Jews get uppity about Coca-Cola Nazi-bot

Post by kyoukan »

Coca-Cola promotes drink with 'swastika' robots

A Coca-Cola promotion in Hong Kong featuring a robot adorned with 'swastikas' has been condemned.

Rabbi Yakkov Kermaier, of Ohel Leah Synagogue, says it is probably an honest mistake, but he's called toy sets featuring the "Robocon" characters unacceptable.

One character, the robot-like "Robowaru," has two swastikas on its chest and can be bought in the UK for around £2.60 with any purchase of six bottles of Coke.

The figurines stand on small plastic pedestals with Coca-Cola logos on them.

"It's not simply a politically incorrect symbol," Rabbi Kermaier said. "It's an emblem that represents the wholesale slaughter of six million Jews."

Rabbi Kermaier acknowledged the Nazi swastika can easily be confused with Buddhist swastikas that are common in Asia. The two symbols are close to being reverse images of one another, with the arms pointing in opposite directions.

Coca-Cola says the figurines were made according to the original Robowaru design, but a spokeswoman declined any other immediate comment.

Animation International, which sells rights for Robocon and worked with Coca-Cola on the toys, says the symbols were designed by the creator and "did not have anything to do with any organisation or religion."

Yeah a toy robot sporting a common buddhist symbol in China was a real gross error in judgement.

I swear to god you've already wrecked this thread with how fucking moronic you are.

Its a buddhist symbol, and it has nothing to do with the nazi swastika. That is the entire point.

China is primarily buddhist. I would tell Cart to do the math if I thought he could count passed five.

Besides, maybe Hitler thought the jews were going to attack Germany one day.

I would imagine AT LEAST several dozen people were involved in the production of this toy. I don't understand how it could have gotten as far as manufacturing without someone saying "Uh, guys, don't you think having swastikas on our toy might be a little offensive?"

I worked with an engineering team at HP who were so sensitive they didn't want to use the terms "Master" and "Slave" when discussing controller cabling (despite the words being clearing marked onthe hardware). I also was told that the reason why we don't show hands performing actions in our illustrations was because it posed the question of what color the hand would be!

You so Funny, but as soon as you take the blinders off and think from a marketing stand point of what a blunder this is for Coke. You see Kooky you are so quick to jump on or over anything that you very rarely see the big picture. This will effect Coke sales and you know it and it will be pulled from the shelves. But it never fails you bite Hook Line and Sinker.

I don't think the Chinese learn much about european history. And since they are exposed to that particular symbol almost daily they probably don't even see it as anything other than what it really means. To the Chinese, WW2 history is mainly about how badly fucked over by the Japanese they were.

If the entire marketing thing was handled in China with little influence from the western counterparts I could see how it could easily slip by.

Good point. I knew that the symbol originally had a very positive meaning attributed to it. I just was oblivious to its use in contemporary eastern culture.

i dont remember all of this verbatim, but it was from a Hindu friend of mine (from India) in college. He was telling me that the term "Arayan" refers to his ethnicity, not one that Europeans are derived from. Hitler coopted some of the conceptual stuff and symbology in part of the quai-religious zealotry that his party used to spread their message. The swastika was one of them.

i'm sure Kyo is right, this was largely done w/ Chinese decision making. The Chinese though will have to learn the same lessons that we have had to learn working with Asians and others, and that is to succeed in international business you need to make sure you dont piss off your customers :p understanding their culture is a good first step =)

The Nazi swastika is angled 27.5 degrees off is's center, and the off shooting "fins" give it the indication of spinning counter-clockwise, like on the robot above. However, Nazi Germany did not invent that symbol, they stole it and bastardized it. However, the more traditional "hebrew" swastika is used as a representative of the seal of the heart of Buddha, as seen below:
http://freejesus.net/home/viewtopic.php?p=5935
The differance is the angle and rotation, however both are used in Buddhism.

Fiction: Swastikas are evil
Fact: The swastika is an older symbol for good, order and god than the cross. In fact, by buddhist culture, it represents the footprints of Buddha, to help guide your way to elightenment.
Fiction: Robo swastika is wearing Nazi swaskitas
Fact: No it isn't.

The Harappan Civilization of India (2500-1500 BC), of which little is known, at it's collapse saw an invasion of the Arayans, a fairer skinned people to the north, who took over most of India of the course of the next 500 years. The Arayans tried to distance themselves from the Dravidians (darker skinned descendents from the Harappan) so they insituted the start of India's caste system, and saw the start of hinduism (the writing of the Vedas for instance). Despite that strong caste system, it's still a large part of where Indians draw ancestry from, and your friend was probably accurate in what he said.

This is one of those posts where everyone is right. Yeah it was silly of Coke to do this, but yeah it's silly of people to get upset when it isn't the symbol they thought it was. Political correctness is the DEVIL.
Also, as was said, OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of Indian history got bastardized by the west. The 'Aryan' race glorified by Hitler and the modern skinheads comes from skewed western versions of the mythical city of Aryavarta, said to be populated by a 'superrace' of light skinned, blonde haired mystics.

Listen you self-righteous bastard; back away from your fucking crusade. I have yet to see you bring anything to these boards worth reading aside from your own ill-informed idealistic view of 'how things should be'. The real beauty of the blinders you go through life with is how they prevent you from presenting anything close to a relevant thought when issues of controversy come up.

Your arrogance, bolstered by the perception that you're some kind of model citizen has blinded you to the fact that you're a hypocrite both religiously and ethically. You have some nerve to tell me that I think MY shit doesn't stink. I know very well that my shit stinks, and I don't pretend otherwise. You statements on the other hand come from a veritable firehose of diarrhea. Your thoughts are closed-minded, one-sided and unobjective.

Hopefully some day you'll learn to come to an unbiased understanding of issues before attempting to make yourself understood, but the posters on this message board, as well as myself who are all tired of your incessant hyperbole and preaching are not going to hold our collective breaths.

Yes ma'am.

I googled it, clearly the source of the link has to be considered when making a determination based on the information provided:
http://www.paganlibrary.com/reference/swastika.php
The swastika or more properly the tetraskelion, gramadion or croixpatt*e, has been found in pre Columbia America, in Central Asia, China, Japan, through out Europe etc. It's found among people as varied as the Etruscans, Hindus, Celts, Aztecs, Mayans, American Indians, Teutonic and Nordic peoples etc.

The swastika has represented many things to many people who never heard of Christ! It has represented the spinning wheel of life, time, progress, the four elements, seasons, health, wealth, prosperity and/or blessing in many myths & cultures around the world.

The Swastika refers only to the rt. hand spinning cross such as used in Nazi Germany, the more correct & older version is called the Swavastika and spins the opposite direction. Hitler subverted the older symbol for his own perverse reasons.

The left hand Swavastika refer to the male & the right hand Swastika refers female. In Hinduism the swastika has represented two forms of Brahma. Clockwise it represents Pravritti or the evolution of the universe flowing outward & counter clockwise it represented Nirvritti the involution of the universe.

In India it represented Gamesa & Kali. In Ancient Persia the left hand swastika was used to represent sacred fire to their priests. Its left arm up representing receptivity and its right arm down representing blessing.

The Swavastika has represented Thor's hammer spinning in Norse mythology and the cycle of time in Hindu and American Indian myth & legend. In many cultures it was a symbol of the power of the sun, a symbol of good fortune. It has also been a symbol of Dyaus, Zeus, Jupiter as well as Thor. In China its call Li-wen meaning thunder-scroll. In some cultures the right spinning Swastika has been used to denote the vernal sun and the left autumnal the sun.

As the fyfot it has been used as a Christian symbol of the cross and a decoration at the bottom of church windows for centuries.

Although some scholars think the Swastika originated in Assyria or India there is no single common origin for the Swastika because it can easily be discovered by anyone studying simple designs made in squares! The only thing known for sure about the swastika is that the symbol predates both Hitler & Christ.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

After over an hour on the phone with Coca-Cola trying to find out who is corporately responsible for approving this campaign what I found was astonishing. Everyone from the VP of Marketing Canada (Elaine Maxwell) to the VP of Marketing USA (Forgot the name) ducked my question(s) and invariably put me into an electronic voice mail hell. "I am not qualified to answer that question but I will connect you with someone who is" I imagine laughter in the background.

Would be interesting to know if the campaign had any Western influence with regards to Creative, Execution, and Approvals. Is advertising regional, with regional approvals only or is the Higher Power (Atlanta) consulted on issues?

If someone would like to find this info, I drew a blank with google and with calling both Canada and USA Coke head offices.

I work with Marketing executives and Advertising People all day shithead and many of the "Canadian Companies" that I deal with get their creative approved down south before it ever see's the light of day. Companies like Goodyear, Ford, General Motors etc.

So to connect the dots you dimwitted slut we will begin with the above statement. Assuming that to be true, I was trying to determine if China had carte blanche with their advertising or if they were obligated to have the marketing approved by the USA prior to being exposed to the general public.

Get it dumbass.

Stand back people, Atokal's weighing in and flexing his intellectual muscle. Something might burst! Now before you go sending me a hurt PM, don't bother. It's people like you that make me wonder how we as a people have gotten this far, and then I remember that stupid people seem to procreate the most. Not many Where's Waldo reviews going on there last I looked.

Ferris Bueller's day off is quite possibly my favorite movie from my youth. It would not be ignoble to aspire to be exactly like Ferris.

You didn't touch a thing you fool. Your bullshit finally pegged the meter, and I posted my honest opinion of you.

PS Danke Shoen is <3

PPS More posts about your vagina please, kthx!

If someone would like to find this info, I drew a blank with google and with calling both Canada and USA Coke head offices.
what the fuck? it was in china you dumb shithead. did your mother smoke a lot when she was pregnant with you?
I can imagine you dragging your overused cunt across the floor leaving a slime trail as you dream about finding another of my posts to stalk. What part of my post didnt you understand??

I'd love nothing more than to put a handful of people I consider truly, bonafied, Grade A government approved stupid on STFU, but then absoltely zero threads would make sense except for maybe those in the book forum. Not many Where's Waldo reviews going on there last I looked.

"Get it dumbass", you sure got it!
The fact that you have the stones to talk about Marketing or business at the tender age of 25 is both mystifying and amusing. Wait you didnt say a thing about the topic at hand you merely jumped on your keyboard with an air of imagined superiority and mashed the submit button. If you and Kyoustalker cannot fathom the relevance of whether or not Coca Cola's HQ has input with regards to their International Image I really should not be surprised. If this robot was approved or had to be submitted to Cokes Marketing team in the USA I would say they should have known better. Regardless of the Buddist / religious connotations of the symbol or the slight variations it is still percieved as a symbol of hatred and genocide.

That is the reasoning for my investigation. It is easy for Kyouidiot to post a little article regarding this, but her lack of desire in finding out who had responsibility for letting this out to the consumer is appalling as are your junior remarks. It is obvious that Kyoukan is the brain trust for all you idiots who cannot or will not think for yourselves. When you are finished with school or have had a job other than College Pro Painters, offer an opinion till then stfu dickhead.

Those of us who aren't morons (so not you) already know who was responsible for it: Coca-Cola's marketing team in China. Coca Cola China is responsible for over a billion customers. I doubt that they have to run every marketing gimmick passed the "HQ" in the USA.

The Chinese would have to problem with the symbols on the robot. The symbol doesn't connote anything evil in Asian culture. Actually it doesn't connote anything evil in any culture as it only bears a resemblance to the nazi swastika. The robot was a purely chinese marketing gimmick and it was only when brits started bringing them back from Hong Kong did anyone even notice.

Though I'll admit that I'm laughing my ass off at the thought of you calling Coca Cola and annoying people better than you, that are trying to do their jobs as you "get to the bottom of all this" for the good of the world. And my fun is doubled by the fact that you bring me up 3 times in yet another thread at the same time you call me a stalker.

You Doubt or you Know you ignorant ass!

OMG KYOUKAN HAS A DEGREE IN MARKETING AND KNOWS ALL ABOUT COCA COLA'S ADVERTISING REGULATIONS WORLD WIDE!!!!11!1

Is there anything else you would like to guess at and spout off as fact you moron?

Kinda like the last time we went toe to toe and you lost because of your stupidity. I am sure this will get old soon bitch.

Following is an example of your Incredible talent for posting Bullshit and calling it fact.
kyoukan wrote:Yeah it's a shame really. Iran was well on their way to moderating themselves and getting rid of their fundamentalist leaders until Bush decided to call them all evil. Now they have to defend themselves with nuclear weapons because we all know what heppens to countries Bush doesn't like.

FYI, Iran isn't involved in anynon-proliferation pact. So saying they are in violation of it is patently stupid.
There are plenty of other examples of your stupidity, however many here are blinded by your wit. Which btw is getting very very lame of late.

WTF are YOU so indignant about? Its pretty obvious that it was a slip-up. Even the Rabbi in the article called it "probably an honest mistake." Yeah, the Chinese creators should have been a little more culturally aware of the symbol's meaning in WESTERN culture (In case you're getting lost, that means NOT THEIR CULTURE), but I'd bet that the US has been guilty of similar ignorance in their manufacture of products sold overseas.

And trying to belittle Dregor's comments just because he's younger than you are is weak. But then, coming from someone who thinks combining kyoukan's name with other words is clever, I can see how you would use the "I'M OLDER THEN U SO I AM SMARTER !1!!1!" logic.

You really are stupid. Read the thread. I was merely interested in who was responsible for making this "mistake". It would have been irresponsible for Coca-Cola HQ to let this into the market. Many companies have regulations regarding marketing and who has the right to approve creative, whether it is a written advertisement or a gadget attached to a promotion. Your mewlings and constant defending of Kyoukan is fucking lame. Get your own life, opinions, whatever but for the sake of intelligent people everywhere stfu till then.

I'm glad you find my stones mystifying. On to the subject. I don't need any kind of a degree for common sense. I'm aware of my surroundings, I listen to the state of the world. I know that restrictions for ANYTHING in China is harsh, and do not doubt that Coca-Cola China has autonomity when it comes to marketing. If complaints are filed and reach large enough proportions to be noticed, then yes, maybe the US will intervene.

"Regardless of the Buddist / religious connotations of the symbol or the slight variations it is still percieved as a symbol of hatred and genocide."

This quote is simply ludicrous. Regardless of the religious connotations? Ignoring the fact that these AREN'T EVEN SWASTIKAS, merely resemble them, there's the fact that it is a religious symbol. Not a nazi symbol. Show a Chinese Buddhist that symbol and what do you think their reaction will be? Not seig heil! There's nothing wrong with the robot. It's not promoting the supremacy of the white race (IN CHINA!), it's not invading Poland, and it's not killing Jewish people. The American flag would probably be more "appaling" than a Buddhist symbol.

Don't try and place yourself as better than me because of age. I've met plenty of people older than me who have the intellectual power of someone half their age, at best. You're not the best. I hope your investigation pans out, be sure to keep us all appraised. Might I suggest some texts to help you out in your search? Try out 'The Hardy Boys and the House on the Cliff', or maybe 'Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned for Danger'. I'm sure they'll not only provide you with some excellent sleuthing techniques, but also a challenging and fun read!

This reminds me of another marketing mix up. It was for an American pet food, I can't remember the name but something like Puppy Love, and when they packaged it for Mexico the translation came out 'Dog Sex'. Anyone else remember this, I am sure I have it wrong in some way, I barely remember it.

I re-read the thread and all I see is some sad little man screaming "OUTRAGE! WHO IS RESPONSIBLE!?"

You obviously are so "interested" to call a bunch of Coke headquarters in your free time and then get pissy when they wouldn't talk to your ass. Gee you must have a dull life.
