quick and basic networking question

Hola. I'm looking to be able to network my compaq and dell together.. mainly so I can get some old mp3 files off of said compaq to the dell so I can CD burn 'em... and a few other things

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what this entails. Anyone able to give me some advice? I'm running them off of the same cable modem, if that matters.. using a router. <shrugs, unknowingly>

Should just be able to create a network. Both computers hooked up to the router or hub should be able to see each other. Have to go in to the C: and set up properties so that you can see the file system on either computer. Then it is just a matter of moving the files.

$30 Hub or Switch from BestBuy

Connect Cable Modem & 2 PC's to the hub/switch. (If you're wanting both PC's to be able to connect to the Internet via the cable modem, check with your cable company.. Time Warner charges an extra $10 per IP)

Enable file sharing on both PC's. (Slightly trickier if WinXP)

If you want to be secure (nonXP), load NetBEUI and bind File/Print sharing to that and unbind it from TCP/IP. NetBEUI isn't routed to the internet so nobody coming in via TCP/IP will be able to access your shares if you only share via NetBEUI.

In any case, always password protect your shares. (nonXP)

I hate Winblows file sharing. For me, it's just easier to get an FTP server on the PC w/ the files, dump them into the root dir, and use Leech to grab them.

should be a tab on that window that opens up called "Sharing"

you need to enable File and Print sharing here.

Do not share your entire file system.

Once that has been done (on both machines), you can then go to My Computer.

On each one pick a folder that you want to share.

My Documents is fine for a default if you like, or you can create one and call it something like 'pub' (for public).

You can share any folders you like, but it is a very bad idea to share the entire C: drive or C:\windows etc.

To share a folder on the network, you just right click on the folder (in My Computer) you want to share and select Sharing. Select "Full" and you are done.

Now when you click Network Neighborhood on the other computer you should see the folder you just shared. you can then just move files around easily.

*shudder* XP sharing can be very sucky. You have to make sure that the folder your shit is in is OUTSIDE of the Program Files folder. That is all the help I can give you on that.

It's been a while since I've used my xp machine.

BUT...if you go to your network places.

(Any window when exploring your pc, look on the left side. Should be a list of locations including 'My network places')

Your pc will be listed there, open that. and your shared documents folder will be there. Throw the shit you want shared in there.

With xp you can't just share your entire computer. At least not to my knowledge. which is getting rusty being stuck on this fuckstick machine i'm using.

you people need to seriously scrap the notion of sharing the whole PC if you are not firewalled.

i know people with windows generally assume that if their router does NAT or even firewalling, it is secure.

that is so completely incorrect!

i hope you guys who are talking about sharing your whole machine are not on connections that are more or less static.

Just a basic overview here because I'm feeling lazy..

With WinXP you need to..

Start / Settings / Control Panel

Network Connections / Local Area Connection / Properties

Scroll down until you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select that. (Make sure you see File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks in the list - if not, install it)

Click Properties.
Click Advanced.
Click WINS.
Click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
Click Ok.
Click Ok.
Click Close.
Click Ok.

Close Local Area Connection window.

Back in Control Panel open User Accounts.
Click Create a new account.

It'll ask you for some user information. The information you enter here MUST match the login information of the other PC that you want to access this PC's files. So if I logged on my other PC as Kat2 pass KatPass then I need to create that user on this PC as well.

Enter a username.
Click next.
Decide on access type; your choice.
Click Create Account.
Click the new account you just created.
Click Create a password and do so.
Closer User Accounts window.
Close Control Panel.

On any open window that allows you to choose Folder Options, do so.
Click on the View tab.
Scroll down until you see "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and uncheck it if it's checked.
Click ok.

Find the drive or folder(s) that you want to be able to access with the other PC (using the account made above, which you'll be logging into the other PC with (and need to make sure that user account exists over on that other PC as well)). I'm going to use the EverQuest folder as an example.

Right click on the EverQuest folder/directory.
Click Sharing and Security.
Click the Sharing tab.
Click Share this folder
If you want the share to be hidden, put a $ in front of whatever name you want to call it.
Click Permissions.
Click Add.
Type the name of the account you created above. (eg: Kat2)
Click Check Names.
It should underline the name showing you that it found it.
Click Ok.
Click the name you just added. (eg: Kat2)

Choose the permissions below that you want that account to have. Choices are Full, Change and Read only. If you just want to copy files from this folder, just keep it at Read.

Click Everyone.
Click Remove.
Click Ok.
Click Ok.

You're done. $5.00 please.

if anything it's easier
xp does everything for you practically

It's easy if you use two NIC's in your PC and let the XP wizard set it up for you. If you only use 1 NIC in each PC and both connect to a hub/switch to access the Internet you'll get some message from the wizard that Microsoft doesn't recommend that type of setup and will disable it and throw up it's poor excuse for a firewall.

All the steps I mentioned above are required for "normal" file sharing that in ME, 98, 95 only took a right click, hit sharing, pick a password.

And no, mixing 98 & XP together isn't a problem. Just make sure as mentioned above that the logging on of the PC's are users that are setup on the other PC.

Make sure you read katria's post. The problem with XP is they tried to make it to simple. They included that nice little well hidden option called "use simple file sharing" and it makes it seems like your computer is built for children. Turn that off and you have full control over whats shared and whats not shared. It makes sharing files between xp,98,me etc much easier

As long as you are using the same File System (Fat 32, NTFS, Fat 16, etc) between the 2 computers you shouldn't run across too many problems. But if it is just win 98 and XP I don't think you'll run across many problems...although I haven't had any experience with XP yet becuz it seriously was made so that a 10 year old can have functionality of the features that he has no clue what they do. Oh well!
