Akira Kurosawa's Dreams

Post by kyoukan »

IMDB Link

This is probably my favorite movie of all time. Yume (or Akira Kurosawa's Dreams) is a collection of just that. The dreams of a man, brought to life in film by Akira Kurosawa, Japan's greatest and certainly my favorite film maker of all time. It is a collection of short films that are given cohesion by a main character who experiences all of these different and vivid things that really do a fantastic job of showing the various cultural influences, thoughts and fears of pre and post-WW2 Japan.

I cannot stress highly enough how important this film is to me and how much I recommend you download and watch it. I'm not even sure if you'll like it, but you should watch it nontheless just to see a different kind of film.

Although if you are an absolute devout hollywood nut that only watches the latest bruce willis movie or whatever you won't like it. It is very much an "art-house" kind of movie, although I loathe to use that particular term.

It is 2 hours long, comes in at 788 MB and is encoded in DiVX.

Akira's movies are cool. I also loathe using this term to describe the works...but...they are 'groundbreaking' films.

I saw Dreams for the first time about two weeks ago. I enjoyed it. Kurosawa has made some of my favorite movies ever. Best director do date I think.

PS. If you hadnt noticed, my avatar pic is of Toshiro Mifune from Kurosawa's "Throne of Blood". Mifune is one of the greatest actors ever and has played many roles for Kurosawa films.

Aye - Toshiro Mifune is a great actor - the Samurai series was a must buy on DVD.

Where do you think the name Toshira came from? Feminized version of Toshiro Mifune.

Dreams is spectacular. The cinemetography alone is so breathtaking that it demands multiple viewings. Used to have it on Laserdisc...haven't seen it out on DVD yet, so it's been a few years since I watched it. The Woman of the Snow or whatever is fantastic.

On a side note, if you like Japanese/Folklore, I'd suggest picking up Kwaidan at some point as well. Fascinating ghost stories that incidentally appear as cover art for Bill Frisell's band "Naked City" (in the liner notes).
