Since my folks have mostly been in Thailand for the last 4 years or so, I have spent Thankgiving with friends. Usually, I roast or rotisserre a ~8lb standing rib roast and someone else does the turkey. This year, it will be with my brother and his wife so I will do a rib roast again! :D :D

Sides:

Garlic Mashed taters
Cranberry sauce
Green Bean bundles (I can provide this recipe if anyone wants it, it is yum!)
Sweet Potato pie or casserole
Crescent Rolls
A good Cabernet (Sterling is the bomb)
en kærlighed småkager

Thanksgiving usually varies since my immediate family is huge (7 siblings, most married) and everyone tries to contribute but these are the usuals:

Turkey (have tried cooking it every which way)
Lechon (roast pork)
Apple sausage stuffing (my favorite)
Rosemary/garlic smashed potatoes
Arroz con frijoles (rice and beans)
Seven bean salad
Platanos maduros (fried plantains)
Corn on the cob
some sort of cranberry dish (my least favorite)
some sort of bread
Pumpkin pie
Pecan pie
Tres Leche or Flan

We're Cuban/English... I'm in CA now but I'm originally from Miami and my family is still there.

Fried Turkeys are teh bomb!

Veggie platter, Cheeses and salamis and crackers, lots of olives to stick on your fingers! (a kid favorite)

Turkey and stuffing
Ham with pineapple rings and whole cloves
Py's Garlic Mashed potatoes (cause they are better than my mom's)
Corn
Green beans
Garlic rolls
Gravy
Cranberrie something to look at but not eat.

Pumpkin Pie and whipped cream.

So Cal and what most Thanksgiving meals were like growing up.

EDIT: Cane, would like the recipe for the green been bundles.

omg you people make me hungry, please post recipes!

My family adopted Thanksgiving since we don't have this holiday in Poland, but good food is always welcome no matter what day it is

Usually what we eat is traditional Roasted turkey, cranberry sauce and/or jelly, stuffing out of a box with addition of wild mushrooms, regular mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes with amaretto liquor, salad.

This year I'm cooking again and I feel like doing something new, I got the whole month to try new recipes before making an official Turkey day menu.

-garlic mashed potatoes sound great( is that just roasted garlic mashed with regular potatoes?)
-green bean bundles sounds intriguing!
-friend platanos, these are the small bananas right? I had these once I think and they were OMG good!
-apple sausage stuffing sounds good

I usually eat Thanksgiving at my Mom's/Uncle's/Grandparent's house. (We have a large family and they rotate holidays yearly). This year both Xmas and Thanksgiving are at my Mom's - Woohoo!!!

Thanksgiving at Mom's:
Roasted Turkey
Mashed Potatoes
Gravy (dark gravy, not that light whitish stuff)
Stuffing - fairly basic, but its homemade
Green Beans (not the canned kind)
Corn
Rolls
Cranberry Sauce and Cranberry Jelly
(varied extras depending on what relatives bring)
***
Pumpkin Pie
Mincemeat Pie (grandpa likes it - I find it quite icky!)
Pecan Pie

Pretty basic Turkey-Day in Oregon.

Oh - P.S. - I've never made a turkey myself =/ One of these days I am going to give it a try. Giant poultry cooking scares me!

Some sort of warm, crusty bread

Dessert-

We had turkey day out our place last year, pretty standard stuff but tasty nonetheless.

May sound odd, but we always start w/ shrimp cocktail in spicy cocktail sauce
Turkey cooked w/ the stuffing inside and wrapped in bacon. The bacon isn't for eating, it's just an old trick my mother in law uses to keep it juicy
Rib roast preferred but usually get a pre-sliced ham on bone because it's easier
Yams with brown sugar and marshmallows. It's friggen dessert it's so good
Corn on the cob
Polenta with a tomato-based sauce
A couple of roasted halibuts for our fish-only friends
spaghetti squash marinara as a side for the same couple (everything including the potatoes uses a meat-based sauce)
Rice pudding
Apple pie
Pumpkin pie
Rolaids

Green Bean Bundles

2 Cans whole green beans, drained
Catalina Salad Dressing
Bacon

Make small piles of the beans lengthwise (7-10 beans)
Wrap bacon strip around beans to make bundle, cut off excess bacon(only needs to go around about 1.5 times.

Arrange bundles in casserole dish in single layer

Pour Catalina dressing over bundles to coat (don't drown them!!) About 1 regular bottle should do trick

Back at 350 for ~20 minutes or until bacon is cooked and dressing is reduced and bubbly.

Great side dish!! :D

thanksgiving is wine day

eco domani is my current favorite, but i love to cruise by trader joe's and buy a couple of new reds to share with my dad

sirensa - roasting a turkey in the oven is pretty easy nowadays, you should really try! if i can manage without fucking it up, ANYONE can. cleaning them out sucks, but i'm a wuss. you can buy a turkey with the meat thermometer already poked in him, all you have to do it turn the oven on and watch for it to pop up.

that bacon wrapping thing sounds so kick ass.

ecco domani = bleh

I know that it is only like 15 bucks, but if you really want do better go with a Sterling merlot (I take it you are going with ED merlot). That retails for about 25-30 and is exponentially better. For a cabernet go with Robert Mondavi (not Woodbridge) or Silverado (rare, but the win). Those are again priced in the same 20-30 range. Zinfandel (red not white) go with Ravenswood, it is cheap and excellent.

hey, what's a good sangiovese? i've only tried it in the eco domani.

where do you buy your wines? i've tried probably 15+ weird reds (mainly merlots) that i couldn't name for you from trader joe's. dunno if they sell sterling merlot there, but probably not! i'll try that for 'get lit with dad day' this year.

(sorry to derail)

Here is a tip when making Pumpkin Pie from canned pumpkin.

Read closely the size of the crust it wants.

I bought 2 cans with 2 cans of milk and a 2-pack of crusts, only to find out that each can wants a DEEP DISH crust (so we basically needed to throw out the rest of the mix since I wasn't about to go out to the store again at 1 in the morning.
