Not sure where I stand on this. On the one hand you have protesters alledgedly throwing projectiles at the police, on the other you have police being "heavy handed".

Although I disagree with how the demonstration was done, I also strongly disagree with how it was handled. There are way better ways to disperse a crowd than using metal bullets covered by rubber (like I read in a different thread) and wooden bullets. This sounds like somthing taken straight out of the Israeli text book.

On the other side, do the police the right to use (what appears to be) excessive force on those who are 'inpeding commerce'?masteen wrote:I have no sympathy for those people. Staging a protest at a port is clearly meant to disrupt business, goad the police, and generally create exactly this kind of mess.
Right to free assembly does not give you the right to impede commerce.
The blame cannot be placed fully on either group.
I don't doubt the protesters got beligerent and it's obvious that some member of the police force did not excercise very good judgement.
After all, protesters are only really after publicity...
The police could have backed off, and let the protest go on and there would have been very little publicity at all.
There was a huge protest in Toronto a while back whose aim was to 'Shut Down Bay St' (our main financial district). They bussed in professional protesters and thousands of people from all across Canada. There was a massive police pressence but they gave the protesters a wide berth and remained a fair distance back. From what I recall, there were only a few arrests. It didn't even make front page news up here. An utter failure for what was one of the largest protest rallys ever in Toronto.
