What assholes are spending $100 billion a year on those bastards and not just hanging up on them? I have never bought anything from a telemarketer, ever. No wonder this is a problem. The telemarketing industry estimates that the do-not-call list could cut its business in half, costing it up to $50 billion in sales each year.

Hello Morons... if they don't want to be called.. guess what.. you probably weren't going to sell them your shit in the first place.
You would think this would be an incredible boon to the telemarketers.... You get a FREE list of people that you don't have to waste time and resources on calling.

I hope it does get overturned. I keep my own list of who calls and who I am talking to when I tell them to remove me from their list of people to call. From now on after October 1, I will have a lawyer contact each organization that calls me after my removal request to inform them of the charges for harrassment. It always helps to record each call you receive from those clowns as well for backing up your claims in court.
Well it's not totally dead yet.Aabidano wrote:It didn't look legal, and wasn't enforceable regardless.
Congrats to all of you who signed up for it, that information will become public soon.
As far as the information goes, it was just your name and phone number. I don't think address was required.House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Billy Tauzin, R-La., and Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., said Wednesday they were confident the ruling would be overturned and believe Congress did give the FTC the necessary authority.
What makes you think it wasn't enforceable?

There would not be a telemarketing industry if it wasn't effective.Sylvus wrote:What assholes are spending $100 billion a year on those bastards and not just hanging up on them? I have never bought anything from a telemarketer, ever. No wonder this is a problem.
It is getting out of control though. I have an unlisted number and I still get 10-12 telemarketing calls a week thanks to random dial sheets. Most of them are from charities I have given to in the past who thank you for your contribution by placing your phone number on a "harrass at least once per day" list.
I'm pretty sure different charities share phone numbers of contributors with each other as well because I realized after the fact that my telemarketing spam from charities at least tripled like a month after I gave to one.
Aye i will never go without caller ID...ever..Vetiria wrote:Caller ID is your friend. Whenever an "Unavailable" call shows up, I just pick up the phone then hang up. I don't even wait to see who it is anymore.
Privacy Manager works extremely well also.. especially if the service that requires a code be entered by the caller to even make your phone ring is available in your area...
as the person who runs an automated dialer for a collections dept the one thing we hate is Privacy Manager.. its about impossible to get past it.
Not the judge's fault. He simply made the decision that the orginization that made the ruling did not have authority to do so. Well, that's Congress' fuck-up, not his. Like they said, they will fix it.

Anyway I just heard the congressman on the TV (playing in the background) discussing it about an hour ago.

if telemarketing is to be allowed, they should have to pay the phone companies money for using their services.
it's like advertising, with no overhead. We're paying for the maintenance of our phonelines in our house...but they call, unsolicited and use our phones more than we do. That just doesn't seem right to me.

What amazes me is that junk faxes were quickly made illegal due to the expense placed on the consumer. Spam remains quasi legal in most places, at a much, much greater expense.
Telemarketing calls remain legal, at much greater net costs to everyone involved.
I will never purchase anything from a telemarketer, or donate to a charitable organization that uses telemarketers. Or purchase any services from a company that calls me telemarketing.
You need my phone number for warranty tracking? OK, it's 999-999-9999.
I saw something on the hit rate required to make it profitable, for tele it was something like 1 in 100, spammers only need 1 in 5000.
That said, I get maybe one or two calls a month on a bad month. Usually none.

I donated to a group because I liked what they were fighting for. At the next election though they sponsored the guy I hated the most. They have called a couple times since that election and I tell them straight up that since they supported that jackass that they will never get any of my money again. They have absolutely no argument and they have stopped pestering me after the second call.
The worst telemarketers in my opinion is my fucking home mortgage company. They keep calling trying to sell me fucking insurance for my fucking refrigerator. The fuckers won't take a hint and call at least twice a week.
In general, I never answer my phone. I have an answering machine and screen everything. Just because you own a phone doesn't mean you have to answer it. Most of the time I don't feel like talking to anyone anyway. I have my name listed backwards in teh phone book so if they ask for Mr. Robert, then I know right away it was the phone company selling my shit again and I tell them no thanks and hang up.

Not anymore. Phone companies are now offering plans for businesses of a flat rate per month. They don't have to pay per call anymore.valryte wrote:Umm, LD calls are not free. the evil telemarket
I dont need the Federal Gov't to protect me from the evil telemarketing Co's. My Caller ID does...If I dont know it, I dont answer it. And yes many share list.
I opted to go with cable just to keep it on the same bill. That and DSL is completely overpriced here and they don't even have ADSL yet. (can't even imagine the payment on that)masteen wrote:I only got a phone line because I need teh DSL. I don't even have a phone plugged in. My cell is more than enough for everything else.

A hardwired phone line and a non-cordless phone is at the top of my counties hurricane\emergency preparedness list. Right next to drinking water in fact. Living in a coastal are where I do, it would be foolish to go strictly wireless.
A landline is a basic neccesity, no matter where you live in case of emergencies. Cellular service does not provide the same (99.9999% uptime) level of reliability, and won't for a number of years, if ever.
I think it's irresponsible of the wireless providers to tout it as "The only line you need".
