Last Samurai
Who is going to see this today? I was hoping to go this afternoon but I am playing Daddy Daycare so I'll have to wait until tonight.

This movie is exceptionally well done. I also don't want to spoil anything for anyone.
The fight scenes are nothing short of incredible. Cruise's use of the katana was extremely impressive. A very good and interesting story, great acting. The lead samurai should probably get best supporting actor.
I'll wait a few weeks to talk about the one minor thing that sat wrong with me.

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Of myself and 2 friends, I'm the only 1 that thought it was excellent. I think it's because they're slightly younger and can't go more than 2 minutes w/out mass carnage on the screen /shrug. Some overacting by certain people, but it's forgiveable.
Watanabe (I think that's the Daimyo's name) was excellent. My eyes actually kinda welled up in a few places involving his character, especially later in the movie.

had some flaws, but had some excellent parts.
***Semi spoiler but not much!***
I thought the movie was very average. I didn't feel much for the characters and tired of everyone wanting to kill themselves anytime something went wrong. I can't blame the movie for the lack of feeling as the japanese culture doesn't do well on the screen except for the occasional outbursts when someone wants to kill themselves over honor. There was a lot more attention grabbing dialog in Braveheart, Gladiator and even Dances with Wolves...comparing it to other historical movies.
What bothered me most were the battle scenes. They were lame compared to something like Braveheart or Gladiator. I wasn't looking for the same type of battle as the fighting style varies but the dialog was weak as well. I thought the final scene with everyone getting mowed down was very mediocre.
Honestly, I thought Shogun was much more entertaining to watch and that was a TV series. The only thing similar being the japanese culture and even that being a few hundred years apart. Cruise didn't do enough during his time in the Samurai village to make me bond with the people. The one meal that they joked around in wasn't enough. This lead to me not caring much when the Teacher's son dies in a dramatic fashion with every single arrow he fires near death being right on target. It also doesn't take 20 bullets to take down a samurai. They're flesh and blood like anyone else damnit!
I don't want to knock the movie too much but it certainly doesn't stand out to me as anything on par with movie of the year candidates. Maybe it's a bad year for films.
