I believe that many state laws refer to these offenses differently. This notion prevents (minor) cases of statutory rape from being covered by pedophilia laws. It would seriously suck if as an 18 yr old who slept with a 16yr old the parents could get so pissed off as to have pedophilia charges brought against you and ruin your entire life

I, personally, appreciate the distinction because at the age of 15 I had an 18 year old girlfriend. I would not label that girl as a pedophile by any stretch.

Well.. what you might find is that the age of consent varies depending on the parties involved. For instance, in the liberated state of Minnesota it's perfectly legal for a girl of 13 to engage in sex with a person not more than 48 months older than her, which is a general exception to the age of consent of 16.

So, 13 and 17 is AOK. However, 15 and 20 would be jail time. And 16 and 40 would be AOK too! Ain't life funny.
