Warren Zevon dead at 56 from terminal cancer.
Zevon faced his illness with a sense of humor. He said, "really, the thing I want is to last through the winter so I don't miss the new James Bond movie." He also resumed smoking.

Wonder if he finished the album that he was trying to crank out before he died. The bits I heard live were pretty good.

Heard an interview with him about a year ago, he knew he was terminal and wanted to finish before he died.

He was the Number 1 vote getter at http://www.stiffs.com

More than Bob Hope, more than Pope John Paul II and even more than Prez Reagan.

I enjoyed the Letterman special last November where he just sat and spoke with Zevon for an hour. Pretty cool.

I thought I heard on the radio this morning that he was able to finish his latest album before he died.

Great lyrics. Bummer.

He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor
Werewolves of London

I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect

Great lyricist, indeed, though I always like him as a performer as well. One of my all time favorite covers is his version of Prince's "Raspberry Beret" (performed with members of REM - aka, the Hindu Love Gods)".

Listening to his 2-disc anthology as I write this ...

Zevon really was one of the industry's greats. Even though he never was a super star he always had the respect of his peers and was a true gentleman. It's a shame that he had to die while people like liza minelli and barbara streisand continue to draw oxygen.

I just got done watching a VH1 documentary that followed him from his diagnosis up through him finishing his album in April. It showed him saying his goodbyes to his friends and family, recording the album... One thing that was pretty cool was they showed him several months back talking to his daughter who was pregnant with twins, and fortunately he held on long enough to hold his newborn grandsons. It was pretty moving, I was crying my goddamn eyes out. I am a big softie though, ymmv.
