Razors

Post by Chidoro »

Just curious, since schick seems to have halted production of my tracer fx razor, I've been on the market for a new one. It's not surprising that the halting of tracer fx distribution is occuring around the same time they're pushing their new quattro razor with huge discounts. It does provide a great shave, far closer than my old one w/out any nicks whatsoever (and I even have to shave down my neck being the hairy bastard I am). However, the price of the replacements are very expensive once the promotion ends. Gillette sent me a Mach3 turbo (ooorah!) probably because the supermarket sells their marketing results from those stupid discount cards and knew I was in the market for one. It's a pretty decent razor as well save for the lube strip that makes me feel like I dipped my face in olive oil once I'm done. I still don't have any idea what the replacement blades cost for that one so I'll hold onto it in until I get a chance to check.

Is there anything else out there that people like that has a reasonable replacement cartridge price? It costs nearly $20 for 8 quattro replacements where I was paying nearly half (~$11) of that with my previous razor.

I use the mach 3. I'm not too particular when it comes to razors and it seems to get the job done. I shave my face and my head with it. Cost of cartriges is about $8 for packet of 4.

I've used the Mach3 turbo for wuite a while now and never felt greasy after using it. I can't even tell there is anything on the strip. The only bad thing about teh razors though is that you only get that new razor feeling for like 3 shaves and then the razor starts to dull. I have very fine to almost non-existent facial hair so I can still use the razor for a month or so but if you have thick bear hair then it may be too expensive to bother with.

I use a gillette single edge, double sided razor. A blade lasts me a week or so, and costs about $2.00 for 10. I've had the same (~50 year old) "closeness adjustable" handle for 10 years. I can't tell the difference between it and any of the disposables, it's certainly a closer shave than my electric.

They gave razors out for free in WW2 and made money off the refills, and still use the same trick for pretty impressive margins.

Gillette Mach 3 Turbo is a very nice razor, but why not get them for free? ;)

They give out free women's razors too (Venus series).

Mach 3 for face, head, and balls. Duct tape leaves a smell, so clear packing tape for the back.

I got the promotional Mach 3 as well, got a shitload of refills on sale at Sam's Club a while back. Pretty good razor. It gives a decent shave, rinses easilly and doesn't tear my face up.

I used to use a Mach 3, and I used it for a fairly long time. However, the cost of the refills just seems to add up and add up fast. I figured I would end up saving money if I went electric so I spent a decent amount of coin and bought one of those Advantage razors, you know..the one with the Goo. My previous experiences with electrics left me with a razor burn type feeling that lasted a few hours and occasionally bumps to match. This razor, however, leaves me clean cut and I never have that just used an electric feeling. Also, I am in the Military and have never been questioned on my shave. I figure I have saved a good ammount of money off of buying it. Probably one of my better investments..that and a Sonicare toothbrush mmmm clean teeth.

I noticed that too, the free razor is for signing up for their little monthly mailer service.

Maybe I just have to use the m3 turbo consistently this week and see as it seems to be general favorite among most. However. if each cart only really lasts for 3 shaves, that will be a problem for me. I really need to get a good six at a refill price of ~$17 for 8 to consider it over the long haul. I had my last razor for so damn long, the plastic strip w/ the brand name was all peeled back. The thing is just pathetic looking mess seeing it now.

3 shaves? Hrm, I tend to use a M3 catridge for about two weeks (6x week). Is that the recommended use, an estimate, or just a personal comfort level thing?

edit: yes, Sonicare = teh win - never going back to a standard brush.

I mostly use an electric (some high-end Norelco), but I've been very happy with the Mach 3 Turbo for all of my other shaving needs.

Ive noticed the single disposable razers get a closer shave under the chin,left/right side of the neck under the jaw area.

I always use mach 3, but i have single blades just for the extra closeness for the spots it cant get for some reason.Im one of thoese people who if they feel a lil stubble after shaving, it drives them nuts. I cant stand it. Also down on the neckline, if its a small spot you miss or not close enough, it catches on your shirt coller... OMG I RAGE Over it.

Mach 3 user here as well. I used turbo for awhile, accidently bought some normal mach 3 cartridges awhile back, and couldn't tell the difference.
I go thru a new cartridge every 2-3 shaves as well, my hair grows in somewhat thick.

My last razor would give me 5 tops, then it would start to feel like I was pulling the hair out as if they were tied to the back of a car bumper. The Quattro has given me 6 on each of the three i've used. They always cop out on number seven for me. I only used the mach turbo yesterday and today, so I'll see how it performs the remainder of the week. That color strip is supposed to be the indicator to change and it's looking rather questionable whether it will go beyond 3 according to gillette's rule. However, I will take their recommendation to change up with a grain of salt.

I use the Turbo and I just recently purchased the new Braun Synchro... I like using the Turbo occasionally, but for daily shaving the synchro does everything I want it to (cleans itself too!). The cartridges for the Turbo can get pricey, but it all worked out to about the same cost per year Turbo vs Synchro...

I have used Braun electric shavers for about 10 years and swear by them. Razors tear up my face badly, and I get a close comfortable shave with my Braun. The only down side is that the motors tend to die after 18 months or so.

They got me with that too. I think it was my 17th B'day. I was shaving before then, but I was using an electric.

I've been using Mach 3 for the last 10-12 years.

Or did they hook me on the sensor and I switched to Mach3? I forget.

I use a Braun Synchro. Got it last year after Christmas and I love it. I used a Mach 3 before that and I keep one around for catching spots the electric misses sometimes. The electric is less effective for every day shaving, imo. It works best after 2+ days of not shaving. (For me, anyway.)

As a rule, I will go many days without shaving. I currently look somewhat like the avatar to the left (though the hair is much darker now - except for the ever explanding strands of gray, of course), so, I am more in trim mode than shave mode these days.

I have also been known to shave my beard off out of the blue, though, then grow it back a few weeks later - or maybe months later. I guess I don't like being predictable or something. When I do shave, I will use either my 20+ year old Norelco electric (with the shaving head that Santa used to ride on in the commerials from years ago) or what ever bag-o-razors are on sale at BJ's/Sam's Club. I refuse to invest any serious money into shaving, which is why I never use shaving cream either. I will either keep the razor wicked hot (with hot tap water) or, when I am feeling more like a puss, use bar soap.

Hmm, you got me thinking now - I may just shave off the ole beard tonight.

I've actually tried a few different ones now.

First, Electric razors can eat my ass. I have too much facial hair for an electric razor to be able to do anything but cry 'mommy.'

Second, the mach 3 wasn't super effective because it had 3 blades. It was super effective because of the new pivot head thingie. (that's a technical term, look it up) This multi blade bullshit is getting silly...I mean, a FOUR blade razor now? I could see effectiveness of that if you have the Black fucking Forest on your back or chest...and even then...it just let's you shave another 2.5 cm before you clog up the fourth blade over the two or three you might be using.

Third, how you take care of your razor determines how well it works over time and how long it's worth a damn. If you just leave your razor sitting in the shower in a small puddle, the thing will last about 5 days or so before it's completely worthless. I take my mach 3, and shake/pat dry/blow air over the blades to make sure it's dry before storing...I can use it for 2 to 3 weeks (shaving face, chest, and the happy place under my panties in a rotation that gives it daily useage) with happy results.

Fourth, you really do get what you pay for. In a sudden moment of home economical inspiration, I bought a few different disposables...they sucked immensely. Knicks and cuts that you don't even understand how you got...a moisture strip that turns to jelly after one use. And a blade that is dull or rusted after 3 or 4 days.

All that said, my gillete mach 3 has been wonderful and reliable...and like Voro said, if you can go to a wholesale place and buy a damn carton of them...you won't cringe everytime you have to change a blade.

Edit, what shave gel you use makes a lot of difference as well. I used to buy edge pro gel with extra super ultra almighty supreme knick and cut protection. A week or two ago I used some of that after having used Nivea for men for 6 months or so...and I cut the shit out of my torso...much TT.

Random aside...I'm curious to try one of the seriously old fashioned razors...like the straight blade razors the barbers used. Or if you still need help, the one Michael Madsen used in cutting off the cop's ear in Resevoir Dogs. In theory it would work immensely well...but only over the pretty flat parts of your face, and I can't even see it being practical for any sort of bodily shaving.

I travel with my electric shaver, and that must cut the life of them. I usually do a foil and cutter replacement at the one year mark. The motors always seem to lose steam at the 1.5 to 2 year mark for me.

I dry shave as well. Mach 3 Turbo, too. Umm.. I think I've found my next stsock tip on Veeshan Vault=)

HAve shaven the face dry for probably 10 years because my Dad's exact words were:

"Son... only pussies use cream".

Whether he was right or not, it stuck. Thank GOD for the Mach 3. I died for years in the shower trying to suffer through the under-chin stroke.

I do use cream if shaving off the semi-annual Fu-Man-Chu or Goatee...

Dad calls me a "pussy" everytime he sees me clean shaven. God Bless him=)

In a little protest against Gillette's ridiculous price gouging (hi, $10 for a small pack of blades - you know, the kind that used to be 5 blades but now contains 4?), I bought a trimmer. Instead of clean shaving every day or two, I'll trim the bush down and only shave when I feel I need it.

Gillette still gets my money, though...no way I'm using a trimmer for my other shaving needs.

Kilmoll have you tried waxing your back?

For those guys that have never tried wax it last longer and comes in much softer then shaving. :)

Also if your in tight with your hairstylist you can ask her if she shaves back or at least shoulder hair if your not able to take the waxing.

Nothing beats an old-fashioned straight razor for a baby's-ass smooth shave. Seriously...there's nothing like it; it's totally anachronistic. Takes time, though, and when I'm in a hurry, it's Mach 3 to the rescue.
