Which ballad is better?

Post by Clatis »

Between Homer and Dante, who do you think wrote a better epic poem?

Heh, I edited the title, it is a ballad- written in stanza's and all that, who would want to sing 500 or 900 pages of a book...

they are both Epics tho.

and yeah, I dunno what I was thinking when I put play, my mistake :|

I enjoyed Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy more... I don't know why, perhaps because we reviewed it and went in depth in each of the different cantos in school, and I had to read The Odyssey as a make-up type thing in order to compare the two for a report.

I like them both but Divine Comedy is the harder read. Lots of names that wont mean anything to you so you'll need a translation with good footnotes. Which means you'll spend half your time reading those.

I absolutely love the Inferno. I try and read it at least every six months, it's an amazing piece of work.

I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

Yes!! I couldn't agree more, for some reason it fascinates me, and if I'm not reading anything else and I catch a glimpse of it somewhere in my room I'll pick it up and read a few sections.

Without the slightest doubt, the divine commedy. Although Inferno is certainly the most well-known of the three parts, Paradiso and Purgatorio are not any less incredible.
The odyssey is nice. It's also easier to read, making it much more accessible to the average reader.

I'm actually reading The Inferno right now, and I have one with really good footnotes. Was kinda boring at first, but now seems pretty cool, on Canto XII right now.

I've read both - the Odyssey is, imo, a much more important piece of literature and in a general sense I think Homer > Dante in most aspects

I think "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" is teh bestest ballad...
"There is at least as much need to curb the cruel greed and arrogance of part of the world of capital, to curb the cruel greed and violence of part of the world of labor, as to check a cruel and unhealthy militarism in international relationships." -Theodore Roosevelt
