Frank Herbert's Dune & Frank Herbert's Children of Dune

Post by Pahreyia »

I just finished both of these "epics." I got Dune on DVD and I had TIVO'd Children of Dune from when it aired last month. Going through the whole 10 hour series in, pretty much, a straight shot.

On the whole, the books are well represented, but the small details that meant the most to the books, are lost. For anyone who read the books and wanted to see a very well cinematized representation, I highly recommend these movies. However, I do caution anyone who has not read Dune before. There is so much to these, that you will start out lost and probably never get a full grasp on what's happening. The inner dialogue of the novels is key to understanding the motivations, plots, changes and nuances of the story.

However, the cinematography was well done for the Sci-Fi channels' budget constraints, the music, coreographed by Graeme Revell for Dune and Bryan Taylor for Children of Dune was excellent.

Given the overwhelming Sci-Fi and Fantasy following of the members of this board, I thought it fitting to make a recommendation of Dune for those who appreciated the novels.

Scifi Channel did a great job. You pretty much have to read the books to fully understand what's going on in these movies; since so much is unspoken and implied.

I thought the Lynch version of Baron Harkonnen was better than the SciFi Channel version, but other than that, the SciFi version was much better.

Only one minor complaint, where people are using shield generators as bombs.

I really tried to get into this series, but it just didn't seem 'epic' enough. Maybe I didn't watch enough of it. I was a big fan of the first Dune, and a long time fan of the books. I felt they portrayed the vastness of everything (space, the deserts, the worms) and Paul was 100x better.

What's the Children of Dune series like? Might give that a try.

Kurz, good call on the shield generators. That was a bit off, but it wasn't too bad a stretch for the series as a whole.

Children of Dune was so much better than the original miniseries movie. In the original movie they moved so quickly through certain parts and in others they took forever on the minor details. Children of Dune works itself at a really nice pace. It incorporates 2 books into a film length that originally barely contained the first novel. However the major parts of the novels are covered.

Some of the small complaints.. Beautiful people. Nearly everyone in the film is very attractive. Stock footage. Not much, but enough to notice. And again, no attention to the inner monologues, except while Alia is going through the abominations.

On the plus side, the acting is very very well done. Most, if not all of the main characters are played by people with stage and screen experience, and there are many awards represented. The music was second to none. Bryan Tylor does such a beautiful job composing this movie.

Release Date May 20

Children of Dune is coming to DVD May 20. I can't recommend this enough for Sci-Fi fans. The last hour is nearly the greatest hour of Sci Fi I've seen.
