Groundhog Day

Post by Sylvus »

A friend and I had an argument at the bar the other night over whether Groundhog Day with Bill Murray was a good movie. In the resulting survey we took, some interesting trends started revealing themselves and I wanted to see if they hold on a larger statistical sampling.

Please only answer if you've seen it.

Thanks.

Anything with Bill Murray is decent. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember it was an okay movie, so I voted as such.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

I really dug it. It may not be in my top ten, but it definately was an excellent movie and worthy of repeat viewing. :)

It was a great movie with first two to three hundred times I saw it, but it started to dwindle a bit after that.

So far it's appearing that our initial findings may have been off. We found that while some of both men and women found it only "okay", there wasn't a man who said it was awful and not a woman who said it was great.

Perhaps chicks who play video games and read message boards are just inherently cooler than other women. =)

can't really imagine there is someone who might think this movie was awful, some parts are rehashed several times and even though I like Cher the "I got you babe" song was getting on my nerves after first 10 times, it was still great to see the different twists and improvements that Bill tried to pull off each day.

There's this new movie with Sandler/Barrymore coming out soon that seems like a bit of a clone of Groundhog Day, wonder what's that gonna be like. I doubt anything will come close to the appeal of Bill Murray /Andie McDowell had.

Interesting point. My guess is that that idea would be associated w/ getting your dream woman at any cost w/ no reprecussions. It was probably also more entertaining for men because because it empowered them while Andie was, essentially, the toy of the movie for a guy who, from a "looks" point of view, would never even get the time of day for her.

I love the movie, I can watch it whenever it is on and not get tired of it... heh, one weekend when i was doing a lot of work around the house, there was a Groundhog Day marathon (probably Groundhog Day), and despite it being on like 6 times in a row, i kept sitting down to watch it when i took a break.

I loved it and still do. I saw it again just a couple weeks ago. I don't know why chicks wouldn't like it. Usually chicks like the bad-guy-who-grows-into-a-sensitive-guy stuff. Plus, what girl didn't want Andie McDowell's hair back then? (not that we'd want it now...)

Groundhog Day is tomorrow, remember to watch this movie this weekend!
wikipedia wrote:Although it did not do exceptionally well in its original cinematic release (grossing some $70.9M in North Amercia), the movie has had a second life on video and cable. Originally noted as an uplifting romantic comedy by critics, it has since entrenched itself as one of the great American films of the late twentieth century: The film is number thirty-four on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Funniest Movies, and Roger Ebert has revisited it in his "Great Movies" series.

This film is number 32 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies". In Total Film's 1990s special issue, Groundhog Day was deemed the best film of 1993.In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted it the seventh greatest comedy film of all time. As of January 2007, it was number 168 on the Top 250 Movies of all time, as rated by members of the Internet Movie Database, with an 8.0 rating out of 10.

That's a bit bold. That 168 out of 250 seems more accurate. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but nowhere near the funniest. A more accurate statement would be it's Murray's 7th funniest film.

Bill has lots of good comedies but I also liked two of his serious roles in The Razor's Edge and Lost in Translation.

Love Groundhog Day, and tend to like Bill Murray in general. I would say my favorite movie with him though is The Royal Tenebaums (spelling?) and on the opposite end I thought Lost in Translation was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

The Life Aquatic was fucking hilarious. That was actually one of his best movies, along with Rushmore and the aformentioned Royal Tenenbaums. The only movie of his I really didn't like is Stripes. No matter how much I give it a chance, I don't find it funny.

Though I don't think anyone would argue against Caddyshack being his absolute best.

The only movie i had a problem with Bill in some parts was "Broken Flowers". But that was still a good movie, just the end pissed me off.
