If you're in Greece and are caught playing a video game you can.

Voronwë... When you don't know what you are talking about, you really should shut up. Greece a borderline third wolrd country? On what is based your assessment? The McDonalds per capita? Or the fact you are totally ignorant about it, but that since it's an European country you feel it's right to say it?
my off the cuff comment is based on the fact that the government is quite possibly the most corrupt on that continent.
things like the government not enforcing the trafficking of women into forced prostitution also contributed.
now that kind of shit goes on in Yugoslavia, Russia, and other places so maybe Greece should get a seat at the "second world" table, upon further review.
regardless, it was a bullshit comment on a bullshit messageboard, don't let it get under your skin

Estro, here is what the state department has to say about that lovely country:
Plus it's surrounded by wonderfully civilized lands such as Bosnia, Serbia, Albania (Ethnic cleansing, anyone). I think "borderline 3rd world nation" is putting it nicely.... a gateway to Europe for traffickers smuggling cannabis and heroin from the Middle East and Southwest Asia to the West and precursor chemicals to the East...

Yeah, that's why they are banning games. They are trying to cut down on illegal gambling to help their olympic bid.Might not be a "rich" country by any means, but still its about to get the Olympics in 2004 is it?
I think I'd focus on the drug trafficing first!

Well, things change, and they will obviously have to refine this law before the Olympics come around. can you imagine a whole olympics worth of americans without their cell phones ? I sure as hell know that wouldn't work.
this just goes to show that some countries are so far behind in their electronic and computer laws that it is almost sad. How about this for an idea, set up your computer laws, to forbid electronic gambling if thats what you want.. and then.. now I know this is far-fetched. But you set up a fucking computer taskforce in your government to regulate that kind of shit like nearly every other country that is fairly up to date on technology.
it's sad to see this kind of ignorant shit coming from a government as a whole.

I think most everyone can agree that Greece is well known for their organized crime. Everyone can also agree that when you outlaw something, someone else gets really rich off it. Everyone remembers the lessons of Prohibition in America right? Obviously Greece is still stuck in the 1930's(or was it 20's heh can't remember).

Greece has a mixed capitalist economy with the public sector accounting for about half of GDP. Tourism is a key industry, providing a large portion of GDP and foreign exchange earnings. Greece is a major beneficiary of EU aid, equal to about 4% of GDP. The economy has improved steadily over the last few years, as the government has tightened policy in the run-up to Greece's entry into the EU's Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) on 1 January 2001. In particular, Greece has cut its budget deficit to below 1% of GDP and tightened monetary policy, with the result that inflation fell from 20% in 1990 to 3.1% in 2000. Major challenges remaining include the reduction of unemployment and further restructuring of the economy, including the privatization of some leading state enterprises. Growth, 3.8% in 2000, may fall off to 3%-3.5% in 2001. GDP - per capita is $17,200 however the real issue is lack of industrialization and the heavy reliance on tourism and the resulting service industry making up over half of the GDP. The 11.3% unemployment rate is fairly dismal.
However lets speak of third world in terms we can all recognize. With a population of 10,623,835 people Greeze has 27 Internet Service Providers and 1.33 Million net users. The USA has a population of 278,058,881 with 7800 ISP's and 148Million Net users. Once we subtract the 14 million idiots that use AOL, that leaves 7799 ISPs and 134Mill net users. Therefore
Person per ISP %of NetUsers
Greece......393k...............12.5%
US..............17k................48.2%
Therefore Greece as a country compared to the US as netjunkies is in FACT a third world nation.

Probably intellectual capacity. The average greek is about as smart as an olive tree. I'm actually surprised that they still don't worship Zeus. Their government makes Italy's look like Mary Poppins. This is only more evidence.Estrosiath wrote:Voronwë... When you don't know what you are talking about, you really should shut up. Greece a borderline third wolrd country? kylere you should quote your source material (cia world factbook) instead of trying to pass it off as your own information. Someone might accidentally come to the conclusion that you didn't drop out in grade 9 to work at your stepdad's quickie oil change.
Actually Kookan, since the CIA Factbook had already been misidentified as state department info earlier in the thread I skipped citing source. The fact of net usage was derived from numbers they provide, then compared to show differences.
Of course the fact that you want to see my source rather than argue that I am an idiot and entirely wrong as usual for you just goes to prove that Voronwe and I are correct about Greece being a third world nation.

Not that I really care one way or the other about Greece, it's involvement with the 2004 Olympics shouldn't be used as a point in it's defense. There was talk as recently as about 2 months ago that it might lose the Olympics due to construction delays, poor organization, devastating environmental impact, and work stoppages from labor unions that sited unsafe and overly harsh working conditions that resulted in the deaths of several workers.Leelee wrote:Might not be a "rich" country by any means, but still its about to get the Olympics in 2004 is it? Dont think Ethiopia has put a bid in yet
A 30 second search yielded this: "IOC officials have said they will not move the Games but have pressed Athens to speed up preparations. In April 2000, IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch publicly blistered Athens' performance as the worst he had seen in 20 years at the helm of the Olympic movement."

I dont know ... when I think about the people I know or have met that are first or second generation Greek-American/Canadian, the one common trait that immediately comes to mind is how pig-headed, stubborn, and hard to sway they can be. If what is true for my limited sample set is true for an entire nation, it's not hard to imagine why they might have a hard time getting things done.
There is a certain irony in calling them a 3rd world nation (and I fully understand the spirit of these claims
). Greece was the birthplace of many of the great ideas in a variety of arts and sciences, including architecture, philosophy, art, and engineering. They even had the first of the great world conquerors (well, he was from that area, anyway). Indeed, in their day, they were the "1st world", and then some.
They eventually declined, though I forget exactly the factors involved - perhaps they got too many good idea men, and spent more time arguing than doing. The Roman empire eventually grew, and it became an even greater nation, fueled in part by the ideas and the idea men from Greece.
Getting back on topic, I find this law truly amazing, and I wonder what will happen when they are beseiged by foreigners in 2004. Will they actually prosecute athletes if they have a gameboy? What about the people with palm pilots, do they go to jail for playing reversi while waiting for a bus? And dont forget, every system running Windows, by default, has a few games installed - what is the fate of every newspaper beat writer with a laptop?
Truly, not the best idea to come from this nation.
