Spineless pussies! How low can they go?!

WASHINGTON - A 12-year-old girl in New York who was among the first to be sued by the record industry for sharing music over the Internet is off the hook after her mother agreed Tuesday to pay $2,000 to settle the lawsuit, apologizing and admitting that her daughter's actions violated U.S. copyright laws.

The hurried settlement involving Brianna LaHara, an honors student, was the first announced one day after the Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites) filed 261 such lawsuits across the country. Lawyers for the RIAA said Brianna's mother, Sylvia Torres, contacted them early Tuesday to negotiate.

Lol. These pussies sure like picking targets less likely to be able to defend themselves. College kids, now 12 year old girls.

My favorite:

Sen. Dick Durbin:

"Are you headed to junior high schools to round up the usual suspects?" Durbin asked RIAA President Cary Sherman during a Senate Judiciary hearing.

This is complete bullshit. Though I hate to say this, I must. I read an article or saw an interview with 50 Cent (the rapper). What got my attention is they were asking him about file sharing, interestingly enough he enjoyed it. He said that over 300k people downloaded his cd before release. He sold barely shy of 900k his first week. He actually contributed heavily the success of it to file sharing claiming it spread word of mouth (word of mouf if a rapper). It is obvious most of those 300k people have the cd as of now it has sold nearly 7 million albums since March.

It's funny how the labels are also supposedly dropping their prices for CD's at the same time this is going on. This is supposedly happening because of a class action suit involving them overcharging for CD's in the first place which is why I call bullshit on anything they do. I download once in a while, but I also buy the damned overpriced CD's if I feel they are worth a damn at the same time. It's easier to have CD quality sound in my car than have the crappy 96 that most of the ripping programs now will limit you to.

I miss the good ol' days before MP3.com went public and MP3's were an unknown.

heh I use MP3s to test out what music I like. To me, it basicly works the same way as if I went to the record shop and listened to songs there. I just do it in the comfort of my own home.

Heh, I find that rather funny that they can even go after a 12 year-old. If 12 year-olds are too young to be tried for such things as murder (in many cases) which is pretty easily identifiable as something you shouldn't do, how can they be expected to know about something like copyright law and the implications of digital copyright violations?

It's called parenting. I'm dreading raising a teenager in a few years but I and all other parents out there need to realize that we are responsible for what our children are doing, when, how and with whom. For some weird reason the only time I hear "do you know where your child is/ what he's doing?" is when there's drugs or sexual activity involved.
Maybe we should teach and warn our kids that there are other dangers out there that they need to be aware of and be able to decide how to react. When you decide your kid is old enough to use a computer unsupervised you are still responsible if he/she downloads stuff, surfs porn sites, sets up a nazi website or whatever.

Sorry for sounding like a mom again, but seriously being a parent in today's world is freaking scary.

We are raising our kids like they are products of a fast food assymbly line. We want to blame schools, cops, -ism's, rap, government, and corporations for the crappy way our kids turn out. Just because your kid has a cell phone and a platinum card does not mean you are doing your job either. You've also got to be present. More to it but I've got work to do.
