Magic Online

Post by Avestan »

OK so I admit it. . .I was a closet MTG fan back in the day. Always had fun with it, but I have not played in 5 or 6 years. Anyone tried the online version? My main concern is how much money I am afraid I would have to pour in to get started.

M:TG online?

Post by Sartori »

Hey Stan,

Bleh, nothing to be ashamed of. Especially if you played EQ a ton. :)

I play M:TG quite a bit, but I refuse to pay for the online service. There is no way in hell I will pay cash for virtual copies of the same shit I already own just so I can play with people I can't even see.

Anyways, I play on Magic Workstation. It has all the cards for every set, and an IRC server set up for league play where you can play people from all over the world (damn, lots of brazilians on there later in the evening). If you are interested you can pick it up at http://www.magicworkstation.com
Even though I won't pay for a monthly Magic service, I probably will register this program. It's pretty damn nice.

If you have any questions, IM me.

Hmm that looks cool, it even has a sealed option which is what I was really after. I dont have time to spend hours making decks from an unlimited selection of cards, but it would be fun to play sealed. I will try to download it tonight.

Actually, it has a really nice filter. You filter pretty much anything you want (color, mana cost, card type, set, tournament Types, set blocks, etc).

I'll play anything, but I usually like Type 2.

I still have a shitload of cards in binders in my closet. Nothing older than Dark but a lot of shit after that. I do have a bunch of dual lands though. Sounds like something to look into. Maybe we can get those closet Magic players on VV and form a tourny or something.

I used to play way back in the day. Started around the Ice Age era and quit during the Urza's Saga era. Was just way too much money to keep up with all the expansion sets and to build decent decks, plus I only knew a few people who played. I looked back into it a few months ago, and it was amazing how many new rules, effects on cards, etc, there are now since I played.

I still ahve several thousand cards sitting in my basement. Occasionally I pull out the big library deck for some random fun. Game stopped being fun when you spent hours putting a deck together, played with it twice and then quit. I like palying a random thing like sealed deck. Much more skilled involved than some pimpley geek who downloaded a deck to make.

Plus I spent way too much money on it all with not much to show for it. Now I keep the cards around because I enjoy the artwork.

I enjoyed the video game from a while ago even if it was buggy and not very challenging. I wish I could get it to work on XP or win2k.

I actually got duels of the planeswalkers from kazaa the other night and got it working on XP. All you have to do is install the most recent patch and it works perfectly. If you want the file, let me know and I will put it up on FTP for you to snag. The patch is 1.3.2 I think and is a manalink patch (not 1.3). Just PM me if you want it and I will make you an FTP login tonight.

I have a ton of these cards.. everything up to the last expansion.
Sartori, am I missing any hidden costs in that magic workshop thing at all? That looks pretty damn nice.

But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

Don't know of any hidden costs. I still haven't registered it, but I'm sure I will be soon.

I prefer to play the actual card game rather than the online one. I have a standing Magic game on Wednesdays. Always fun to have a 6 player game. Lots of politics to contend with.

Stan,

I play a few games every night and sometimes play in tourneys. Message me (Jay on MSN), and I'll show you how to use it. It doesn't take long to master.

RL vs Online

Post by Sartori »

I prefer the real card game too, but playing online (for free) and making decks out of any cards you want is actually pretty fun. You also get a LOT more diversity in opponents than you do with your local metagame. I've seen many cards I didn't even know existed (mostly because I was out of the loop for 7 years or so), and some really great ideas to base my own decks off of.

I love playing irl, but I can't make any deck I want because I don't own all the cards. I hate proxying, but I will do it to see if a deck idea works. Then I'll try my hardest to acquire the cards I need. Since I don't have money to blow on cases and cases of cards I don't always get what I want/need. Not to mention, my local card shop closed down recently, and the nearest one is 40 min drive away thru some hellacious I-5 traffic.

Anyways, MWS is a fun diversion from the real thing. The only thing I really miss is the shit-talking with my friends while we're playing face-to-face (politics definitely are fun multiplayer too hehe)

And possibly due to the copyrights for the artwork.

I am always on MSN.

If you want pics try http://joeramone.sites.uol.com.br/index.htm

Put the folders in your pics folder. Then point MWS at pics folder (it's under preferences).

The easiest way to find people to duel is to go to the IRC channel. Go to Game menu, select connect to chat or whatever, and log on. I figured all of this out myself in like 5 minutes, it's not that hard :)

Damn didn't realize that there were so many damn expansions. Glad I got out of the game when I did. Must be a couple hundred meg worth of pics in just zip files. I'll do the work tomorrow unzipping and moving the folders.

What is that Flavor Text thing he has on his site? Or that database?
