If you could erase any one musician/band (but only one!) from music history forever, who would it be?

I've been pondering this one for awhile and still haven't come up with a good answer, though Puff Daddy is high on the list of contenders due to the sheer volume of shitty acts that wouldn't exist if not for him.

Puff Daddy and Babyface are really high on the list, but I think I will have to go with whoever thought up MTV. More than anything else, the video scene has pushed the focus from the music to the image and produced such wonders as Spice Girls and all the various boybands.

Strauss and Wagner get a vote, too...fuck waltz and fuck The Ring.

Hrm tough decision. I don't think erasing one band from history would really change much. However if I had to erase one it would probably be one that I hate - and I don't hate much. Maybe one of the most recent pop icon band things like Ninety Degrees or N'Sync - more than likely. They really possess little talent when it comes to music itself and more talent when it comes to being a good multitasker - dance/fashion/etc...

I am definitely going to have to lean towards the MTV nuke concept. We're force fed the next great "packaged artist" who is really just another no-name hack who happens to have a voice but no talent. I'm tired of the "MTV style" of editing in everything we see. So while I'm not exactly "erasing" a particular artist per se, I still think this is relevant!

Avril Lavigne is really cool. She says what she wants without really going overboard. Plus, she is an awesome singer & songwriter. I had never heard of her before and then I heard sk8er boi. Jam Master J or whatever his name is. Not so much because I have a problem with him in particular, but because my hope would be that if he never came out - rap itself would have never come out.

And that would be a "Good Thing" (tm).

Just a thought. But it seems many of you are trivializing your one chance to reshape music history.

Sure, you could un-make 98 degrees or whatever...but you know they would be instantly replaced with someone else. Try and pinpoint the origin of your particular musical hatred. If it's boybands, it would probably be NKOTB (there may have been one early, I'm not all the knowledgable about boy bands)

Again, getting rid of 50 cent would do nothing. Rap is the market right now...and there would be three replacements just ready to hop in. The idea of Jam Master J was right on, though I don't necessarily agree with it. I probably would try and eliminate when rap turned commercial, and not rap alltogether.

Put some thought into it. Try and make an impact with your choice. (i'm still trying to decide what mine is)

Hmm moments in history to remove, but almost all of them have downsides

1. RunDMC and Aerosmith, but then we would lose the excellent Aerosmith music since then
2. Whoever put the talentless Kid Jock and Crow in the same room
3. Undoing the assassination of Lennon, but unless you could have the bullets hit Yoko, well, we would still have problems
4. Making the Beatles decide to go for it and reunite on SNL like they were minutes from doing
5. Talking Valens and Holly and even the Bopper off that mutherfraking plane
6. Pumping Mojo's stomach in the Amsterdam room
7. Loving Pearl like she needed to be
8. Getting Jimi to slow down the intake
9. Getting Mama Cass into some Jazzercise

I could go on all day

Some things should not be undone, Nirvana would be toast if not for Kurt waxxing himself, Elvis would have been sad instead of dead etc.

eh I dunno about that..my idea of the typical 'boy band' is them not playing their own instruments but just singing like a barbershop quartet..not very well at that...with background music done by whomever artists

I bought the "Best of Sting and the Police" CD a few months ago and saw that P. Douchebag's remake of "Roxanne" was the last cut on the CD. Having never heard it before, I said to myself, "I'll listen to it, how bad can it be?"

I got about 20 seconds into the song when I rolled down my window and smashed the CD on the highway.

The sad thing is the "brothas and sistas" are totally behind this no-talent waste of space.
