Modest mouse is pretty "other"... my friend has a huge amount of music which I'd file under "other", hes beyond the whole rock age and I guess the last fronteir is the other section... I hate 90% of what he sends me... then again, its not as bad as the cookie cutter stuff you hear from every single punk / emo group.

Jonathan Fire*Eater
Mouse on Mars
The Make Up
Unwound
Bruce Haack (early 1950's electronica...strange, strange, STRANGE)
Shoukichi Kina (1960's-70's Japanese surf/go-go rock...strange)
Arab Strap
Smog
Junray
Clinic
Múm (look for the accent over the u...there is another band without it that is crappy)
Early Day Miners
Lambchop
Sebadoh (pre-Harmacy)
Can

My Bloody Valentine - 'Loveless'
One of the best, most influential noise rock albums of all time. Layers upon layers of sound/noise. You can listen to it hundreds of times and still not hear everything that's there.

Slowdive - 'Souvlaki' or 'Just for a Day'
Layers of sound, great melodies and vocals. Hard to describe (like anything on this list is, really), but great. Falls into the "shoegazer" category.

Monster Movie - 'Last Night Something Happened' or 'Monster Movie EP'
One ex-member of Slowdive is in Monster Movie; still falls into the "shoegazer" category, but it's a bit less art/noise than Slowdive.

Flying Saucer Attack - 'Flying Saucer Attack' or 'Further'
One of the first noise/art rock bands, good stuff.

Cocteau Twins - 'Heaven or Las Vegas'
Credited as being the ones to start the whole shoegazing movement. Most bands that fall into that category have derived at least some of their sound from the Cocteau Twins. Not exactly for everyone.

Mogwai - 'Rock Action' or 'Happy Songs for Happy People'
I saw that 'Young Team' was recommended earlier, and while that does fall more into the 'noise rock' category than these two albums, their later work is really better, in my opinion.

Pia Fraus - 'Plastilina EP'
Poppy noise rock.

Windy and Carl - 'Antarctica'
Lots of delay/reverb/feedback.

Appleseed Cast - 'Low Level Owl Vol 1' or Vol 2
Some catchy pop songs with noise, and some long instrumental songs.

Bardo Pond - 'On the Ellipse'
Falls into the category of "drone rock;" also noise/art rock.

Sigur Ros - 'Agaetis Byrjun' or '()'
A bit more commercial/well known than the other stuff on this list, so you've probably heard of them, but if you haven't, you should really give them a try. It's some of the most beautiful, expressive, emotional music I've ever heard.

Wow, yeah - I totally forgot to mention MBV. I guess I just sorta take for granted how well known that album is around here where I live. That's a great one!

Sigur Rós is nice, too.

If you start to lean more towards the shoegaze stuff, I might suggest Swirlies or Stone Roses.

Others worth mentioning (and where to get them):

Dianogah - "As Seen From Above" (Ohio Gold)
- two basses, an awesome drummer, not much in the way of vocals, and all goodness...

Rhythm of Black Lines - "Set a Summery Table" (Six Gun Lover)
- Instrumental, proggy jazz rock from Austin. Their earlier stuff sounded sorta like the Police, but this is mixed a bit different. Reminds me more of the Tortoise/Mercury Program sort of stuff you mentioned. Sad thing is, I've heard that since this album, they've taken this angle to an unfortunate extreme.

Lowercase - "The Going Away Present" (Kill Rock Stars)
- Teenage proteges of Unwound who have all but perfected the minimalist noise of Unwound and Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth. A bit slower, and only a 2 piece band. Sorta like a slightly heavier Blonde Redhead with male vocals.

"Shoegaze" was a sort of subgenre that started in late 1980's UK. It was initially groups like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Stone Roses, and the like, and later it spread to Catherine Wheel, Ride, and Charlatans. In the 1990's, it was sort of mutated and carried on in a less-noisy, more structured form by spacey bands like Bowery Electric, Yo La Tengo, Swirlies, and Drop Nineteens. The US shoegaze scene of the 1990's was centered mostly around Boston. Eventually, in the late 1990's/early 2000's, some of the volume came back, and modern day equivalents include Mogwai and Bardo Pond, who are mentioned above.

The original sound was characterized by layer upon layer of distorted, frequently effects-laden guitar noise, that together would create dense, textural songs.

The term "shoegaze" was, as are so many other musical genre names, originally a derisive comment made by a critic - in this case noting these bands' tendencies to stare at their shoes while playing and miss out on having any sort of real stage presence.

its kind of hard to explain but its def not mainstream in anyway

and due to our varied influences will mature into some really crazy shit as time goes by

Can only agree on some of the suggestions here.
If you happend to like Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine ( as per Etasi's post) there are some cloose stuff to check up on.
Spaceman 3 , Dreamweapon.
Suecide anything realy.
Seamonster, Ladies and Gentlemen you my unfasten your seatbelts.
Galaxy 500.
Also a band from Gainsville called Rein Sanction made some realy nice stuff in that area.
Dont forgett to check Velvet Underground out to if you like " noice ".
If you liked Lambchop find some Thindersticks.
Also worth mentioning here is Miles Davis Bitches Brew album.
More of the "dirty" guitarrs can make a lot of sounds stuff include Mudhoney ( flat out fucked a classic!) they sort of reacted on the mentioned UK showgaze stuff , Tad also worth checking out.

When it comes to free form Jazz the main place is Japan and Germany now a days.
Hans Peter Brötzmann's mashinegun is vital as the rest he done.
Alos check out the " project " Naked City with leading jazz muscians like John Zorn and Bill Laswell joining up with Napalm Death drummer Mitch Harris to make stuff you never heard before, check album Torture Garden out.

If you whant to here some realy wild electro based noice jazz Tokata Musuri is the name.
Also mentioned elswhere is Faust add the Residents to that if you happen to find a video somewhere let me know ).

Can also plug my friends little record label Häpna at http://www.hapna.com .
Samples to listen to there, can recomend Toshiyas field recordings ( album sold out sadly) and Tape who are one of the few bands I know that makes dron music. Not just because they are my freinds or so but that place is good to check out if your intrested in " other " types of music, 2 new releases comming up.

An other important band in Sweden at lest is Lokomotiv Konkret, a free form band formed in the early 70 is, might be verry hard to find anything about them but if you do your in for some real layer on layer packing. For thoose following the art scene in Sweden ( think it was news elswhere to ) leader of the band is same person who made the artwork that the Israeli ambasador in sweden tried to destroy a while ago.

Other names to check for includes Marcus Krazmann, John Cage, Jim O'rourke ( with and without Sonic Youth), Mats Gustavsson, Eugene Chadbourn ( the true US singer/song writer one of the latest albums is Dont burn the flagg burn Bush, he also only makes one copy of his albums mostly and encourage copying and spreading it).

If you find something intresting but cant get more and I can help let me know, Im no stranger to doing something illegal ( fnord).
