This is the only game I play atm, and I play all the damn time! If I had the bandwidth, I would run a dedicated server!

Now that I have it installed again, I play it quite a bit. For some reason I'm not really that interested in the new expansion, but I sure as hell can't wait for Vietnam.

Ooooo Vietnam would be damn cool! I have looked at the Desert mod, and it looks sweet too! Anyone use the mod?

Since I am new to this, I have not bothered with the mod yet... Hell, I am trying to get used to flying! :D

Any particular servers yall play on or just random, like me?

Either way, if ya see a 'Canno', that is me!

Pretty random for me.

I hear flying is much much easier with a joystick, but I don't have mine hooked up and won't bother. I just let the pros fly (and camp the plane spawns, those fucking losers) while I blow stuff up on the ground. :) Sometimes I use planes just to get around quicker (paradropping is fun).

On the plane spawn camping bit...it is quite annoying when you're team is about to lose a battle because half your team spent the entire round trying to get their own plane instead of securing flags. Not to mention they must get only half the action everyone else is getting in the game. Sounds real fun.

I tried the Desert Combat mod. It's got lots of cool stuff in it, but I think the choppers are a bit overpowered. This really sucks on the Airport map when you're on the side that doesn't get to start with choppers, and the only cover you have at your spawn point is a couple of tents. Tents don't seem to stop Hellfire rockets very well...

I bought a Saitek Cyborg3 joystick and it is pretty fucking cool. It has been so long since I had bought one that it is alien to me, but it is a huge difference when the settings are correct! I can get around now, but the pro pilots kill me quickly.

One of my favorite things so far is still the tailgunner as you get a kickass view when on board with a good pilot!

As far as mods go, I have high hopes for Forgotten Hope. It's a realism mod that adds more vehicles, weapons, and maps. It shuld be out soon.
Desert Combat was just OK to me. I played an early alpha, and the imbalances were pretty glaring (especially the RPG....people just ran around with that Quake-style)
I just got the expansion today. Judging from the demo, the Natter proves to be the biggest spawn-raping vehicle in the game. Get in that thing when the enemy is down to just one spawn point, and you can rack up kills faster than Wilt Chamberlain could hit it with a diffrent gal.
Being on the receiving end of it sucks. Spawn, die. Spawn, die. Spawn, die.

Exactly what happened to me, resulting in me deleting the fucking mod off my HD. :)

Lately I'm just playing vanilla B1942 and having a blast.

BF1942 just won "new franchise of the year" at some UK games marketing awards thing. And rightly so cos the game pure owns.
It's just so . . . playable!

The intro music is pitch perfect for the game too. It's one of very few intros I watch every time I play the game cos it gets me in the mood for war :)

I got this game the other week, been playing it a fair bit. Sadly now, when I load up, the mouse wont move at all, so I cant do shit and have to alt-tab out and close it.

Anyone had this problem?
It could be that the only purpose for your every existence, is to serve as a warning to others.

I get that problem sometimes. It starts right after I hit the "Internet" button in multiplay. Then, it just hangs. Not very often though.
My impression of the new expansion is not so great. I played it only for 20 min on friday, and the maps I played sucked. Jump in one game, and I am teamed with the british, who are loosing so bad it's not even funny. I got to hop on a motorcycle, and run over two germans that were crossing on foot, which was nice. The second map I played was a night map. It totally sucked. I couldn't see shit. I won't play this one again.

Market Garden is were its at! Nothing like pulling up the halftrack next to the church, and MG42'ing parachuting allies!

Stalingrad is a great map. Some great fights occur trying to hold those building the flags are on top of! A good city fight, without the grenade-spamming fest that Berlin is

My sentiments exactly, I think I played Berlin all of 3 times and said never again. I did LOVE Market Garden, more from the Germans side though I must admit. That was my favorite outdoor level. It was one of the only ones that didnt require flying great distances or getting lost in the middle of a fucking desert.

Also some great ones were Omaha Beach, I loved it from both sides equally. Just great fun, either trying to invade or hold them back. Another one was Midway. I had great fun either sinking the boats or having the battles for the planes.

Market Garden is great when playing as the allies, and you actually have a team playing as a TEAM. Two engineers to mine the main bridge, two more to mine the stone bridge. Reinforce both with anti-tank units, with the rest of the team holding flags, and killing krauts on foot. Great fun!
Tanks get blocked up on the bridge because of the mines...and then here comes Mr Mustang or B-17.....no more tanks!

Oh man, and Omaha. That one is HARD as the allies. Why? Well, mainly is the whole friggin allied team want to be a sniper, and just sit on the fucking shore and snipe, and will never spot for the ship's guns Then there is the obligatory retard who moves the boat, rendering artillery totally useless. The along can the "superman" bug, and the ablility to fly right off the ship, and to the upper flag!
I don't know if you have played lately, but the latest patch has code implemented that will prevent the spawn of vehicles is someone is standing too close. *grooooooaaaan* Supposedly to fix the plane camping problem, but all it takes is for some moron to go afk stand near the spawn point, and well, you get the picture.

EA says it will run on a P3/AMD 500 MHz. Personally I've played it on a 1.2G w/256MB and a crap video card, and it was playable with some chop at low detail...I couldn't snipe very well on that machine tho. I played it on a P600 awhile ago (like when it first came out) - it was really really terrible...don't even bother.

Try the demo and see how it runs :)

I just got Secret Weapons and have only tried it out on a couple maps. So far it's fun, and quite a different experience from the basic game or Rome. My opinions so far on the aspects I've gotten to try out (based on about 2 hours of playing last night):

I haven't run into any goofy jetpack users (except one guy that was a mile away that tried to use it...I sniped him before he got 20 ft up).

The new sniper rifle is easier to use as it doesn't require reloading in between shots. Although I like not having to do it, it doesn't feel right being able to pop off 5 shots in a row with no interruptions in a WW2 game.

The motorcycle w/sidecar seems to spawn EVERYWHERE and is an extremely fast and convenient way to get around on the ground, except you're easy fucking pickings for anyone with a pistol or bigger. :)

The C-47 mobile HQ is pretty cool. It's like the one in the Desert Combat mod, but you don't spawn unattached from the vehicle (I used to fall out of the ass-end of the mobile HQ in DC mod a lot, that sucked) . As a matter of fact, the only way to unattach yourself from the C-47 is to bail.

I really like the anti-aircraft tank. Except for the fact that you have to switch positions to use the guns, it pretty much will tear anything up except another tank.

The missile silo is blah - you fire and guide it (kinda hard but you can kill flying stuff with it I guess), and then you wait around for the missile to respawn. I don't know if your team gets any benefit from you sitting in the little building it's housed in, but it does look like a radar station from the Battle of Britain map.

I haven't used a Sturmtiguer yet (Tiger tank w/mounted naval gun), but whenever I saw one I was normally getting killed by it. Seems pretty nice.

The Sherman w/Callipe missile launcher has been pretty lethal, but I haven't gotten a chance to use it.

Also the manual mentions you can spawn as a British Commando or German Elite soldier with special weapons/items at your disposal. I haven't figured out how this works yet.

The allied Goblin snub-nosed jet fighter is like a flying crotch rocket. Probably good for anti-air though I didn't get a chance to dogfight anyone. Extremely hard to kill anything on the ground.

One thing I definitely don't like is the sounds of the jets. In the original you can tell the whereabouts of most planes because they model the sound/location pretty well (you can tell how close they air and general direction). Most of the time I would hear a jet and have no clue how close it was or even where the hell it was in the sky so I'd be spinning around in circles looking up. It could be my crappy sound card (which is getting upgraded in a few days), but I never seem to have this problem in any other games.

Berlin

Post by Sartori »

Oh yeh Zamtuk...

Berlin is shit. So much potential wasted, and it's the only really urban map. If I want some good urban combat I'd normally load up DoD, but recently after upgrading Nvidia drivers the game will quit to desktop when I connect to a server :(

german elite/british commandos on secret weapons

Post by Sartori »

I dunno if the british commando/german elite is a map-specific or server specific thing with the new expansion. Tonight I played mostly as an engineer, and most of the Secret Weapons maps had me using the regular engineer class. A couple of them had me using the British Commando version equipped with a grenade launcher instead of det-packs (like the Kebler Field night mission).

It varies from map to map. I haven't learned which ones are normal & which are the new ones though.
I love most of the maps in Secret Weapons, barring Kbley Airfield. That map , get out & repair. Then pull back out again, and fire away.sucks. Pennemunde, Gothic Line and Telemark are just golden! Getting into a SturmTiger as an engineer on "Gothic Line", and pound the allied line as they try to advance is fun as hell. If you start taking hits, just pull behind one of the bunkers
The Fallshimjaeger & Bren gun are awesome...great power & godly accuracy.
The german engineers Grenade rifle....bah, give me back the detpack!
The Natter? I love this thing. get in, fly to the nearest enemy spawn point, and just start firing rockets into it. At least one kill, guaranteed.
The rocket pack is killer for sneaking around, taking flags, and just making a general nuisance of yourself.
