... If so, what do you listen to? Here is my partial list:
Lagwagon
AFI
Snapcase
Boy Sets Fire
Death By Stereo
The Vandals
Dead Kennedys
Alkaline Trio
NOFX
Social Unrest
Good Riddance
Sick of it All
Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies
Black Flag
There is more, but I can't remember, heh. Also, some of those groups are in the hardcore genre, but punk/harcore is a good mix anyway
Try some of the new stuff coming from the Bay Area , My personal Fav right now is Spitshine Syndicate http://www.spitshinesyndicate.com . Lots more small undiscovered talent out here. Just browse around and check it out
Boy Sets Fire is definately the shit! I just bought my ticket for the Boy Sets Fire/Snapcase show for Oct 5 in Hollywood. I can't wait!!! Also, I have some great pics from the Warped Tour in Ventura that I went to in July. Most notable are a pic of my friend with Fat Mike, Death By Stereo, Lagwagon and this trio of hotties I will try to get those up next week when I have a chance!
I listen to an older band called X, but I'm not sure if they are considered punk or not. They sang songs called Blue Spark, Los Angeles and hungry Wolf.
Momopi Down warder of PD
Naala Momokitty Raid Assassin of PD Meow Meow
Naala the Breeder in Ted Club
I used to be really into punk but I've broadened my musical tastes a bit (they used to be really broad, I narrowed them, now broad again omg)
Punk and 'emo' (god I hate that word) seem to get grouped a lot, so I'll list both. Been drifting more towards pop-punk/etc, and geek rock.. Pinkerton.
The Ataris (used to be really into them, not nearly as much anymore)
Blink-182(before you lynch me, Dude Ranch is good)
Jimmy Eat World (emo, rock? huh? I dunno, Clarity is *such* a good cd)
Something Corporate
Finch
Weezer!
Starting to dislike New Found Glory, ew.
The Get Up Kids
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes own..
NOFX is always good.
Alkaline Trio
Mest is good.
Yellowcard!
You were at Warped in Ventura Canelek??? So was I! I was a bit dissappointed by this years show though. Bad Religion and NOFX are two awesome bands but I don't think that they really played their best sets that night. IMO the two best performances were Reel Big Fish and Flogging Molly. I was pretty psyched cuz I was front and center for Reel Big Fish. Here are my punk recommendations:
The Sex Pistols
The Ramones
The Clash
Dead Kennedys
The Stooges
NOFX
Bad Religion
Rancid
X-Ray Spex
Flipper
Bad Brains
And for all of you ska fans out there, here are my recommendations:
Less Than Jake
The Aquabats
Skankin Pickle
Bruce Lee Band
The Blue Meanies
Madness
The Specials
The Selecter
Bad Manners
Reel Big Fish
Buck O Nine
Mad Caddies
The Skatalites
Desmond Dekker
Operation Ivy
Mephiskapheles
Mustard Plug
Lets Go Bowling
The Toasters
New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble
The Scofflaws
Voodoo Glow Skulls
A list of bands I saw BEFORE 1983..sometimes it's good to be a geezer!
Dead Kennedys,The Clash,Misfits,Ramones,DoA,MDC,The Dickies,The Jam,The Buzzcocks,The Craamps,FU's,Mission of Burma,Black Flag,Gang of Four,Flipper,Agent Orange...just off the top of my head.
After 1983...The Pixies,Big Black,Motorhead,Gwar(hehehe)...cant remember the rest,my mind is a bit fuzzy...heh
The best shows out of that group in no order...The Pixies at The Rat in Boston..1990 stood next to Black Francis's mom, she was wearing a nice sweater and skirt very tradional "Momish"..she said Charles(francis) was always a quiet boy she was surprized but proud of him....Dead Kennedys in a club called 9 lansdowne in August no a/c 125 degrees and I was hanging from the rafters to see!..DoA at the YMCA...there were school desks and tables in the room, people were jumping off them and started to throw the desks around.
Please remember The Sex Pistols were a creation of Malcom Mclaren. He got the idea from hanging out with the NY dolls and Iggy. They were a great band but by no means original. The Ramones first album came out in 1975!..2 years before the Sex Pistols. So please don't discount the Ramones they were there from the beginning, right in the middle of the CBGB's scene which was the real birth place of punk rock from lets 74-77.
Oh..and if you want a great book about where it all started..."Please Kill Me:The Uncensored Oral History of Punk" by Legs McNeil is an excellent read.
Well, I was an art major in Providence in the early 80's. I always loved punk, though the New Wave scene was coming on strong then, which was cool, too.
BTW, you old timers, how shocked are you all that they are using "London Calling" now to sell Jaguars, of all things. You'd never know this was the same band that demanded their label sell "Sandinista" for the same price as a single album when it was released.
Bigno, remember 'Berlin Airlift'?
Ogbar - a member of the Tiger's Roar retirement community
I remember them ogbar...cant remember their music all that well though...I was not really into them...however they were one of those bands that always seemed to be playing someplace in Boston(they were al local product after all) in the early- mid 80's. Seemed like every other time you would go out to the local club just to hang out, there they were!
as to the "London Calling" being a Jaguar sales pitch song, very sad...but there must be some sort of irony(I hope) in using a song about the end of the world to sell 50k+ auto...or probably Joe strummer and Mick Jones are just broke..heeh
I always play with either punk, ska, emo, hard core etc.. playing on winamp.
I don`t use eq sounds anymore since they suck.
Bands i like :
Sick of change
Thrice
Strung Out
No use for a name
Bad Religion
Yellowcard
Boy sets fire
choke
jimmy eat world
Saves the day
Unwritten law
Raised Fist
And many more..
I'm kinda open minded about music and listen to OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of other alternative/hip hop and Quebec french music can be good sometimes... when i get in a car or put on the radio..
There is a kick ass quebec punk/folk french band that has some nice french lyrics going called Les Freres a cheval. They got some nice songs
You pretty well nailed it, Bigno. They did play everywhere (including the Living Room in Providence - OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS), and they were, well, a local band - nothing really great. My then girlfriend (now wife) really liked them, though, and she even did some free graphics design work for them when she was still in college.
Heh, are Mick and Joe even talking to each other these days - I lose track.
Ogbar - a member of the Tiger's Roar retirement community
me first and the gimmie gimmies... um.. no.. any band that tries to turn good clasic songs and turns them into some dude with a not so good voice yelling them.. just my opinion though..
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes get bonus points for having a really cool band name though.
My ska/punk list:
Bad Religion
NOFX
The Ramones
Fenix TX
Dropkick Murpheys
Flogging Molly
Saves the Day
Jettingham
Less Than Jake
Reel Big Fish
Weezer
Fugazi
The Vanilla Village Villains
Dead Milkmen
Dead Kennedys
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. =D
"Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings." - John F Kennedy
Fuckin Murr is an emo piece of crap. Ohh I cant wait to waterbaloon you while you're walking around. ^_^
JK, but that is shit I do to emo kids. Also toilet paper their houses, and well, I've beat the crap out of two of them recently. They are so damn smartassish, yet they can't back any of it up. Even when I get them in wits they always say something like "you may be better than me, but guess what you're NOT COOL." I swear to god, I hate being called "cool," or "not cool," because it's just so demeaning either way. >_< I H8 EMO KIDS >_<
First post, but I'm a huge punk and hardcore fan (as well as some emo)... had to list some.
Hot Water Music
Gorilla Biscuits
Shai Hulud
Strongarm
Cave-In
Minor Threat / Fugazi
Coalesce
Funeral Oration
Leatherface
As far as Indie stuff goes:
Braid, No Knife (can you call them emo), Ampline, The Anniversary, Jets to Brazil, Knapsack, The Jealous Sound
Murr is right about earlier Jimmy Eat World stuff being really good (ie. Static Prevails/Clarity stuff), but after one listen of the latest album I am too ashamed to even use it as a coaster.
Hmm..... I'm always late to these things these days....
Let's see. I don't listen to *too* much punk these days, opting for more indie stuff, but I grew up on punk. Here's my list:
Iggy and the Stooges (my first concert)
Stiv Bators and the Dead Boys
Ramones
Descendents (hell yes, gaklek....All? NO!! ALL!!!!)
Dead Milkmen
Social D.
Husker Du
Minutemen
Buzzcocks (was pissed when "What do I get?" was in a car commercial)
Clash (Clash selling out in commercials is nothing new)
Fugazi
Jawbox
Autoclave
Bratmobile
Superchunk (**old** Superchunk)
Mission of Burma
Pixies
Boss Hog
Joy Division (fucking JOY DIVISION, people! come ON!!)
The Jam (though they're more mod)
EDIT---- oh yeah, the Cramps, Suicide, and Crucifucks, too. Jon Spencer and his Blues Explosion would be nowhere without Lux Interior paving his way.
Hawking - 80 Necromancer, AOC Mannannan server, TELoE
Also currently enjoying Left 4 Dead on XBL.
Yep saw the Cramps a few times..best show was a double bill with The Ramones on New Years eve way back when 1985...mabye..That was when he did the balloon trick, hell it was New Years eve, there were balloons around so..
Searyx does get it right as far as Punk rock goes though,However we are very self aware..Cant say that about the latter day Hip hop/Rap/R+B crowd.. a more clueless bunch of dip-shits never has existed in the music industry. They need to lighten up a bit, when rap first started it was pretty fun. Now it's all tough and serious AND ultra corporate BS. Compare it to the state Rock was in in the Late 70's early 80's kind of like Journey,Reo-Speedwagon,Styx..etc..but once again at least the afore mentioned didnt take themselves TOO seriously.
