Concert/Performance DVDs

This is a new concept to me. The VP in the office next to me told me I "got to hear YES' live from amsterdam symphonic DVD." I had my doubts, but apparantly I knew the words to like 6 songs (I did not know Yes sang those songs...).

Anyhoo, the DTS decoding was simply breathtaking in detail, and I simply could not believe the clear, crisp, preciseness of the sound track. Amazingly, it was also a very "warm" sound track. If you don't know what I mean, I'm sorry...audiophilia and shit

So, I was thinking about purchasing some of these DVD performances myself, to start a collection off. I figured it would be nice to have some recomendations to use for a starting point to buying some...anybody have some favorites to share???

Pink Floyd-Pulse was pretty good. It's all live footage from their tour from '93-'94ish era. They perform the entire Darkside of the Moon album though, which is a plus! The sound is excellent. If you mess with your DTS settings, it can make you feel like you're actually at the concert.

I'm also a huge fan of Rage Against the Machine's live performances and music video collection on their self-titled DVD.

What are the benefits of buying a DVD concert performance over a CD? Is it just that the concerts are not available on CD or you prefer to watch it too?

Never considered looking into or buying the music DVDs and was curious, thanks

Watching someone perform your favorite music is nice if you make the time. It's also nice to see and hear the audiance react to the performance. Also, many modern artists put their music videos at the end. It's just nice to have for your collection IMO.

Sarah McLachlan - Mirrorball (I've played that many many times. Not DTS but still amazing sound although the bass seems low for the first 5 or 6 songs)

Cranberries - Beneath the Skin Live in Paris v2.0 (First release wasn't DTS)

The Coors - Live at Royal Albert Hall

Sarah Brightman - One Night in Eden (Only 2.0 but with a good receiver sounds good. I also have her La Luna DVD but the DTS doesn't sound right to me)

The Cure - Greatest Hits (Mostly Videos but a few acoustic versions)

John Mayer - Any Given Tuesday

Guess it depends on what you like. If you like someones CD you'll more than likely enjoy the DVD. The Eagles DVD has great sound as well but I don't own that. I haven't really come across a bad concert DVD yet. Basically if it's 5.1 it will sound just as good as DTS in most cases.

Concert DVD's (99.999999999999999999999999999999999999%) of the time are encoded for surround sound. Where as CD's are encoded for 2 speaker stereo still. You can play a CD on a surround sound system, and it will sound different. But it is not the same as a true surround sound encoded musical track.

If you don't have a kick ass home theater system, then it won't be a huge difference for you...But if you have a nice setup the difference should be large.

Just a warning: Many of the concert DVDs have fake surround, meaning that it's encoded later and added artificially, so the experience is...less that satisfactory, to put it mildly.
