Questions for those that push FOR ATI cards
What type of systems are you running? Processors, CPU's, and which ATI cards?
I am wondering if it's just something with the boards that I have purchased which caused all of the problems with the cards I have had.

Well, first time ATI purchaser here... So I wouldn't say I push for them. I just went with the 9800Pro since in the benchmarks I read it was the fastest out there overall. (Well, before the 98800XT. But nobody needs a $500 video card!)Boogahz wrote:What type of systems are you running? Processors, CPU's, and which ATI cards?

Anyway, it's in a Intel P4 3.0GHz. Asus motherboard (P4C800-E Deluxe). No overclocking of either.
Haven't noticed any problems so far.

I was using a 9600PRO with an AMD 2400+ and had constant problems. I don't know if the cards just got better with the newer models, but saying the 9800 is good better be so if they cost 3-500 bucks.
I am mainly wondering about those cards before the 9800 came out. The one I have is POWERCOLOR RADEON 9600PRO EZ Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "R96-D3G", and I have contemplated either returning it or trying to build around it. I have the option to get all but about 30 buck of what I spent back, but I don't have too long to decide which is why I posted here.
Or, I could go for this one for ~ $177.00

Well I did have a problem when I first got it. I put it into my existing system, consisting of a Abit KT7A-Raid motherboard, which was supposedly AGP 4x, but it wouldn't work; I couldn't even boot up. But that's probably more of a problem with an old motherboard than the video card. So in addition to a new video card I also had to go buy a new system, basically.

The main problem I kept having is that the card itself wouldn't run in AGP mode at all. The S.M.A.R.T.G.A.R.T software kept putting it back in VGA mode, and I was able to find software to remove that...but still no AGP. The board I have supports 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x. I am running an 8x in it now, and set it at 4x just to see how it worked, and things were fine then too. I think that if I could somehow get the card recognized and to use AGP mode it would be fine.
I agree. It's easy to blame the video card but that's not always the problem. Make sure you flash your BIOS to the latest version and check the support forums to see if anyone else with your motherboard is having problems.Aabidano wrote:I had that happen, turned out to be a BIOS problem, nothing to do with the ATI card.

About once a week, I am building a P4 3.0Ghz system on the Asus P4C800-E Deluxe board ( a wonderful MB). Usually, I am using the 9800 XT card and I have had one malfunction and returned for RMA in the past 2 months.
At home, I am running an Asus A7N8X board with an Athlon 2800 and a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. No issues with this setup either.

Boog, are you running an ATI Retail box card? or an offbrand with an ATI processor, when I was doing my research for my 9700+ I chose it becuase there were stable drivers out there that let me clock it at the 9800 benchmark.... Course, this is my first ATI card after a whole lot of Nvidia, but Im loving the ATI.
