Griefing

Post by pyrella »

We all know it sucks, any thoughts or ideas on alternative ways it could be handled?

Last night hanging out in TR sanctuary I saw OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of 'reverse' griefing going on. People jumping in front of cars, or flying a reaver right above a Galaxy just as it was about to take off.

Also lots of 'idiot reverse' griefing - 4 people blasting an enemy max froma decent range, and some rambo running up in the middle of the fight, getting himself killed, and 4 people griefed.

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

Yea it's a tricky one, and in some ways I think it's just a shitty excuse to try not to mod/GM it properly.

Things I thought of that could be improved;

- Engineers getting grief from mine explosions hitting friendly troops (say two people fighting near a mine and the enemy runs over the mine). Cancel that totally. Same for spitfire turrets causing grief when friendlys run through fire.

- No grief for hitting someone in a stealth suit!

- AMS is another big problem, I constantly hit them when people park them in bases. Taking grief off an AMS is a risky thing to do though. Not sure how to tackle this. Possibly just reduce damage caused in friendly vehicle collisions?

- 1/2 maybe even 1/4 grief from splash damage (and plasma). Especially relevant for grenades.

- /ForgiveTK command similar to CS. Reduce grief from non-lethal hits. Make kill grief OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS higher.

- Make grief reduction rate while online higher so that people who play more aren't penalised by the same standard grief decay rate.

- Dump the whole thing and just make damaging/hurting others hurt you.

I had one the other night. I was escorting an AMS to a battle site when we ran into an enemy AMS. I started tearing into it with my lightning. Battle goes on and my lightning gets disabled by the troops from the AMS.
We get the people dead and are just polishing off the AMS. I fire a rocket from mypunisher that blows up the AMS as a guy walks up to it. Grats me 80 grief.

Yeah, I don't think you should get grief for people's own stupidity. There needs to be some way around it. I don't have my beta CD's yet so I don't know exactly how it works, but we shall see...

I agree with everything Salis said, and would add:
  • No grief for shooting your own equipment - If you're firing on an enemy who runs in front of one of your terminals, spawn tubes, turrets, unmanned vehicles, you currently take grief.
  • No grief for splash damage caused by mines, or vehicles exploding - If you are shooting an enemy tank that's coming into your base, and happen to destroy it while a teammate is standing near it, you will take grief for hurting your teammate.
  • They need to make friendly infiltrators more visible to members of their empire - Bottom line is, if I'm moving fast in a vehicle, or if I see a blur off to the side of me, especially if he just came round a corner and is standing in front of me, I might not see the green name hovering above him.
I am very much hoping that the rate of descent on grief they implemented last night was just a stopgap before they implement a real solution to the grief system.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

I was crying last night, I was laughing so hard.

I've got a SS of it at home that I'll post later, but in summation:

[tell] Marlboro: halo14, do you need a ride in the galaxy? We've got one spot left.
/tell Marlboro: no man, it's cool, I have one coming. Thanks though.
