I did a stupid thing

Post by Dregor Thule »

Was installing 3.3 of Bit Torrent (which I already had as it turns out) and I foolishly left the box marked install web search whatever. This installed a highly intrusive search program that infiltrated my IE. At first it showed up as a gray bar at the bottom, added a bunch of desktop and favorites links, and changed my homepage. Stopped that nonsense. Then it showed up as a search bar at the top of my browser a-la google bar. Turned it off by right-clicking the menu's at the top and finding a "qyyutrqueeg" checked. Unchecked, it's gone. But now my IE is acting bizarre.

I try and click on links and posts, and IE just freezes up on me. I've tried to find somewhere in IE where there's installed components or something, but nada. Any ideas?

It's probably something you will have to remove by editing the regestry. However if you don't know what it was called that could be a big problem. If that's the case you can go to the System Information tool from Accessorys/Systems Tools then view system history and check the software changes on the date it happened. From there you might get enough info to remove from the registry.

The other option would be to throw in your XP disk and do a repair install. Not too bad if you have a fast connect for the updates afterwards. If you haven't formatted in a while this might be a good time to do that...

I always forget about that.

But it's a nice feature. Saved me numerous reinstalls when I was trying to get SP1 working.
