Did you install anything or run windows update before this started? And do you have a decent virus scanner?

Try hitting F8 and booting in safe mode. Uninstall anything you've installed. Run a thorough virus scan.

If you have System Restore enabled, roll back to a known working point.

Check out FoH's board. You're not the only one with this problem. Apparently it's some security issue that Microsoft knows about. Also, there are some "fixes" to keep your computer running for now listed there.

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

actually to be able to stay on long enough all you must do is go to control panel -> administrative tools -> services. Then you go to the Remote Procedure Call and click properties, then click the Recovery tab and switch all three to "Restart the Service" rather than "Restart the computer". Then download the latest patch as listed above.

if you're one of the lucky individuals like me who also got infected with the msblaster worm

Nortons info with steps to stop: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... .worm.html

summary is:
enter safe mode, disable system restore, run patch, in regedit delete a value

This will patch the vulnerability and stop the worm, but I'm looking for a free way to clean the files.

It's a nice virus let me tell u. I had it last week. I had to reformat my system yesterday to get things back on track. Kinda pisses me off that some anon user was granted access to my system.

Myself and my GF were also gifted with this wonderful worm last night. I was able to stop my computers from restarting, but I need to install the fix tonight. MsBlaster.exe was my little issue. I couldn't get rid of it. I look forward to trying out your fix when I get home.

What a pain in the ass. Here are some articles that were on the front page of the Drudge Report today.

On symantecs site you can get a file called fixblast.exe that will clean your system, but you still need the patch mentioned above to close the RPC hole in windows to prevent reinfection.
