smith made it almost solely to shut them up. the whole point of giving it a huge budget with lots of stupid special effects, lame story and random, pointless cameos was sort of an inside joke.

Yeah, I know a lot of people liked that movie but it just seemed like a very poor attempt at making a new Animal House. He's just not my cup o' tea, more power to those that like him though.

Van Wilder > Old School

Edit: What did Jay name the girl in J&SBSB? Boom Boom Kittyfuck? That dialog in that scene was friggin' hillarious for some reason.

Lets see, what else.

The Scooby-Doo scene

Jay trying to go down on Carrie Fisher the nun

George Carlin going down on the trucker!

The ending where everyone is coming out of the theatre from all the different Kevin Smith movies. I dunno how you can be a fan of Kevin Smith and not like that roundup.

Mark my words: Will Farrel will end up as the greatest comedic actor of our time.

Old School. Zoolander. J&SB:SB. Talk show appearances, most notably every time he's on Conan O'Brien. SNL: Harry Carey, Neil Diamond, Alex Trebek, GWB, as much as I hate to admit it when he was the male cheerleader in the recurring Cheerleader sketch was usually funny, Cowbell, the American Flag Diaper sketch, "I drive a Dodge Stratus", "Get off the shed", countless others.

That's just the quick list that I came up with sitting at my desk, I'm sure there are a lot more.

I am a huge fan of mallrats, one of my favorites from him. J&SB is prolly my least favorite of his movies (have not seen JG) but I thought it was funny.

The gasoline fight! Just the thought of that makes me laugh. I hated that movie while I was watching it but now that I think back on it there were some incredibly funny parts to it.

The only thing that would have made Jay & Silent Bob better would be if Shannon Elizabeth actually got naked for us. mmmmmmmmm

J&SBSB was the most self indulgent film of all time. That was part of the joke. The cameos were mostly friends of the little View Askew crowd Smith has ran with for years. ITs a funny movie that crosses the line of good taste numerous times, but never deliberately tries to offend anyone. The humor is lost on people who have not seen all of his previous movies, in many cases, but the whole part where they are in Hollywood was fucking hilarious no matter what movies you have seen before.

Clerks has a huge fan following because the dialog style was so original and true to life. Its still a classic, but I don't think it is the best movie in the series by any stretch, it just happens to be the first.

I found Mallrats funnier, mostly because I laugh my ass off at Jason Lee and get most of the comic book jokes. Most people thought Mallrats stunk, but I liked it a lot more than Clerks.

Chasing Amy was mostly serious, but extremely funny. I liked it about as much as Mallrats. Where Mallrats was cartoony, Chasing Amy was social and serious with no slapstick humor at all. It was much more storytelling than the earlier movies.

Dogma is still my favorite movie by Smith, mostly because of the sheer hubris of the subject matter and the fact that he manages to portray god and angels as actual likeble characters with a sense of humor. Its humor is very slapstick in places and dark, but it also has some great dialog and characters. This movie offended a lot of people for completely the wrong reasons. Too bad for them, really. If the crispies really wanted to reach young people, this movie would be a great start.

Jersie Girl was a great movie. I enjoyed it more than any other movie I have seen in the last two years, aside from ROTK. Great acting, great dialog, and good humor. Too bad it had the stigma of Beniffer hanging over it, because Afleck was the best I have ever seen him since, ironically, Chasing Amy.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

The people that were offended with Dogma were, imo, offended not because of what the movie said or did, but the fact that it was a comedy that dealt with religion. The movie does not portray God or religion in a bad light, it simply asks you to question the church....not God, not your faith, your church (specifically the Catholic Church) and the silly man made rules and interpretations of the bible.
