Another fix my pc for VV's post.

Post by Rojer »

Ok, my girlfriend has this gateway computer that she has had for about a year and a half, and now all of a sudden the mouse pointer stopped showing up. She HAD ME installed, and I formated it and installed Win 2k pro, and STILL the mouse pointer doesn't show up. She only has USB ports, no ps2, and I have tried multiple ports, multiple mice, and the keyboard works on the ports that I try for the mouse and it still doesn't work. It detects the mouse, I know this because when I try to boot it without the mouse plugged in then it says no mouse detected, then as soon as I plug the mouse in it says mouse detected continuing boot sequences. So.. smart peoples.. what do you guys think about this one?

The prize is 2k vv's, if your solution works.

What kind of mouse is it? (Brand, Model, Port type (USB/PS2?))

Are you installing the drivers that are specifically for that mouse, or no?
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

I tried the actual gateway mouse, and I tried a microsoft mouse that works on my other pc, and she only has USB, its a gateway. I tried the drivers that are on the win2k cd.

I would recommend using the drivers from the manufacturer. For the gateway mouse, go to their website, and find them there. For the MS, they have a site too... http://www.microsoft.com/hardware. It could also be related to you installing Win2k, but not yet installing the drivers for USB.

Step 1) Delete your everquest characters.
Step 2) Repeat step 1 for good measure.

Heres a question. If you move the mouse around can you see items "highlight" like the mouse was passing over them?

Hit the windows key + pause/break to get into system properties, then using the arrows/Tab key get to the device manager and see if the mouse is even showing up. (being that its USB it might show up as Human Interface Device).

Also you might need to hit MS site to get updated USB drivers (especially if the system has USB 2.0 ports).

This has happend to one of the computers I troubleshooted, As I recall there is an option in the BIOS to resolve this.

It was something like this...

Integrated Peripherals > On chip pci device > usb mouse support via (OS) (BIOS)

Choose BIOS.

Hope this fixes it, it worked for me.

I don't care that you don't believe that I have a girlfriend.. but to say that I would buy a gateway.. now thats just insulting.. In my personal life I would never touch a PC that I didnt make..

Her pc doesn't have that option in the BIOS.. I checked heh it even says Mouse : Present.. but the freaking pointer still doesn't show up.
