Zevon faced his illness with a sense of humor. He said, "really, the thing I want is to last through the winter so I don't miss the new James Bond movie." He also resumed smoking.

More than Bob Hope, more than Pope John Paul II and even more than Prez Reagan.
I enjoyed the Letterman special last November where he just sat and spoke with Zevon for an hour. Pretty cool.

Great lyrics. Bummer.
He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor
Werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect
Werewolves of London
Draw blood

Great lyricist, indeed, though I always like him as a performer as well. One of my all time favorite covers is his version of Prince's "Raspberry Beret" (performed with members of REM - aka, the Hindu Love Gods)".

I just got done watching a VH1 documentary that followed him from his diagnosis up through him finishing his album in April. It showed him saying his goodbyes to his friends and family, recording the album... One thing that was pretty cool was they showed him several months back talking to his daughter who was pregnant with twins, and fortunately he held on long enough to hold his newborn grandsons. It was pretty moving, I was crying my goddamn eyes out. I am a big softie though, ymmv.
